Various gaps but central defence is strategically important

507

As the football operation at Celtic enjoys its first break since returning to training in June, focus at the club moves to recruitment.  Celtic have been busy renewing contracts throughout the first half of the season, the notable exceptions being Dedryck Boyata and Scott Brown, but reinforcements are needed ahead of the Champions League qualification games, if not the second half of the season.

The biggest area of concern is central defence.  Filip Benkovic will (probably) return to Leicester City in June, while Dedryck Boyata will hope to cash-in on last summer’s World Cup appearances before he produces too many like those at Ibrox on Saturday.  The Marvin Compper experiment was over before it began, while Jack Hendry has dropped to fifth choice and the fitness status of Jozo Simunovic has to be assessed on a minute-by-minute basis.

That leaves Kristoffer Ajer (20) as the only reliable option for a position that cost us dearly against AEK in August.

There is work to do elsewhere.  Right back needs strengthened, we are crucially short of headcount in the striker department and there’s a reasonable chance Scott Brown will move on this summer, but while moves are underway to cover some of these gaps, I would forgo all other positions to get central defence sorted out this month, despite the fact that right now it is the most settled of the positions discussed.

Meant to also add that Desmond met with Brendan and Lawwell for the two of them to sort out their differences over the shambles of the summer window.

Why would that be the case if the orders on spend were coming from Desmond?

    —————————————————————————————————————————————————-

My understanding was this meeting was prompted by the public spat between Lawwell and Rodgers which did not show the club up in a good light. Doesn’t mean Desmond doesn’t have his hand on the financial tiller at all times.

The next player in Scotland to get a red card should refuse to leave the field and tell the ref that he is just a bit silly sometimes.

  4. Morelos outcome as expected.

The huns need him so he was never going to be punished .

According to BBC Sport Scotland no action will be taken for his behaviour in Celtic game.

    Behaviour( noun )

    1) The way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially towards others.

    2) The way in which an animal or person behaves in response to a particular situation or stimulus.

So could/will BBC Scotland explain the conduct,or will they condemn the actions of this particular player whose behaviour was disgraceful towards fellow professionals? Then again they can take the easy option and agree with the SFA outcome. So I await BBC statement on the ‘behaviour’ of that player who has a Cheshire cat grin across his coupon.SFA shower of……

Ah! So, according to the BBC, Moorelos only “appeared” to kick Scott Brown in the nether regions and “seemed” to grab Christie in the same area. I can’t tell if they are in on the fix or if they are being extremely subversive.

    No, it doesn’t add up.

Why would Brendan and Lenny before him blame a guy for dithering and meddling in the transfer market if it has nothing to do with him (Lawwell)

And have no grudge against the guy who WAS to blame(Desmond).

However, let us say, hypothetically, that you are correct.

Communication over 100 years ago from one country to another was difficult and took time to get from A to B and back again.

Not so in the digital age.

It takes seconds, so snails pace, like centuries ago, isn’t relevant.

No, the transfers are down to our obscenely well rewarded CEO.

  10. be careful TIMHORTON – you are not allowed to agree with me. i am a troll and a h*n for pointing out that Lustg was finished years ago after Barrie wonderboy Mackay ripped him a new one in the semi.

  11. To win this title and have any chance of 10IAR, we need a team that can all but guarantee a 3 goal cushion in the vast majority of spl matches.

Why? Cos Only this will offset the honest mistakes a la the shinnie penalty, disallowed Celtic goals, etc.

At ibrox we fielded at team and offered a performance that could have seen us 3 or 4 down by half time.

As for the Morelos, lafferty and Naismith types, share the bookings across the defence and midfield to put these pr1cks in their wise. If we were any more passive we’d have ☮️on our tops!

  12. The same Beaton who sent off Boyata for fk all a few weeks ago.The statement says Beaton seen all the incidents, so no retrospective action can be taken, absolute shite.

  13. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    JimmynotPaul – thanks for correction.

Frankly – that is even worse and so transparent in its lack of integrity it defies belief.

If Beaton has seen incidents as suggested and deemed them not to be transgressions (did any result in even a free kick?) he simply HAS TO be disciplined.

Am not minded to impulsive responses but, if no action taken against this official, Celtic should formally, publicly and assertively complain.

There is a recent precedent – the going rate is £6,000 and we have all that money in the bank. :)

As anecdotal evidence perhaps Celtic could reference two matches four days apart in the autumn both refereed by Beaton.

In the first he witnessed three fouls (an all time low by the fouling team), while he was able to award 26 fouls against another team a few days later.

Care to guess the two opposing teams who ‘benefitted’ from these awards?

    Hail hail

  14. Will Celtic do anything about the assaults on our players? NO. they did nothing about cheated titles , 5-way agreement. and European license given this year. DD and PL don’t mind/ But will players union say anything? Yes they will say “kick fick out of Celtic!” for rest of season

  15. The tone was set after Gerrard said they had ‘not been getting decisions for years ‘ when he was here for a fortnight, red card at Pittodrie kicked out.A letter publicly calling out Collum, mainly his religion, not had one of their games since, and you get John Cheatins performance on Saturday, backed by today’s charade. They are laughing at us,but we will make a statement……won’t we?

I would prefer we changed the Huddle to a Hare Krishna type circle and we sprinkle the fields with daisies while chanting Give Peace a Chance.

Then our constant recycling of the football to the goalie would make sense.

    Passive is the new positive.

  17. I put my car in for an MOT recently.

Was told I required 2 new back tyres and advised two fron tyres would need replacing soon as they only have 1000 miles or so left in them.

I decided I would forgo replacing two back tyres and just replace the one and leave two front tyres in time.

After my attempt to get away with just one rear tyre replacement my car failed second MOT. So I had to replace 2nd rear tyre. Mechanic at garage advised (sarcastically) that I shouldn’t try to return in a years time on same two front tyre’s as I would be lucky not to have a blow out and kill myself and\or other road users first.

  18. Paul67 et al

So, Beaton included incidents likely to be subject to further scrutiny in his match reports rendering any post match investigation impossible. As such he decided, during the match, that Morelos had not breached, broken or infringed (other offences are available) any Laws of the Game. Not any! Not only did Beaton ignore the rules, he deliberately acted after the fact in a manner precluding any potential future decisions against Morelos. These are the actions of a professional cheat, which is what John Beaton is. A Professional Cheat.

Is the disciplining of a ref down entirely to the ruling body or can a club make a complaint? Would it have to be a private communication as making it public would be just like calling him “incompetent” in a post match interview.

Do you seriously believe the reported £9m. transfer fee for Edouard was not approved by Desmond?

Desmond is the guy who calls the shots at CP on all major financial transactions.

Lawwell is paid to do his bidding inside CP and also take the flak when things go pear-shaped.

Lawwell is only to happy to be his human shield for £1m. per year plus the odd wee bonus.

  23. Brendan called out Lawwell for his failings during the summer transfer window. Lawwell came out of the whole shambles smiling as CL exit coupled with Dembele sale allowed him to secure his beloved bonus. Result.

Now we have another transfer window to strengthen the team. Lustig is as others have said has been a significant weakness defensively for 2 seasons. Going to ground at the goal was stupidity and going off with a minor knock shows his head is elsewhere.

No striker for Ibrox summed up the shambles. Even in the darkest days of the old board we at least could field a striker.

The Ivory Coast project will make little impact in the next 6 months when the title will end to be won. I am pretty sure he is not Rodgers first choice—it has Lawwell written all over it.

The beancounter in Chief has taken upwards of £10M from the Celtic support. He probably has a couple of seasons left to milk the renumeration system.

Brendan will leave in the summer as Dermot did not back him and sided with Lawwell

  24. Right Celtic, get a letter away stating that Beaton does not offer our players protection and we refuse to have him anymore. It worked for Sevco they do not get the incompetent Coloumn.

In which other walk of life would you have “say a contractor” doing a shite job, but still employing him time after time.. Celtic grow a pair of haw maws and stand up for fair play but most importantly the paying public, your customers, the supporters.

Let’s get good quality players at say £6,7,8 million each x 4 and blow the opposition away.

That should be chicken feed to us.
