Utterly gallus under a Glasgow night sky

623

If Craig Gordon had the fortitude of his more vocal critics he would have crawled into a shell and you would be reading about a plucky Celtic defeat this morning. Fortunately for Celtic, Craig is grounded in solid earth.

He’s overcome greater challenges than his recent loss of form. Great to have you back, Craig.

Credit is due right across the back line, as well as to the goalkeeper, despite the loss of three goals. City have some of the finest attacking players currently plying their trade in Europe. A victory last night would have rewritten record books for English football clubs, but time and again Erik Sviatchenko and Kolo Toure timed runs, blocks and tackles perfectly.

I’m having trouble figuring out how Mikael Lustig can still put that kind of performance in. His fitness levels seemed to be inextricably heading south last season, but he’s back as good as ever. Kieran Tierney is that rare property, a left back with pace and endurance, who can defend and cross. He’ll continue to improve.

Tom Rogic was totally in control of what was an incredibly difficult area of the field to play football. Our performance levels followed the fuel in his tank. When he faded, we faded.

Brown and Bitton did very well too. Scott forced his influence onto the game in the first minute, which set the tempo.

I know Nir Bitton looks like he lacks urgency. In his own penalty area. With City players bearing down on him. On nights like this the easiest thing in the world is to play it long when under pressure. The hardest thing to do is to hold the ball, draw pressure but try to create space for others. It’s what the very top midfield players at the very top clubs do.  You’ll remember seeing the same from Nir in the second half.

Hands up if you thought James Forrest had this level of performance in him? His timed run from deep at the opening goal was straight from the training ground, but executed perfectly. We didn’t get him into the game often enough, but his work off the ball created space for Dembele.

Scott Sinclair was another who put in a brave performance; brave in the sense that he held the ball often under intense pressure. He looks like he’s enjoying life in Glasgow.

And what of Moussa? I doubt any of us knew the calibre of player we recruited. It was a gamble for the club and for the player, but it’s paid off for both, and how. His first goal was fortuitous – no bad thing in a striker. His second belied his age. It was utterly gallus. No other word for it.

Well done Brendan. I thought you got it wrong in Barcelona but you went toe-to-toe against the top manager in the world, who travelled home with plenty to think about.

What a great phenomenon this whole Champions League business is. Even Newco earned around £500 from selling stadium tours to visiting fans. Happy to help, guys.  High-fives all-round the city.

Thanks for the fantastic support for the Foundation ahead of the Great Scottish Run Half Marathon on Sunday.  I’m now carb-loading for the first time in my life.  It’s as much fun as it sounds.  Any more help greatly appreciated.

  1. A wee repost from last night, like to thank The Highland Bhoys – Rosshire CSC for their hospitality and taking me to and from the game last night. Left Inverness at 1pm and back at 2:30 the following morning. Like others probably one of the best days/nights I’ve had at Celtic Park. Hail Hail Hebcelt

  8. You really wonder how many of these “statements” one club can release before someone considers the veiled threats, aggressive posturing, blatant lies, and outstanding hypocrisy risks bringing the game into disrepute…

Increasingly, it looks like they are at war with the SFA, which, frankly, serves the SFA right for their appalling appeasement of that rabble.

But if rumours are true and they need to play at Hamden for a year or two…

Just watching the game again. On the 49th minute an old favourite of mine is belted out by the whole stadium, Nananana hey hey Glasgow Celtic. Awesome, and Steve McManaman praised it as he did all night, knowing he rarely sees anything like that in England.

and how it might be interpreted by Freud

FOLLOWING yesterday’s Judicial Panel decision Rangers will be demanding urgent, shocked sanctions in respect of the assaults by Hibernian on Rangers players and officials ever. .

The Scottish FA must now make sure Rangers matches are played at Hampden.

Rangers were surprised. disappointed by nature. charges fundamentally flawed, and cannot understand.

Rangers supporters coming onto the field of play and/or assaulting players and officials.

Rangers astonished by the fact Hibernian, won the Scottish FA, cup , and we fight them charging on.

Also we want the legal adviser of Scottish Football’s two governing bodies to tell us what is the good governance and integrity of Scottish Football,

We are disturbing when at the party to be at the centre of the conflict.

Rangers are also extremely disappointed at Mr Petrie’s continued failure to issue an apology in respect of the assaults on our players and officials.

Atthe Cup Final Rangers shared the outrage and concern of Stewart Regan. ‘It was appalling. In the UK this is one of the worst incidents of its kind I’ve seen.’

on from the Final, the Scottish FA have still not added a trophy to rangers.

Rangers were pleased to provide evidence to Sheriff Bowen and offered guidance from our own very experienced trophy collection security team that 3rd Lanarks history is lying dormant, and we, the rangers are entitled to take these over.

Rangers would hope all of Scottish Football would be united in agreeing this is paramount.

Policing and stewarding at the match. Rangers remain disappointed and concerned. that the report did not address many of the issues raised by our security team who attack individuals

Hirenian winning the Cup Final is alarming and a stain on Scottish football.

The SFA must confront and learn from the issues that arose.

Rangers owe it to our players and supporters to ensure that the Scottish FA’s duty of giving us the trophy is upheld and that those with authority in Scottish Football create a safe environment for the game.

It should be understood Rangers will not tolerate any of their employees being catholicky, or having Joseph Anthony type names.

    We arra Peep el.

Roger Hynd.? Fond memories of watching the 67 ECW Final with a blue nose pal.He claimed that the Big lump got the Number 9 gig because John Lawrence insisted that Hynd played in preference to Willoughby..Makes sense in Deady Bear Land.Hynd was related to Bill Shankly and became a gym teacher !

*When I was in high school we had a maths teacher that took charge of the fitba teams, he had a few seasons with us without playing a first team game before stoatin about the minors, was with Forfar when I was there and used tae wear his Montrose blazer tae school.

Anyway he had a schoolboys fitba handbook which he passed around and in it was a Scotland or Glasgow Schoolboys select which included willoughby and his cousin forrest who were on the deid teams books by then. This was during our years in the wilderness and we young bhoys were wondering why we couldnae sign such talent.

willoughby was a player and after an EC game where they literally played Real Madrid aff the park only tae lose tae a last minute galloping major goal the Spaniards were raving about him.

Somehow they contrived tae curtail his talent, he was a far better prospect than durranty, and he left for the sheep who he actually played more games for. I saw him in a Dryborough Cup game at Parkheid playing at full back wearing red boots.

forrest was the one who made the breakthrough first though and was a real thorn in big Billy’s side; he scored goals for fun and came close one season tae James Edwards most goals scored in a season in british football.

He paid the price though for Berwick and was replaced in the side by roger the dodger, eventually ending up at Pittodrie tae where he also played more games for the sheep than the huns, one of only 3 Garngard born centre’s tae play for the national side.

As for Shank’s nephew, he only played about 30 games for the deid side but did score the equaliser in the Jinky/007/Helenio Herrera game at the village of the damned. He floated around the football league for a few years and was voted intae Birmingham City’s Hall of Fame alongside trevor francis, kenny burns, Bob Latchford and Bob Hatton.

He was a “star’ for the blues in a side that contained jimmy calderwood, pretty much says it all.
