Absolutely delighted at the arrival of Dutch under-21 international central defender, Virgil van Dijk, on a four year deal. A central defender was one of three priorities for this summer and we have secured our first choice target.
The signing will also give a boost to the squad, and a timely reminder to all that amidst talk of player potentially leaving ‘at the right price’, the Celtic Story is one of progress.
Celtic had the tallest team in the Champions League last season. They were also top scorers from headed goals in the competition until Bayern Munich caught them in the semi-finals. With the addition of two 6’4” players (van Dijk and Balde) we look to be consolidating our strengths.
Welcome to Celtic, Virgil.

Reading the blog tonight I think we are agreed the standard of both broadcast and print media commentary and analysis is dreadful. Whether it be supposedly professional commentators such as Pearce, Parry or that git who does the CL on ITV or the pundits – especially those on what was called Terrestrial telly and on ESPN – is as my nephew texted me to say an embarrassment. The print media is garbage and in Scotland it has played an active part in the distortion and decline of our game. Football actually is a wonderful sport – the great players as mentioned on an earlier article have enriched my life in a way comparable with my favourite musicians, writers and actors have. On this and other football sites and in the fanzines of the 80s and 90s there are people who write/ wrote better than every single professional writer. On this site Paul 67, Auldheid and Brogan, Rogan, Trevino and Hogan are so far ahead of their professional equivalents that comparisons are pointless .As is this rant.
Why do we put up with these cretins, mediocre underachievers on the field, people who have no insight to the game they no longer even seem to like far less understand who can hardly string a sentence together?

Just back from having a few pints whilst watching the finals of the World Theatrical Falling Down Championships. The Italian Team really nailed for me but at the end the judges seemed to give it to the Brazilians, going by the hugging and kissing anyway.
In other news that was a shocking game of football.

It’s no big deal to anybody else, but it is a big deal to me.
Shouldn’t have mentioned my scarf anyway – it’s annoying me.
Apologies.
16 Roads, I know mate. When I was 20 the 19yr old lassie I was then dating knitted me the most beautiful Green & White scarf you ever saw. I loved it but subsequently lost it on a drunken odyssey. Still think about it 45 years later. Ah well, by the way the wee lassie who knit it has just gone off to bed. Maybe I’ll ask her in the morning if she’d consider knitting me a replacement one or maybe I’ll still stay quiet about losing the original one.
Ok…who stole the stole?

I was in the Lake District last weekend and sat in a beer garden overlooking a river while I watched a swift for about 30 mins. Couldn’t believe the speed and how quickly it could change direction. Amazing. Was surprised to see it over a river though…?

CELTIC have agreed a Scottish record £12.5 million transfer fee with Southampton for Victor Wanyama.
The midfielder flew to England yesterday to talk over personal terms with the Barclays Premier League club who finished 14th last season under new manager Mauricio Pochettino.
If a deal can be struck then Celtic are in line to make a £10m profit on the Kenyan international who they signed from the Belgian club Beerschot two years ago for just £900,000.
Beerschot are understood to be due a percentage of any fee accrued by Celtic as part of a sell-on clause written into his contract.
The fee agreed between Celtic and Southampton would be the highest ever involving a Scottish club, beating the £12m Rangers paid for Tore Andre Flo in 2000. The previous highest transfer fee paid to a Scottish club was the £9.5m Spartak Moscow shelled out to sign Aiden McGeady from Celtic in 2010.
Wanyama, 21, had an outstanding season with Celtic, helping Neil Lennon’s side to a league and Scottish Cup double and a place in the last 16 of the Champions League.
Lennon will now hope some of the money comes his way to further strengthen his squad, although he has already spent around £4m on Portuguese striker Amido Balde and Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk.
The Celtic manager has been credited with an interest in Wolves striker Kevin Doyle and free agent James McFadden.

I have to admire the tolerance of this CELTIC site in the way that it tolerates people who fly in the face of everything our club’s ethos stands for.
We really are an all embracing community.
Don’t let these self-obsessed clowns influence our great site.
