van Dijk and the 50-80 game value opportunity

961

Likely summer signing number two, Virgil van Dijk, arrived in Glasgow this morning for a medical after terms were agreed with the player and his club, Groningen.  The 6’4” player, who will be 22 next month, is a Dutch under-21 international.

Virgil is two weeks younger than Victor Wanyama and emerged into the Groningen team around the same time Victor pitched up in Glasgow, they have made almost exactly the same number of appearances for their respective clubs, 62 top flight games in total, in the case of Virgil.

62 games is an interesting figure.  Enough to bed in, catch local scouts’ eyes and have well-travelled men from Glasgow watch several times before making a recommendation.  Not enough to catch the eyes of less well-organised, but no less resourceful, scouts in the bottom half of the English Premier League, who Celtic now seem to compete for talent with.

If Virgil is the real deal, another couple of dozen games might have changed the competition for his signature.

Is there a 50-80 game window which can deliver sufficient evidence of a player’s talent, but not too much evidence, which evaporates the value gap?  This hypothesis would be easy to test and if it holds would provide an interesting filter on the hundreds of names pushed to the club each year.

Have you booked for the Lions Roar event at Celtic Park tomorrow night?  Last and precious opportunity to watch how the European Cup was won with the men who did the work.  In short, priceless.  Tickets available here.

Speaking of the men who won it, buy Heart of a Lion here:

  1. I have a lot of faith in our scouting system, mean who honestly had heard of Henke or Lubo before they came to the Mighty Celtic – – I hadn;t.

Ok I hear you cry, we’ve signed a few tatties as well but overall and more recently we’ve signed a good few good uns.

One would assume most of the armed forces would have people being being upfront that they do not agree with it, than hijacking it for commercialization.

Why were the armed forces marching with the Orange Order last week?

  6. Joe The Led…

Celtic midfielder Joe Ledley has explained that the Celts have returned after a much-needed break, and are now looking forward to their first qualifier in the Champions League.

The Hoops kick-off their Champions League campaign in July in the second stage of the competition. The 2012/13 SPL winners, along with Romanian giants Steaua Bucharest, comprise the 32 sides that are involved on Monday, when the Champions League draws take place.

The Welsh international has insisted that although the matches will be difficult, Neil Lennon’s men have a lot of time to prepare.

“We didn’t have long but it was nice to have rest but have to get back to work and qualify for Europe”, Ledley said in a press conference, via his club’s feed.

“That’s why we are back early to get ready for the first qualifier. It will be difficult but have long time to prepare.

“It’s massive for players and club and hopefully we can do it again. Best competition in the world and every player wants to play in it.”

Ledley – who has lifted two Scottish Premier League trophies and two Scottish Cups with the club – also hopes that they can emulate their performances of last season, this time as well.

The Hoops achieved a domestic double in the 2012/13 season – clinching the SPL title, as well as the Scottish Cup. They also had a fair run in the Champions League, where they reached the Round of 16 of the competition.

Lennon’s men famously recorded a win against Spanish heavyweights Barcelona in the group stages of the tournament at Celtic Park too.

“We made history last season but we have to start again and hopefully we can kick on again this season”, Ledley continued.

“It’s just about preparing ourselves. That’s what we did last season and we will go there once the [Champions League] draw is made.

“It doesn’t bother us who we get. Just need to wait for draw and go from there.”

That they are allowed to celebrate their ‘culture’ does not in itself bother me. The fact that choose to do so in swagger and song, that too does not bother me. What bothers me is the frequency of their culture fests and the crassness and bigotry that they so often flaunt which in turn is then lauded as street theatre with a carnival atmosphere, the fabric of society even.

Something quite wrong, quite sick in that.

  20. IF Victor and Hooper are to leave I would like to see Celtic control the timing of this.

Hooper is unlikely to be moving to an EPL club with European interest, so we should keep him for the qualifiers and then allow him to move on in August. The fact that he would be then be cup-tied for European comps shouldn’t affect the price we get for him.

There is a possibility of Champions League teams being interested in Vic, but they will need to pay a premium if they are to sign him before he plays in the qualifiers for Celtic. Otherwise he too should be kept until August.

  21. The only way to beat the huns was always on the park. Sevco changes nothing. We can still only beat the huns on the park. SFA can do their worst, cheat all they like. We will win on the park.

Same goes in the rest of life. Beat them on the park. The big park of life. Succeed where they fail. Be strong, stand up, be true and keep the faith that had 80,000 partying in Seville, making friends and winning hearts.

The Celtic PLC will pick the battles they can win. The same PLC will deliver us from the SPhell. Eventually.

Can’t wait for another season with the Champions, Celtic.

Gave my Dad “The Heart of a Lion” yesterday. His immediate reaction: Willie Wallace was a great Celtic player. We got him from Hearts, didn’t we? The only good that came out of Tynecastle.

I think we can trust that PL will get the best possible deal for Victor Wanyama and Gary Hooper.

I’m sure that if big Vic goes to a team like Southampton there will be a sell on clause.

Like KINGLUBO, I too have a lot of faith in our scouting system.

The fact that a team like Southampton can even bid such money shows why we must redouble our efforts to leave Scottish football.

Off out to show once more how not to pick winners at Royal Ascot. Why can you always pick the winner when you have no money on it.?

“What made up story u talking about?”

Hooper’s going to Southampton, I mean Norwich, did I say Norwich, that should have been Reading, erm … make that Hull for £4.5m – not a single quote to back it up. Joe Ledley said yesterday Hooper is ‘happy at Celtic’.

“If hooper wanted to stay a deal would have been done by now. He may still sign and hope he does but at minute hes waiting on us offering alot more money or a better club comeing in for him.”

I agree he is trying to get a better deal from Celtic, as is Anto Stokes (although he’s not been constantly linked to other club’s so no one is suggesting he should be punted).

I’m not sure if it’s a lot more money either are after or a little bit more money. I think we can only guess at the situation.

The point is we are reading negative stories about Celtic players leaving all the time – I work in the media and I know there is no substance to any of it.

See this game that is postponed so we can play Liverpool, is this just the second season it’s happened ?

    proudbhoy,

Assuming that the 4.5M offer from Hull is real, even if Celtic did accept it do you really think GH would go there?

Accepting the offer would only set a (very poor) price that would increase interest from other clubs with no gain to Celtic but lots of gain for GH.
