van Dijk signs four year deal

1571

Absolutely delighted at the arrival of Dutch under-21 international central defender, Virgil van Dijk, on a four year deal.  A central defender was one of three priorities for this summer and we have secured our first choice target.

The signing will also give a boost to the squad, and a timely reminder to all that amidst talk of player potentially leaving ‘at the right price’, the Celtic Story is one of progress.

Celtic had the tallest team in the Champions League last season.  They were also top scorers from headed goals in the competition until Bayern Munich caught them in the semi-finals.  With the addition of two 6’4” players (van Dijk and Balde) we look to be consolidating our strengths.

Welcome to Celtic, Virgil.

    The board talk…….

    Growing up in the east end during the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, holds many fantastic memories of Celtic and the odd disappointment (Milan 1970!).

    Back in those days as a youngster, we left the talk of the board etc to the grown ups…..

    Yes, if you look hard enough you’ll find good and bad in most things.

    It is what it is, is part of who we are, our unbroken history, and a lesson well learned……

    Bring on the 150 celebrations…… and lets hope we are still around to enjoy them….

    looking forward….

    I disagree. As we dont tend to get to the last 16 every year.

    6 games against CL opposition compared to 38 in the EPL plus the FA cup. Thats far more worldwide coverage in my book.

    Bit disappointed if Celtic have set the line at £10-12m for Vic (unless there is also a big sell on clause, although that won’t work unless he goes to a diddier team and moves again)..Think the line should have been £15m as a minimum.

  10. The Honest Cover-up on

    Wanyama will be a big loss for us, especially if we reach champions league. The time to cash in is now though if we get £12m plus. Talk of keeping him another year ignores the fact he will be a year closer to his contract ending and a few months away from being able to talk to other clubs, which will see his value fall.

    The worst case scenario is keeping him, failing to reach CL then being stuck with an unhappy player, bored and stunted in SPL and losing his way. I know Victor is clearly a class above Kayal and Izzy but he is also young enough to lose his way if circumstances are against him. I remember a game against St Johnstone at CP in May where Victor was incredibly sloppy and lethargic. His passing was all over the place. I think it’s becoming clear he wants to develop his career elsewhere and that’s fair enough. Keeping him here against his career in the hope of developing him further and selling him for more is folly in my view.

    Almost every club in Europe moves on their top players and replaces them. We are lucky to have great scouts to keep most of us relaxed about replacing ours.

    HH

    When you see what is happening to other SPL clubs in our economic climate ,Celtic have chartered a very good course thus far and I think our scouting and moving on of players as a revenue stream in the current environment is crucial .

    We cannot escape our football boundaries at the moment so very tough decisions need to be made and not only by our club .

    Other revenue streams are being squeezed and looking to the supporters to make up that shortfall is neither fair or realistic ,in fact one could argue the scouting and moving on of players could have led to this years £100 saving for fans and may lead to more affordable prices in the future .

    As JS said “football is nothing without the fans ” .

    Realistically we scrape into last 16 and get a group winner with home leg first.

    3rd place gets you seeded in the europa league so maybe a couple or more rounds for our players to develop.

    Victor Wanyama ‘staying at Celtic’

    Published: 25 April 2013

    Celtic star Victor Wanyama. Picture: SNS

    By LISA GRAY

    VICTOR Wanyama has told Celtic fans he intends to remain with the Scottish champions next season and help them claim a domestic treble.

    The Kenyan, 21, has enjoyed a superb campaign at Parkhead, leading to him being linked with a number of Barclays Premier League sides.

    His impressive form has resulted in speculation that a bidding war could take place for his signature in the summer.

    But Wanyama has handed Celtic a boost by stating he wants to remain in the east end of Glasgow. The midfielder said: “I’m happy here and I love it here at Celtic so I’ll be here next season.

    “I still have a contract with Celtic and I’m happy at the club so I think I’ll still be here.

    “We want to do better than this season so if we can get the treble next season, it will be a very good achievement for me.

    “That’s my dream for next season. Also, playing in the Champions League again.”

    Manager Neil Lennon slapped a £25 million price tag on the player’s head in October and Wanyama smiled: “What the manager says is his opinion so if he thinks I’m worth that, it’s fine with me.”

  16. Ernie,

    We’ll have to agree to disagree about that. The Kellys and Whites almost destroyed Celtic. We prospered in spite of them. I remember the 50s and early 60s only too well. We wasted a lot of great players.

    This is not CANAMALAR’s original post on the subject,but I am pretty sure it is the first draft of his question.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    We the undersigned have concerns we would like addressed by our board being the legal representatives and responsible to protect our interests.
    Recent information made public has raised concerns about the integrity of the governance of the market in which we operate, specifically on the qualification and issuance of license to
    practice.
    Serious questions have been raised on the administration of the rules, fundamental to the integrity of the sports governance.
    We would like responses to the following questions
    1. Are our representatives/board aware of any irregularities, and what steps have you taken to protect/recover the interests of the minority shareholders?
    2. Have our representatives/board raised any concerns and what was the response ?
    3. Are our representatives/board satisfied with said response ?
    4. What is the boards strategy to recover earnings lost through governance irregularities ?
    5. If there is no strategy to recover lost earnings from the offenders will the decision makers be compensating the minority shareholders from their own holdings, if not why not ?
    6. If the decision makers are considering such compensation how will this be calculated?
  18. Normanstreet49
    I think our current off field operation is now top drawer. We can look forward to continuing success on the park. Its healthy, however, for there to be open debate and criticism, and even some cynicism, to prevent complacency.
    We won the big cup in 1967 against all the odds. Its my dream that we do it again. Are the odds greater now? I don’t think so. Walk on with hope in your heart. HH
  19. So we play int the 2nd, 3rd and Play Off rounds.
    If we get beat in the 3rd or the Play Off rounds, we go into the EL.
    Go out in the 3rd and it’s into the last KO round before the group stage of the EL.
    Go out in the Play Off round and it’s into a group in the EL.
    Go out of the CL group stage in 3rd place and it’s into the last 32 teams KO stage after the group stage.
    Count us in: 750 shares for me and 250 for my son. I will email you details (have to sort out a minor technical issue with Computershare first).
    May I second A Stor’s very sensible suggestion of focusing on 1 major issue rather than a raft of questions. His proposal seemed, to me a pragmatic way to proceed. This is a positive step and has my full and unequivocal backing. It is time for deeds.
    Friesdorfer,
    I originally really liked A Stor’s idea, but when I put my head into rebuffing it, I found it very easy to dismiss with a smug dismissive response, I dont want to give that opportunity.
    The questions which are currently out there for everyone to comment on are already evolving, remember they need to be issued 6 weeks prior to the AGM so the board will have 6 weeks to decide how to answer them or even if they want to answer them, as I’ve been advised by a few that there are many stalling practices that can be used to kill this off.
    As I said theres a wee bit time to get it right and that is the main target, get something bullet proof we can agree on and issue, the response to the issue will be very significant and will tell us a lot of what we want to know.
    Cheers for the support
    yes the plc has not always been rosie and have made many a mistake, but overall we are in a far better place than was the case before Fergus.
    ‘overall’?
    That’s an understatement.
    We were goners before Fergus arrived, buried by a self-serving collection of weak-minded liars, fraudsters and egotists who had sucked the club dry and believed the support nothing more than a cash-cow, beneath them and worthy only of contempt.
    I meant to add that the difference between the European Cup 0f 66/67 and future Champions League things is perfectly illustrated by the fact that Linfield reached the Quarter finals in 67 . They got there by beating Aris and Vallerenga.
  25. Snake Plissken on
    If there is any truth that Liverpool want Vic and will pay what Southampton were willing to the reality is don’t sell until after the first qualifiers.
    Liverpool are not in the CL and don’t take the Europa League seriously so being cup tied isn’t important as it isn’t to no marks like Southampton or Cardiff (give me strength).
    Don’t sell until after we know where we are.
    Those players are under contract and are not so far attracting offers from clubs worth moving to from a players point of view and if Wanyama has rejected Southampton that tells you all you need to know.
    Those two in the team increases our chances of getting in to the Group stages. If we fail they can go and we’ll get the money to make up the loss, if not we’re in the CL and we can sell anyway to those kinds of clubs either not in Europe or in the Europa league which isn’t taken seriously.
    Getting through the first 4 games is the single most important thing coming up for Celtic and we need to get through to make sure we get some kind of European football.
    Lose this qualifier and we’re out. It’s that cut and dried.
    For Hooper scoring goals in those games might get him a better club.
    For Victor it showcases him for a better move.
    It’s win win for everyone.
    Imagine we qualify and then sell and then buy replacements with the carrot of a group stage to entice those replacements.
  26. Row Z
    I think you have hit a nail on a head there. I believe you have unmasked Ernie Lynch as none other than Michael Kelly ex Provost and ex Board member of Celtic.
  27. BMCUW,
    currently on 23 with a few more to issue details
    Details needed are
    just names and addresses and the addresses have to match the addresses the shares are registered under. So if people have changed address but not informed Computershare they should give both addresses and then make sure they contact Computershare to change their address for next year. They can do that online as long as they have their shareholder registration number which will be on their original share certificate or on communications from Computershare.
    there’s a long way to go, we’ll just need to keep plugging away and hope to get there,
    the backing of 100 shareholders with £100 worth of shares it the minimum required, after that I would hope anyone who doesn’t have the required £100 worth would still give their backing, the more names the better IMO.
