UnCommons Moneyball gem

857

Someone made the point to me over the weekend, 30 goals, and counting, from midfield, rivals 53 from Henrik Larsson as a central striker.  It is an unnecessary burden to compare Kris Commons to Celtic’s greatest player in four decades, even Henrik couldn’t compare to the memory of Henrik, but the history books will show for decades to come, Kris Commons is a rare gem, a Celtic player for the ages.

He’s the definition of a Moneyball player, he’s a great multiple Player of the Year and he’s ours.

Enjoy watching him.

  2. I see Don Rogers mentioned earlier in connection with Palace.

    Would that be the same Rogers who waltzed around the Arsenal defence at Wembley scoring the unlikely winning goals for Swindon Town?

    Not sure if you can get in touch with BRT&H (he mentioned your name in relation to a golf enquiry) but I’d be obliged if you could pass on my thanks to him for taking the trouble to reply. I did respond but I’m not sure if he’s seen it. I’ll repost my thanks next time I spot him on the blog.

    I have a nice bet at 16/1 ew Benfica outright for the EL (backed them, 14/1 shakhtar and 10/1 Napoli all at the last 32, the competition has been good to me over the years).

    THE EXILED TIM

    I saw this in The Guardian and remembered that TBO makes a fine Keema.

    Rather partial to it myself-though I admit that was not always the case-I’ve never known liver to be used in it.

    I’ll give it a go when I’m back down the road.

    ~~~~~~~~~~++~~~~~~~~~~
    Goat keema
    Keema is a versatile dish that can be eaten as a starter, main or snack. In India, it’s often sold as a street dish, and cooked on tawa (a large iron griddle). Goat is always used for keema in India, but lamb or mutton work well as substitutes. This recipe was inspired by the meal we cooked at my brother’s wedding. We cooked a whole goat, roasting the legs on a spit, and mincing the body meat and offal to make a keema. I’d say the offal is vital here, because it enhances the dish: at my restaurant Gymkhana, we use brain, because it is creamy and has a subtle flavour, but liver, while punchier, is easier to get hold of and a more than suitable replacement. Serves two.
    15ml vegetable oil
    1 onion, peeled and finely chopped
    1 bay leaf
    160g kid shoulder mince
    10g chopped fresh ginger
    3 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped
    1 green chilli, finely chopped
    5g turmeric powder
    5g red chilli powder
    Salt
    1 tomato, peeled and chopped
    50g fresh methi leaves (fenugreek), stalks removed
    50g kid liver (optional)
    5g garam masala powder
    20g fresh coriander leaves, chopped
    Heat the oil in a heavy bottomed pan and add in the onions and bay leaf. Fry until light golden in colour, add the mince and cook, stirring, until it’s lightly browned. Throw in the ginger, garlic and green chilli and, after two minutes, add the powdered spices and some salt, and cook for another few minutes. Stir in the tomato and reduce the heat.
    Finely chop the methi and add to the mince along with 125ml water. Dice the livers, then add to the keema, cover, and cook at a low simmer for seven or eight minutes.
    Stir in the garam masala, cook for a minute, then add the coriander and serve with paratha or pao bread.
  19. Disappointing result for Liverpool. I am hoping they win the league this year but that result doesn’t help. Was surprised that Rodgers left 3 up front at 3-0. all 3 front men were completely cream crackered – it was so obvious, yet he delayed bringing one of them off. Palace deserved their draw for there never say die attitude. Not really sure that the result makes that much difference in the title race though. I think Liverpool were depending on MC losing one of their last two games and that is still the case.
    We Stand on the Shoulders of Greats
    We all have people who are our heroes, our role models.
    They are usually great players, or men who have made contributions to our history.
    We also have fathers, grandfathers, brothers, uncles or friends who originally introduced us to Celtic, took us to games, lifting us over, and instilling in us the love of the club.
    Usually we look to great players of the past, or great managers to create our Celtic legends.
    But there are extraordinary Celtic men in every walk of life.
    I was with one yesterday, helping him celebrate his 91st birthday.
    GEORGE DOCK
    He was born in Ferguslie, not Paisley he says, the youngest of a family of five with three older brothers and a sister. He attended St Mary’s school and he often speaks in great admiration of the encouragement he received from his headmaster who imbued in him his love for football and particularly Celtic.
    ——————————————————————————————————————
    wonderful post, and my admiration for another generation of immigrants who took another boat to america , and followed the irish ashore.
    my granda wuddy higgins from the port had a brother paddy.
    as a young kid in the early 70s Paddys visit to highholm street was the coming of the prodigal son, a hero, a visionary, and a brothers love for his brother.
    he brought hershey bars and other really rubbish sweets, but in such great quantities that wuddy and mary annes gran weans , a hunner of them got some.
    five years later, we went to school with real tube socks, how cool were we.
    Paddy was an enigma, he could come over, and the celtic view would be shown and the kearny csc would be in there with the grand dinner , hosting jock, sean, the lions, the cubs,
    and the names of those 19 , published and known,
    they came from ferguslie, clydebank , dumbarton, greenock, the port, glasgow.
    in my twentys i became really close to pat, a driver, on his more and more frequent trips to scotland. he went to those places met relatives of the 19, went everywhere to meet everyone, knew everyone.
    take me here, i am going to see jack mcginn.
    can we go there , i need to deliver a message for mccann from montreal to his dad in stirling.
    i need to go see hugh adam, his brother in the scottish kearny club asked me to drop off a something.
    and long time before anyone would know it, i am off to lurgan to see lennon (the dad not the bhoy).
    Paddy gave me a lot of advice. Wanted me to go to america, saw something in me , and told me i could be the best higgins ever, he could make it so. . i didnt ever go .
    but he is in my three of great men , who made me who i am , english granda james, paddy, and dunky c of the pie ella fame.
    We went to a rangers game together at celtic park , 1994’s , the mars bar game, he told me not to despair, everything was going to change, his pal from the golf tours, because he has a travel agent, his pal fergus, was the man to change it all.
    i stood for my shares in the big que. up and around the stairs like a disney ride, round the corner and another que. the guy behind me had a kearney csc, baseball jacket on, a work of art, i peventually said to him , oh the kearny club, i know someone there, ……….
    its ok sun, walking up the stairs, i knew you were a higgins, your all clones. lol.
    next time we were together was that night in saint johnstone. me , jimbo , wee john and old pat. a glorious drive up, a brilliant memorable talk about bigotroy and rising above it, and being good, its not only being a catholic, its being a celt, and its much much more than supporting a football team.
    we are more than that.
    he told me.
    i believed him.
    we watched jackson and larsson score, 2-0.
    he told me, celtic are going to win the league. no ten for them.
    We had only a couple of games together after this, but he did take great pride in talking about t
