UnCommons Moneyball gem

857

Someone made the point to me over the weekend, 30 goals, and counting, from midfield, rivals 53 from Henrik Larsson as a central striker.  It is an unnecessary burden to compare Kris Commons to Celtic’s greatest player in four decades, even Henrik couldn’t compare to the memory of Henrik, but the history books will show for decades to come, Kris Commons is a rare gem, a Celtic player for the ages.

He’s the definition of a Moneyball player, he’s a great multiple Player of the Year and he’s ours.

Enjoy watching him.

I see a certain former Rangers Director is in court again to day to try and arrest funds in support of his alleged claim for compensation re breach of contract.

Now this should be interesting as it is very similar to the Martin Bain strategy of a couple of years ago, where the justification for arresting the money will be the words of someone at Rangers themselves.

He will use Mr Wallace’s 120 day report as proof positive that Rangers are as skint as skint could be and that he has genuine fears that his claim could be defeated by their own impecuniosity and he will specifically point out that substantial sums of money have been taken out of the company by executives who are no longer there and that these same executives should have seen to it that he was paid his just reward.

In the event of his motion being successful, then this puts a further nail in the cashflow coffin over at Ibrox.

However, of even greater interest is what any restriction on the cashflow will signal to the SFA who have licensing duties to perform including the obligation to look into the finances of any club to the extent that they need to be satisfied that the club has the resources to meet their financial commitments all the way through to the end of the following season.

What’s interesting is that this is the second time Ahmad has tried to arrest funds. Last time the judge refused him on the basis that the company’s income was cyclical and while it might be short of funds at a particular date there was a reasonable expectation that over the year they’d be OK.

I can’t see how that attitude can be maintained given developments.

Maybe they’ll make him an offer to avoid the issue being aired.

Think Kris’s European contribution has been better, also Mr Commons is a player that improves through experience, if we are going to do anything of substance in Europe next season Kris is going to be key.

TBB was on twitter yesterday saying that there was loads of bank holiday reading in the latest issue of the magazine.

We are obviously keen to hear everyone’s views on the articles and features that we produce and also suggestions for items going forward.

I met a CQN’er yesterday who mainly lurks ( hello Jim ) who handed me a portfolio of press pictures that had sat in his loft for almost 50 years.

I am looking into how some of these can be reversioned and cleaned up for a future feature.

  17. It’s fair to say that Gary Hooper hasn’t exactly set the EPL alight. 8 goals in 23 starts and 10 sub appearances isn’t wonderful – although he is of course in a side heading for relegation.

In footballing terms a fit and hungry Gary Hooper would again score goals at Celtic. But how would he react to returning, presumably on a lower wage than this season and with press jibes about EPL flop in his ears? Would he respond positively and be motivated to prove them wrong? That’s bog the question for me.

my view on Gary Hooper from last season was that that when he was interested or in the mood or perhaps an England scout was in the stands then he was outstanding. Unfortunately I reckon for a big part of last season Gary Hooper couldnt be bothered or wasnt interested and it showed in his attitude and work rate especially second half of the season where his goals dried up until the cup final against hibs where he was back in the shop window and he decided to try again. For me in the few months Griffiths has been here his attitude, work rate and all round game would give him the nod over Gary Hooper every time.

Hooper on higher wages than Benteke of Aston Villa. We have zero chance with Hooper I’d have thought. His goal scoring record is reasonable in EPL. Better than many on triple wages triple fees. I’m sure he will either stay at Norwich or be picked up by a Villa, or Palace.

  29. Hooper found his level at Celtic IMO. He never looked capable for EPL. Similar with Commons, Stokes and Griffiths… Difference being that the 3 we have on our books KNOW it…

Hooper allowed his heid to get filled with Keech….

I tend to agree. Hooper was turned by the media into believing this bigger league nonsense. You will not make the England team at a smaller club. Hooper should have stayed at Celtic and banged in the CL goals. If it didn;t work out for him this season he could have left in the summer with another medal and 20+ goals and the fans would have accepted it better having signed a new deal last summer to ensure a decent fee. Hooper jumped at the first club that came for him. You don;t walk out on a club like Celtic for a small club like Norwich. Crazy stuff. I suspect his wages will be reduced by a percentage IF they go down. Most of these Yo-Yo clubs insert a clause like that. I would take him back IF the terms were suitable and if he had the hunger he had when he first signed. I personally think Celtic need a striker with guile to help the penalty box strikers we have at the moment. Stokes, Hooper and Griffiths would be too similar for me.

It’s all if’s and buts. The crazy transfer rumour season is underway though.

I always found Jock Steins comments on Charlie Nicks new training regime at Arsenal quite interesting. Charlie had gone for about 6 months and was visibly bulking up. Jock asked him why and Charlie said Arsenal had him at the weights. Jock said Charlie’s game was about the first 5 yards and that this bulking up would ruin him.

I find it strange that nowadays bulk or muscular bulk is seen to equal power and nowadays that would mean being even quicker over 5 yards. However maybe what Jock meant was that Charlie’s power to weight ratio had been disturbed and actually his natural power over 5 yards was sacrificed for more pace over a longer distance?

This got me thinking about Kris Commons. What kind if player would Kris be if he increased his power to weight ratio. I have never seen Kris with his shirt off so couldn’t comment on his body fat percentage. However, even accounting for the barreling effect of the hoops Kris looks over weight. If he is over weight it could take him months to find his mojo again if he decides to lose some of the fat. (If it is fat). It would take time and practice to get used to the new lighter chassis. Great player and one of the best I have seen at Parkhead but you have to wonder how good he would be with an extra half yard to go buy the man he has just beaten.

Robert Prosineki was the best unfit player I have ever seen. Smokes 40 a day and could have had 10 of them standing in the centre circle pinging balls to his team mates. Zagreb I think at the time I saw him.

Hooper if we can get him for 2.5 m ish yes please if not we should be able to get better elsewhere. As long as the guys we go for have a proven goal scoring record see Pukki!
