van Dijk and the 50-80 game value opportunity

961

Likely summer signing number two, Virgil van Dijk, arrived in Glasgow this morning for a medical after terms were agreed with the player and his club, Groningen.  The 6’4” player, who will be 22 next month, is a Dutch under-21 international.

Virgil is two weeks younger than Victor Wanyama and emerged into the Groningen team around the same time Victor pitched up in Glasgow, they have made almost exactly the same number of appearances for their respective clubs, 62 top flight games in total, in the case of Virgil.

62 games is an interesting figure.  Enough to bed in, catch local scouts’ eyes and have well-travelled men from Glasgow watch several times before making a recommendation.  Not enough to catch the eyes of less well-organised, but no less resourceful, scouts in the bottom half of the English Premier League, who Celtic now seem to compete for talent with.

If Virgil is the real deal, another couple of dozen games might have changed the competition for his signature.

Is there a 50-80 game window which can deliver sufficient evidence of a player’s talent, but not too much evidence, which evaporates the value gap?  This hypothesis would be easy to test and if it holds would provide an interesting filter on the hundreds of names pushed to the club each year.

Have you booked for the Lions Roar event at Celtic Park tomorrow night?  Last and precious opportunity to watch how the European Cup was won with the men who did the work.  In short, priceless.  Tickets available here.

Speaking of the men who won it, buy Heart of a Lion here:

  1. Morning all.

Someone earlier mentioned big Jan Venegoor. I have a wee story about him. At the end of a home match the players come down to gate 2 to collect their car keys. At one such time JV was waiting for his keys and as usual was humming/singing a celtic song.

One of the security guys ( a good guy r*****s supporter) jokingly suggested that he should sing a wee hun song for a change.

The big man thought about it for a minute then started to sing “oh the r*****s are shi*e”.

Gave me his Tommy Burns game shirt signed, before he left for good. Cracking big guy.

I would also be delighted to see Hooper stay, but I think it is clear from his interviews after the Cup Final that he is waiting to see who comes in for him before deciding where his future will be. He will almost certainly move on.

Stokes on the other hand has made it clear in interviews that he wants to stay and that he and Celtic are not that far apart in agreeing a new deal – i.e. he is trying to get a few more quid/Nando’s vouchers before agreeing to stay.

    TET,

Huns played Chelsea in similar circumstances in 2011, read on FF yesterday and seemed to be accurate. It caused a thread on SPL being run for/by PL to end rather swiftly.

If speculation is your bag and you prefer to believe media scare stories you probably won’t be interested in Joe Ledley’s quote, at the launch of the new shirt.

Ledley said: “Hopefully the club can sort Victor and Gary out and get them new deals. I know they are both happy at the club and I hope they can stay here for many years to come.”

Celtic dinnae have to cash in their chips. If they do, the buyer will have to pay top $ to prise away our finest players. We are in an excellent position and we are just going to get a lot stronger no matter what happens, domestically and Globally.

Thanks for the tip about where the players collect their car keys.

If you see someone cutting about the southside of Glasgow in a shiny pimped-up Maserati after the first home game of the season, that’ll be ole Johnny!

“What made up story u talking about?”

Hooper’s going to Southampton, I mean Norwich, did I say Norwich, that should have been Reading, erm … make that Hull for £4.5m – not a single quote to back it up. Joe Ledley said yesterday Hooper is ‘happy at Celtic’.

Norwich were in for hoops but have since signed someone else.

    I did say the 4.5m hull -reportedley-offered.

I know what way it works, i know 99% of its bull but its easy to see hooper will only sign new deal if the best to bid for him are hull, southampton etc

At the moment i think we are his 2nd choice, weather or not he gets his 1st choice is another question.

I just want our team ready asap as we have big games just around the corner.

  11. Champions league qualifier is our main concern now..absolutely paramount for our club as a whole to advance in europe.

Our success in europe alone is showing we are completely self sufficient. This in turn, despite what our detractors say …really gets up theyre nose.without our european runs, they will use it to TELL us that we are bored and need a rangers.

Young Celt set for World Cup opener

CELTIC youngster Jackson Irvine is set to star for Australia as they get their Under-20 World Cup campaign underway against Columbia tomorrow (Saturday) night in Turkey.

The young Socceroos face a daunting challenge against the talented South American outfit who are considered one of the tournament favourites.

They will then take on El Salvador (June 25) and hosts Turkey (June 28) in their remaining group matches. The top two teams in the six groups and four of the best third-placed teams will advance to the knock-out stages.

Meanwhile, Hoops defender Efe Ambrose was part of the Nigeria side that was narrowly defeated by Uruguay in the Confederations Cup match last night in Brazil – their first loss in 19 matches.

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel had brought the Super Eagles level shortly before the break with a well-taken goal after Diego Lugano had opened the scoring.

However, experienced striker Diego Forlan´s second-half strike earned Uruguay maximum reward, leaving Stephen Keshi´s side facing an uphill task against Spain in their final group fixture.

  14. I believe Hooper will be away for circa 8 million, Celtic are just waiting for the right deal Hooper probably negotiated a wee wedge for himself and that is what is taking so long, not to mention a sell on % from his previous club

We’ll wait and see what happens. I believe Hooper wants to stay and if he doesn’t – Celtic will decide when he goes, and I’m happy with that situation.

It gets tiresome that chancers in the media set the agenda and some people buy into it at supersonic speed.

That’s up to people on here what they want to believe – but I’m simply providing an opposing view and willing to take a quote from Joe Ledley at face value rather than panic about lazy journalism from folk with an agenda against our club.

What exactly is legal or illegal under this bizarre SNP anti-sectarian hotchpotch ?

    Does ANYBODY know ?

If Christy Moore was asked to make the half-time draw at CP & to sing a song, would he have to be careful what he sang.

If he chose to sing the National Anthem of our nearest neighbours would he be liable to be arrested on the spot ?

If not, why would some completely law-abiding youngster be treated differently ?
