van Dijk signs four year deal

1571

Absolutely delighted at the arrival of Dutch under-21 international central defender, Virgil van Dijk, on a four year deal.  A central defender was one of three priorities for this summer and we have secured our first choice target.

The signing will also give a boost to the squad, and a timely reminder to all that amidst talk of player potentially leaving ‘at the right price’, the Celtic Story is one of progress.

Celtic had the tallest team in the Champions League last season.  They were also top scorers from headed goals in the competition until Bayern Munich caught them in the semi-finals.  With the addition of two 6’4” players (van Dijk and Balde) we look to be consolidating our strengths.

Welcome to Celtic, Virgil.

  1. to be honest I would rather victor and hooper were sold asap given that it might upset the European preparation. so long as the scouting is good we will be able to replace any player, there is always younger players emerging with a desire to showboat their talents at a club like celtic.

if we repeat our success off and on the field over the next 3 years our talent pool and ceiling will raise beyond anything we have had in the last 15 years. the best young players will want to come to celtic to learn, develop and grow. some players will leave because their stock is so high. the players that excel with benefit and so to will we.

We’ll build the core of our team around the players that want to stay long term, bhoys like ledley, brown, Sammy, milgrew etc…

if we don’t sell, the message sent to the best young players is a negative one and will act to restrict our talent pool and ceiling.

May I second A Stor’s very sensible suggestion of focusing on 1 major issue rather than a raft of questions. His proposal seemed, to me a pragmatic way to proceed. This is a positive step and has my full and unequivocal backing. It is time for deeds.

I see Craigie made a quick amendment to clarify what he meant re getting Hateley off the payroll. Although I think I preferred his first option – “Please make arrangements to terminate immediately”!

could not agree more, last season was great the league title, Scottish cup and last 16 in C/L. if that’s not a success I don’t know what is.

in doing this celtic raised the club’s profile in Europe again, cleared long standing debts and became financially secure. the season that passed started with Ki being sold for £6.3 million and a debate about his loss to the team. this loss was minimal.

so far this season we have off loaded about 6 first team fringe player and we will likely see 2 of last season key players sold for £19 million. used correctly that will be reinvested in the first team and all other aspects of the club. we don’t know the effects of these players leaving, if they do leave of course.

we have brought in 2 (what would appear) quality young players, as well as rogic in January and a couple of others will follow should hooper and victor leave. there will be players looking to take the mantle of hooper and victor, the opportunity will arise because they leave. next season we will see who steps up.

If this season has taught use anything then I hope it is; to have faith that other players will be identified and to give our young players a change.

I still think Victor should stay for another year. More exposure and the chance of an even bigger club coming in. He is young and has time on his side. Playing regular first team football is what he needs.

That’s VERY true ……. I had some great experiences in my young days of following Celtic…

  15. No chance of big Vic and Hooper leaving. Why would we sell our 2 top players (unless the want to go that is)? No top European side would let their top2 stars leave esp if they had champions league aspirarions. The ‘target’ isn’t qualifying for the champions league or last 16 or whatever. The aim is to win it. To win the champions league is what my goal is as a celtic fan.

  16. tommytwiststommyturns on

Gordon_J : I think it was ttt who said yesterday that Victor is far from the finished article and I’m in complete agreement with that. He should stay with us for another season and develop as a player before moving on next summer.

Reading between the lines, I assume his “advisors” can smell the money and want it now, not next year!

My thoughts exactly ……. let the SFA / MSM / MIB witness BDO / the Courts sort out the mess they created……..the main objective has been achieved…. The corrupt oldco are deed, never toreturn, and newco will be next fr the chop ……… Meanwhile, I want our Board to continue to concentrate on CELTIC, on taking us forward …….. If we get mixed up in their mess, it will do us more harm than good …….. Hail Hail

Don’t get me wrong…… I have already stated (forcibly) that their corruption has cost every Celtic fan, and every fan of every other Club in Scotland dearly, but we are not going to get any of our money etc back……we can only leave it to BDO / Courts to ensure justice is achieved ….. God help Scottish Football if people like ogilvie are not brought to justice / held to account ….

Let’s be totally clear. We won the big cup and 9 in a row DESPITE the old board. We were blessed in that we had Jock Stein as manager. We also had several exceptional players and a magnificent on field captain.

But I must agree; it was great to grow up a Celtic fan in those days.

If Wanyama stays another year we’ll be lucky to get £6m. If he’s not going to extend his contract we should let him go now and invest in new players.

Celtic enjoyed unprecedented success but it made the board complacent. Fergus drove the club forward on all fronts in order to make us sustainable at a level above our national league. Hopefully we continue to sign young, high quality players who are hungry for success and not revert to SDM’s tactic of signing big name, low talent chancers on big money…look what that got ’em!!!!!

  22. ernie lynch

celtic enjoyed unparalleled success was in spite of, not because of the board, it helped that players could not run down their contracts and walk for free and t.v money was not an issue.

since celtic become a plc we have built the biggest stadium in Scotland, won the league more than any other team, reached a eufa cup final and reached quarters finals on one occasion, reached the last 16 of the c/l (I think) 4 time, we have won the Scottish cup lots of times, as well as the league cup.

we are in a good financial position and we have plans to develop the stadium envois to make celtic park a world class venue befitting our club.

this has all been achieved while swimming against the tide that is freedom of contract, t.v monies polarising the widening the gap between big and small nations.

yes the plc has not always been rosie and have made many a mistake, but overall we are in a far better place than was the case before Fergus.

p.s. we also killed of the rangers

  24. I’m with those who think that Victor isn’t quite ready yet for one of the major Leagues. Although his passing has improved it’s still too erratic IMO & I agree that another season with us would be best for his personal development.

However, I think it’s pretty clear we’re going to sell at least one of Victor, Fraser or Gary & I think from the Club’s perspective Victor would be the easiest to replace.

Celtic’s needs must come first, so for me it’s bye bye Victor.

Last seasons achievements were beyond reasonable expectations.

Sure we expected the spl and at least one domestic trophy but the champions league campaign… well let me be honest here. .. a lot of luck involved there too.

Dont get me wrong… we dont get much luck in europe so it was maybe overdue.

But. .. I dont really expect a repeat of cl success this season unless we get that luck again… and thats with or without hooper / wanyama.

So… if the price is right and they dont want to sign a new deal with us…. its time to say farewell and good luck.

Victor will get far more exposure playing in the EPL with Southampton than he will playing for Celtic in the CL. He will earn far more too. As well as another lucrative contract, Robbie Keane is the way to do it. He will have a better chance to improve as well. It’s bye bye Victor.

Can’t help but think the CL qualifiers will be doubly difficult with 2 or 3 newcomers in the team.

  34. Bob Kelly might have signed the bulk of the Lions, but he also got rid of great players like Paddy Crerand. If he had not very reluctantly agreed to Mr Stein running the football at the club, we probably would never have grown as we have. Those Lions who were at Celtic Park won nothing for years. In fact, Billy McNeill is on record as saying he was actively thinking of leaving in order to win medals.
