Unpredictable Celtic lineup

109

Hibernian were on a run of three consecutive wins when they lost 4-1 to Celtic in Glasgow on 6 December.  Their seven league games since have produced a win at Livingston, two draws and four defeats.  Their last two home games were brutal 0-3 hammerings by St Mirren and Newco.

With Livingston and Ross County both circling the drain Hibs form might not be a relegation worry, but they are only two points ahead of a rejuvenated St Johnstone, who sit 10th.

That game at Celtic Park in December was refreshing inasmuch as the visitors at least tried to play football in the Celtic half.  Whether they will be so bold tonight while in such a poor run of form is doubtful.  Manager Nick Montgomery arrived in September with a strong reputation earned in Australia.  He can afford to lose to Celtic, but there is a limit on how many absolute batterings you can take in front of your own fans before the natives grow restless.

The Celtic line-up is often predictable, but I have no idea how Brendan Rodgers will go tonight.  I have been an advocate of Maik Nawrocki’s but he put in a poor second half against Aberdeen on Saturday before being replaced by Stephen Welsh.  Either one could start alongside Liam Scales.

Alexandro Bernabei also made way for Tony Ralston at left back.  My gut tells me Tony will get the nod from the start tonight.

We now have genuine options on the wing.  Nicolas Kuhn began and ended the move that led to Celtic’s goal on Saturday and will surely get his chance from the start, with Liel Abada dropping to the bench.  The welcome return of Daizen Maeda gives the manager a further option, for either wing.  I expect we will see Luis Palma start on the left, Nicolas on the right, with Daizen and Liel making an appearance at some point.

Kyogo was a spectator until Adam Idah came on at Aberdeen.  Thereafter our Japanese talisman was able to contribute significantly more.  There is no way Brendan will start with Adam on the field but neither of us will be surprised if that changes after the hour mark.

“Desmond inflating the bank balance to facilitate a sale”

The value of a business is its future earnings. Buyers will pay a multiple of annual profit to reflect future earnings potential. Multipliers of x8, x10, even x16 profit are common.

In that respect, the future value of a pound in the bank is a pound. The multiplier is x1.

In football, where profit is more volatile, the valuation trend is a multiple of revenue and we’re seeing deals at x1.5 to x2 revenue recently. Big name clubs attract a premium.

Which is why cash in the bank – beyond what is required to fund operations, growth and any specific project/threat – is of no benefit to the business. It neither generates revenue nor increases earnings. It does virtually nothing for the value of the business beyond its intrinsic value as cash.

You need to put cash to work or return it to the shareholders.

That Celtic have been hoarding cash for some years is an enduring mystery.

If Frame is out due to injury then its Bernabei for me …..yip squeaky bum time , thems the apples when you hope the squad you have can grind out victories and secure the league.

    No more injuries please !

  3. Our back four tonight could very well be AJ, Welsh, Scales and Ralston.

Be honest, who would’ve seen that coming at the end of last season?

Staying over in Broughty ferry then playing Piperdam on the Saturday .

Just wondered if you had any info …….

Ps ….played Piperdam last September and had the privilege of getting my photo taken on a Celic buggy (lovely green and white) The reggie on it ……..LOCHEEBHOY2…..

  5. It’s fair to say the footsteps have been getting louder in recent weeks as a famous Gaa man used say to me when discussing threats of opposition and now it”s rosary beads time. There is a real title chase now for a change and time for the Hoops seriously show bottle and meet the challenge.

Great to see Maeda has returned and our little dynamo as usual will be doing the work of two men if selected. Adam Idah is a streetwise operator with 20 full International caps under his belt and countless ones at underage and after injury unfortunately lost his place at Norwich. He has played against top class opposition and only recently gave big Virgil Van Dyke a very uncomfortable time, having a goal marked off for a marginal offside and scoring against the Dutch from the penalty spot. Still only 22 years of age. Did well on Saturday with the goal assist and laying on a sitter for O’riley. Interesting to see will he start tonight?

Very few changes from Saturday with Kuhn, who really impressed on Saturday and rescued the Hoops from defeat with that goal. looking forward to the game tonight and hoping for a vast improvement and three points .

  6. Bernebei for me listen to Scales today.Too much chopping and changing in the defence has not helped.Same midfield, they cant all be as bad as Saturday.

    Kuhn. Idah ( let’s see ). Palm

On the day of one of the most important games,we have the Agenda Agitators on,with the same old crap.

A mix of rumour, fanciful claptrap, innuendo, opinion, all put together, and passed off as fact.A few on here, like sheep,go along with it,for whatever reason, certainly not to help the team, but unwittingly helping out our enemies as much as the Refs they hate do.We need unity,if you can’t see that, the word Dullard comes to mind.

If we are not 3-5-2 then I’d go:

    Hart

    Ralston – Rocky – Scales – Bernie

    CalMac

    MOR – Palma

    Kuhn – Idah – Maeda

Drop a few who have been off it a bit lately (MOR excluded as he is still working/trying hard and a little unlucky for me).

    QB

  8. For the record.

    Palma has scored 10 goals

    Palma has 12 assists..

Compare these figures to Maeda this season.

Someone actually slaughtered Palma for some poor crossing on Saturday. Can’t have been watching Maeda since joining. One great cross to Jota, the exception to the rule.

    If he starts,best of luck.Score.

  9. Just off the phone from talking to a dear friend. He’s an avid Leicester City fan, season ticket holder all his life man and boy. He was saying , at the end of Brendans tenure , the fans were sing Tippy tappy, passy backy.

Apparently it was rife, and he also pointed out that after BR left, no English club were clamouring to get him signed up. !!

    Says it all really.

Maeda and Kuhn tonight with Kyogo through the middle.

I sense we will win big tonight, could be wrong though!!

  11. How can anyone justify having upwards of £70m in the bank whilst the team has been allowed to be downgraded and certain parts of the ground ( the old stand ) not been upgraded for over 30 years.

  15. THE HAND OF GOD on 7TH FEBRUARY 2024 11:14 AM

Good morning Hot Smoked read your post from last night and stand by my opinion that yesterday’s leader was embarrassing. It is of course an opinion and Paul is entitled to his.CQN used to be a respected source of all things Celtic but it now gives the impression that it is in fact a mouthpiece for the board and Peter Lawwell in particular. Most sane people realise that in terms of running Celtic as a business he has done a great job but returning to the club has helped only to create the toxic atmosphere, rightly or wrong ly,which grips the club at the moment.

*he never actually left and was put in a position n the European Board which I believe he now chairs if not then second in command to help rid the game of charlatans like the deid team board.

  16. Has anyone ever heard of a football club paying £12 m in corporation tax?

all clubs in the uk, that run at a profit, pay corporation tax in that tax year.

an in profit year however can be offset to the previous 3 years losses.

simply if club x declares a profit of £10m in this financial year, , but had cumulative losses in the previous 3 years of say £5m, then corporation tax for this year will be applied at whatever percentage it is to the £5m.

as to a point made earlier either by tbb or auldheid, cash in the bank doing nothing for most companies would be seen as a bad strategy, and would be better spent on infrastrucutre project (ie cvapital investments, which in themselves attract tax reliefs) or to improve other revenue streams via investments (player aquisions).

the other option buying back shares from shareholders, or paying outrageous dividens.

a very quick scan of deloitte shows literally hundreds of sports clubs paying taxes.

why should celtic plc not pay tax ? we are not amazon or a rangers type club.

the ambulances dont pay for themselves.

and if an organisation makes money, and doesnt invest it

  17. ps,

we dont pay tax on the £70m in the bank, that is accumilated profits, that was already taxed in the relevant tax year as profit.

  18. Watching and reading from afar, but the mood amongst many fans is outright hostility to the Board, some of it warranted, some of it not.

Booing the team after a victory is not a good look either.

However, we are where we are and need to make do with what we’ve got. As fan’s we can either back the club, all of them, and help in the huge battle ahead to secure the Title.

Or, well, we can watch the Huns become top dogs again.

Quite a simple choice you would think, but maybe some are so focussed on individuals that everything else comes second?

I can see both sides of the argument, but this argument is getting us nowhere, anywhere, anytime , soon.

This is not the 90s. We are a well run , but risk adverse football club. The Huns going bust and COVID have ensured we are ultra cautious in all we do. So, we need to become more innovative and braver in certain departments. That will take time.

In the meantime, I really see no other options than to back the club to the hilt in the coming months.

  19. pps,

the £70m in the bank is hopefully earning some sort of interest at least.

one positve item for sure with ffp, and i know it is called something else now, clubs are being forced to manage finances responsibily and are paying more tax.

  20. very dry subject – but if it interests anyone – maybe chairbhoy regarding stock exchange announcements and communicarions to shareholders.

  21. What is the justification for having so much cash in the bank whilst the team is weaker than last year and parts of the ground are poorly maintained, ie the main stand

Celtic Football Club is delighted to announce that it has today approved significant investment into a state-of-the-art re-development of Celtic’s Barrowfield Training Centre, in the heart of the East End of Glasgow, as we aim to continue to create Celtic’s stars of the future.

The development will deliver a fantastic new complex, hosting Celtic’s boys’ and girls’ Academies and will also be the new dedicated training centre for Celtic FC Women’s First Team.

Today’s announcement re-emphasises our strategy of maintaining a strong commitment to both developing our own players and investing in women’s football, with the project representing the largest infrastructure investment by the Club since the redevelopment of Celtic Park in the late 1990s.

The new training centre will feature:

New indoor arena, featuring full-sized IFA-approved artificial surface

Combination of outdoor natural grass and artificial pitches

    State-of-the-art gym/fitness facilities

Celtic Academy and Celtic FC Women office areas

    New changing facilities

    Medical suites for player treatment/rehab

    Sports science centre

    Analysis centre

    Classroom/learning facilities

or recruit a Head of Football or a full time Doctor

I thought this would be another alert from Martin Lewis … turns out it was a stress level warning , first time when the Jambos swung over the corner for Shankland to nod and secondly when the Ross County centre half just ran into the 6 yard box and headed off the bar. Worryingly , same thing happened on Saturday, just prior to the sheep breaking out their pen …
