UnCommons Moneyball gem

857

Someone made the point to me over the weekend, 30 goals, and counting, from midfield, rivals 53 from Henrik Larsson as a central striker.  It is an unnecessary burden to compare Kris Commons to Celtic’s greatest player in four decades, even Henrik couldn’t compare to the memory of Henrik, but the history books will show for decades to come, Kris Commons is a rare gem, a Celtic player for the ages.

He’s the definition of a Moneyball player, he’s a great multiple Player of the Year and he’s ours.

Enjoy watching him.

  1. On the topic of the Deid Club. My neebor of many seasons in the North Stand had a certain birthday recently. His brother is a very well known media person and is well connected with Celtic. As such he was able to get my neebor a special day in the Directors’ box at a recent game, the full bhoona, before, during and after the game. Much to my mate’s dismay just about every director who opened his mouth, including Peter Lawwell, is of the opinion that they want the Deid Club playing in the SPFL. When my mate asked why he was told ‘finance’.

I don’t generally agree with the Lawwell-bashing that goes on on here at times, but frankly I’m amazed that these views are so entrenched among the directors. Maybe this is where the views expressed by ex-players are coming from.

I’m surprised that anyone would be surprised at such a revelation.

And I’d suggest that the support’s realisation of the Board’s attitude is as much to do with the fall in attendances as any other factor.

There’s no vision and no leadership. And the ‘don’t interrupt your enemy’ line is just barefaced dishonesty.

  4. livibhoy- He’s had his time at Celtic, a good servant but his heart wasn’t in it during the last 6 months.

Besides as you say, too similar to Stokes and Griffiths, personally I would like to see a big Sutty type striker to bang in all those crosses we send in to the box, everybody in the team is feart to put their head where defends put their boots. But there is not many of them around, I grant you, well other than Scotland’s most lethal finisher, ever- Kris Boyd. :-))

Unfortunately for us Campbell Ogilvie will be heading up the Administrators team.

  8. I don’t know the exact details of Celtic’s finances but surely uninterrupted access to Champion ‘a League every year in perpetuity carries greater financial benefit than having the Huns back in the SPFL?

Also in terms of longer term strategic planning any escape from Scottish football must be easier as a vibrant successful Club with European credentials on our own than being part of a double act where the other partner is constantly embroiled in financial and fair play mayhem..

So your “neebor” was at a game in the Celtic directors box, and we are expected to believe that, in the course of the day, “every director who opened his mouth, including Peter Lawwell” expressed their desire for “the deid club” to be back in the SPL.

So they all said that did they? On that particular day? In front of your mate? Like only on that day and not any other day, or do they say it every day?

Nice try, but I just don’t buy it.

Interesting thread there about KC’s body shape.

Some of the best players have been, shall we say, more rounded characters and have made up for a perceived lack of pace with speed of thought and an ability to be in the right place.

Kenny Dalglish had this quality, BBJ too but the best for me was Gerd Muller.

I think there is a growing desperation among some Celtic fans to get Sevco up to give them some record breaking humpings.

I doubt the directors would discuss it in the directors box while we were skelping Aberdeen.

The CL is where we make our money. As long as we continue to reach the group stages then it helps the club run in it’s current form. If we don;t make the group stages we may have to sell a few assets and play a few more kids. That in itself is not a disaster either.

I just hope the work is done early to get the players in we need to reach the group stages next season. We don;t need a lot of quantity I think we need 3 quality players and probably a goalkeeper if Forster heads back south.

I think Commons would lose a lot of his strength if he lost a bit of weight. He shrugged off that Aberdeen player at the weekend with his bulk. It’s the way he is made. If he is the same size next season and bangs in 30 goals I won’t be worried about it.

“Aw thae years ago when we first hooked up,I thought it was a match made in heaven. The money was rolling in,the house was lovely, everyone wanted to be us. Then it started, the cheating, the lies, the abuse. Putting me down in public, telling stories about me to your snivelling pals, trying to prove you were better than me,that I didnae deserve you.

I was so happy when we split up,you were dead to me. But I wished you well in your new life, even though you tried to ruin mine, said I couldnae do without you.

Well,I proved you wrong. I’ve been just champion since then, top of the tree. A few trips abroad every year making new friends every time.

But you know what? I would take you back in a heartbeat,I miss you.”

  16. The new model for Celtic…

    Win SPFL…

    Buy a 4 x £2m players

    Qualify for Europe

Sell 2 players to EPL for £6 m each

All fine but they need to ENGAGE the core support. I’d favour a serious reduction in ticket prices. £10 for u 14s £15 for 15-20 yr olds £20 for Adults ( over 20s), £12.50 for pensioners..

    Watch the stadium fill up.

However, of even greater interest is what any restriction on the cashflow will signal to the SFA who have licensing duties to perform including the obligation to look into the finances of any club to the extent that they need to be satisfied that the club has the resources to meet their financial commitments all the way through to the end of the following season. There is a big BIG test coming for the Administrators of Scottish Football.

    ———————————————————————————

In October 2009 Rangers manager Walter Smith told the world the bank was “running the club”. Two years later Rangers went bust and the SFA/SPL ran around like blue-arsed flies.

Are you expecting something different this time…..????

  18. Mullet&co

I remember when Bobby Murdoch was in his prime, all the talk was of him being overweight. Where Jock Stein learned his lesson was he sent Murdy to a health clinic/farm where he shed a load of weight, returning to Celtic very lean indeed. Sadly, he had just lost ALL of what Murdoch was about and as a player was a shadow of his former self, no pun intended. It did not take long for Big Jock to see the error of his ways and when the weight was back on , Bobby Murdoch was back to his brilliant best.

  20. Today was a special day for me because I handed in my resignation.

No big deal in that normally, but the difference is that I have resigned because I have decided to take early retirement.

I am 60 and have decided, in view of my recent health scares and also what happened to my younger brother, that the time was right for me to call it a day. My last working day will be Friday 6th June.

Tracey and I want to spend time travelling, both in Australia and overseas, while I am still able, because one never knows what is around the corner.

I have worked for a solid 40 years, in various parts of the world, and have many happy and one or two not so happy memories of working life.

I felt a big weight being lifted from my shoulders today and the messages of support I received from my colleagues was heart-warming.

Now where’s my pipe and slippers?

  22. Gold Coast Tom, I retired 10 years ago at 56 years of age. Best decision I ever made, not a single day did I regret it. Enjoy the craic, reinvent yourself, its a new life.

  23. In my opinion, it doesn’t make any sense for the Celtic board to want the dead club in the top flight. As has already been said, surely unfettered access to CL money every season leaves us in a better financial position than having a full stadium at a few games?

Their reluctance to speak out against the cheating and SFA bending/breaking of rules is also hard to fathom.

Perhaps the board are closet Sevco fans or even possibly the mysterious Blue Pitch and Marguerita Holdings. Aha!

The confidence from Celtic fans I speak to want them back is that they won’t get anywhere near us. It will be at least 4 pumpings a season maybe more with cup games.

I would rather they never darken our door again but there are people who just want to beat them regularly.

  28. goldcoast tom and cultsbhoy.i its good to retire early. but a lot of people dont have them options that you have, must be in good paying jobs, anyway best of luck in your retirement.

  29. Genuine question:

How much longer can Hunco continue in their financial distress before Scottish football starts to view them as an unhealthy dynamic that destabilises the game in this country?

Are we talking. 3…4……5 Administration events ?

At some point there will be a collective view that their presence is unhelpful to the long term sustainability of the game. Aberdeen, Motherwell and the Dundee Teams need to step up..

I would have thought also a great opportunity for Partick Thistle to gain a new support. Despite all the chat on here… There are decent Hun fans out there who love football but have had enough of the Ibrox Circus…

  30. Here are two positions that are not mutually exclusive (and not necessarily mine):

    1) I want Sevco out of existence;

    2) I want Sevco in the SPFL top tier;

    The reasoning is as follows

    1) as others have suggested allows almost unrestricted access to CL

    2) if they are to exist then I can generate more income, while due to my superior financial muscle still gain access to the CL more often than not.

Regardless of what happens in the short term at some point in the future a ‘Rangers’ will end up back in the top tier. Where I think the board will go wrong will be to automatically afford them the same ‘respect’ ie seat allocations as the old club.
