van Dijk and the 50-80 game value opportunity

961

Likely summer signing number two, Virgil van Dijk, arrived in Glasgow this morning for a medical after terms were agreed with the player and his club, Groningen.  The 6’4” player, who will be 22 next month, is a Dutch under-21 international.

Virgil is two weeks younger than Victor Wanyama and emerged into the Groningen team around the same time Victor pitched up in Glasgow, they have made almost exactly the same number of appearances for their respective clubs, 62 top flight games in total, in the case of Virgil.

62 games is an interesting figure.  Enough to bed in, catch local scouts’ eyes and have well-travelled men from Glasgow watch several times before making a recommendation.  Not enough to catch the eyes of less well-organised, but no less resourceful, scouts in the bottom half of the English Premier League, who Celtic now seem to compete for talent with.

If Virgil is the real deal, another couple of dozen games might have changed the competition for his signature.

Is there a 50-80 game window which can deliver sufficient evidence of a player’s talent, but not too much evidence, which evaporates the value gap?  This hypothesis would be easy to test and if it holds would provide an interesting filter on the hundreds of names pushed to the club each year.

Have you booked for the Lions Roar event at Celtic Park tomorrow night?  Last and precious opportunity to watch how the European Cup was won with the men who did the work.  In short, priceless.  Tickets available here.

Speaking of the men who won it, buy Heart of a Lion here:

Tom Rogic’s introduction for the Socceroos against Iraq was a key moment in World Cup qualifier.

It might be a long time until Brazil for the Socceroos’ veterans to all remain fit and firing, but on the flipside, imagine what another year under the belt will do for the squad’s youngsters.

For so long, fans have been calling for the next brigade to be given more responsibility, and with 30 minutes to go against Iraq, Osieck hauled off Brett Holman to let 20-year-old Tom Rogic work his magic.

The prodigious former Central Coast Mariners man changed the dynamic of the game. Suddenly, Iraq had to contend with a powerful player who could glide through their heart. He might not have provided a finished product, but he shook up a defence that was frustrating everyone wearing green and gold.

A year ago, Rogic was preparing for his first full A-League season, having broken into Central Coasts’ ranks in 2012.

Now Rogic, who also has the distinction of having represented the Australia’s indoor football side, the Futsalroos, has the chance to represent the Socceroos in Brazil.

And if he continues to improve on the same trajectory, the side will have another crafty player to take the burden of Mark Bresciano.

“Going to a World Cup. Unreal,” Rogic said after the match.

“I would have never thought that was possible a year ago. To be here now it’s still hard to believe.”

The stage was set for the Celtic starlet to make his mark, just like Tommy Oar and Robbie Kruse had in the previous two clashes.

“I spent half an hour on there. I was obviously a bit nervous, but (Osieck) gave me a few words to give me confidence before I went on. He told me to do my best once I got on, do the job, relax and have a bit of fun.

“It was good to get out there, but the main thing was we got the win.”

What was the feeling like when he saw Josh Kennedy’s goal hit the back of the net?

    “It was a priceless moment.

“I didn’t know what to do. The main thing was we got the win. It was getting close towards the end there.”

Without question I think you and I would be on different sides of the right wing left wing divide.

Equally without question you and I would have the same, or very similar ,concerns about social welfare programs for the underprivileged.

The only difference we would have is how to achieve the desired outcomes.

We`re on the same page, but we have different labels.

    I.E.the labels are meaningless.

    For me,it`s simple.No profit,no welfare.

If that`s capitalism, then so be it.

No profit,no charity. Is that not how Celtic were founded?

    Raise capital.Start a business.Make a profit.Assist the needy.Issue shares.make the business grow.

And here we are 125 years later arguing and discussing the labels instead of celebrating the results, both on the field and off.

Cashflow is the lifeblood of every society and economic system. How you invoke this flow is influenced by the political culture you are brought up with or if you are very lucky; the one you dictate.

Economics is therefore irrelevant to any social /political debate.

Socialism (net of the above I’d therefore about being nice)

  9. macjay,

    Fair enough :))

Corporations rule the world then, for the benefit of us all……

Thanks be to heaven for the rozzers who stop any upstarts disrupting the flow of profit to the strongest. At least they let us dish out some charity to those who are too weak to escape their unfortunate background of poverty….which profit will save one day. Is that the vision that Adam Smith had?

FFS, didn’t want to develop this, just about to hit my scratcher :)) You should leave it at that and let me have the last word – it’s my right as a left winger :))

  10. Still can’t help thinking that the exchange of milk and meat to help me and my family prosper on our wee bit of weedgie greenbelt, for the use of my fence building abilities and installation of my state of the art drainage systems, which I all learned from the local soothsayer, could all happen without the need for the lifeblood that is cashflow and profit.

When cash gets introduced to this system, folk like me just waste it on vino collapso and 10 drunken hands of poker to the local landowner – who was the one what was so keen to introduce this cashflow/ profit system in the first place……

I refer the right honourable gentleman to my insect analogy above :) And the use of trade in Europe’s subjugation of mainland America, where trade value was completely subjective, and hastily applied to every living organism on the planet, and then developped into the “facsimile” of cash (?!?), ie stick an IOU through a fax machine and hey presto, you’ve doubled the value of your own cash portfolio.
