Watching Argentina took me back to Fir Park, 2005

1218

Teams can lose their competitive edge quickly.  The Celtic team of 2003-04 were imperious: 25 consecutive league wins, they beat every team in the country, home and away, on the bounce.  Larsson left, of course, but the following season’s problems were deeper than that.

Watching Argentina last night took me straight back to Fir Park, 2005.  A feted team, packed with reputation and talent, simply failed to compete.  Unable to match the industry of Iceland, or the ability of Croatia, they look like they want to return to the safety of club football immediately after the group stages.

Having great players is not enough if they are not sufficiently hungry, and keeping millionaires hungry for the SPFL is a challenge we will forever encounter.  On this front, we must do what we can.  Packed 60,000 seater stadiums help.  I’m sure open-top bus parades help even more.  These things create a sense of occasion and achievement, which is difficult to find elsewhere.

CQN Golf Annual Charity Open

This year’s CQN Open is set for Friday 29 June at the first class Aberdour Golf Club once again.  It is a day of sport, entertainment, Celtic chat and is always good fun.

We’ve the usual round up of all things Celtic by Paul67, and our very funny after dinner speaker is Willie Allan. Then musical entertainment from Scoogz, who you may have seen if you’ve been to Celtic Park entertainment nights. Plus all the usual prizes and charity fundraising, for the Petrov Foundation this year. Cost is £40 night only and £80 all day including golf. Please contact cqnopen2018@outlook.com if you’d like to attend this fun event.

  1. GOVAN X BHOY i reckon mcgergor and rogic could get between 10 and 15 goals each. Ncham also good for about 10 i reckon as would christie if last season was anything to go by. Out wide forrest, sinclair and morgan appear to have an eye for goals too.

Stu only managed double figures one season in 3, no great loss on current form, despite that still thing he is good player.

He like many celts struggled with injury last year, with any luck we will steer away from injuries and reep the rewards

Graeme Sinclair was our motm that famous night in the Olympic Stadium Amsterdam. Loved that Green with White pin stripe shirt we wore that night. Still got it 36 years later. Magic

DD, my mate and I were cycling up the Western Isles a couple of years ago and we arrived at a hostel in Benbecula one late and very wet afternoon. We had to phone for the guy to come and let us in and this fella arrived with a CR Smith strip from God knows when. When I commented on its longevity he appreciated his guest’s observation and assured me it was his favourite ever. Tee hee.

    Re Pompeii

I agree with earlier posters ,I liked Naples edginess so much that I had to tell the young couple of pickpockets following us to get to fek …a shrug of their Latino shoulders and they were off :O)

Stay on Amalfi coast if possible ,Pompeii is a must see like the Forum in Roma .

  5. THE EXILED TIM if we can get 3 quality players i would be delighted, far better idea tha signing the mcginns of the would

If you do a full cover bet, such as L/15 or in your case 63, it’s quite easy to work out your return.

    I know yours were 11/2,7/2,7/2 but say they were all 3/1. And a £1 L/15. Total stake,£15.

What you do on a full cover bet is

    Add 2 to the price.

    That means 3+2=5.

Times it for four bets,625. Take away 1, return of £624.

That, believe it or not,is how the bookie works it out. Plus two, take away one.

    So,£22.39

Indeed, certainly not a 17 goal midfield player last season. And certainly not a 17 goal Stuart Armstrong either.

That, honestly,is my point. He has been far too poor for far too many months. Three or four months after signing, and six months in 16-17.

That’s not nearly good enough. Sorry. That level of performance will not be missed.

Gutted Armstrong is leaving. Sad to see him go. A good Scottish player leaving is always a hard one to take. Having said that, we move upwards and onwards. Players come, players go. The good and the bad. But the badge endures. Too much revisionist sour-grapes from some people with no class slating him on social media. Including the Record’s own Chris Sutton….There’s no honour in chasing the filthy lucre when you’ve sold your soul to the devil big man. Hail Hail for the memories.

Hope you enjoyed Benbecula. I was up there last year. My grandmother comes from there and my mother in law comes from South Uist .Spent many a year up there in my younger days, The statues onthe street are something to behold and the lady of the isles is iconic.

  13. Hopefully next season we use set up in a 4-2-3-1 a 4-3-3 or a 4-4-2 to get the best out of the squad. Dont think 3 or 5 at the back is any use to us in the spfl.

Think we will lose boyata and dembele before the window closes too.

Caught your post earlier about Neymar and Celtic sites condemning ? His antics… anything about the wee genius Shaquiri diving then scoring, I found it surprising that you thought most Celtic sites wouldn’t be against Neymar jnr since he has put us to the sword and managed to wind our Broony up enough to see red which many have tried unsuccessfully

It’s all about opinions, but I would think most Celtic sites would be far from neutral :-)

  15. We suffered a catalogue of injuries last year including one to Stuart Armstrong which hampered our campaign especially in Europe. I agree with others that there is no point in trying to hang on to a player that obviously wishes to try pastures new.

My biggest concern is that SA was one of our players that would try and get beyond two banks of four and give us a different option. If the world cup has shown us anything, not that we need reminded, is that possession football is the new Catenaccio; teams move the ball around and wait until the opposition make a mistake. But fans are getting wise to it. Pretty passing in non threatening areas is just delaying the inevitable. At some point someone has to make the decision to go for it; have a shot, take on a man, throw in a cross but do something to try and effect the game. I always felt that SA would try and effect the game. I hope that we bring in someone with the same mentality. Good luck Stuart and thanks for the memories.

The last paragraph of your post is in very poor taste imo

*why, because I called out the impostor who has brought Scottish football to its knees, who tried his damnedest to put us out of the game and almost succeeded if it hadn’t been for a real business mhan fae Montreal via Croy.

He should be in handcuffs but for the protection afforded by an organisation that has kept Scotland in the dark ages.

For many many years Scottish football was looked upon as a breeding ground for the very best, at one time there was not a successful team south of the border that didn’t have a least one Scotsman in it, sadly not now, and he’s solely too blame.

I despise him and make no apologises for what I say about him or call him, as Alice Cooper once said “No More Mr Nice Guy”.

I think that Lewis Morgan will be our best signing in years. Two footed genius like Lubo in the making.

    ———

Bold prediction. From what I’ve seen of him he looks decent. Temperament seems ok as well.

  18. BillyBhoy: Timmy’s in Torreblanca or The John Lemon in Benalmadena recommended for any Celtic matches while you are over here. Both convenient for the Renfe rail line.

BMCUWP: Napoli? Mad place but brilliant. We stayed in the port area and it was lovely. Convenient for Pompeii as is Sorrento. Napoli is awash with pick pockets but as long as you are aware of it your sis will be fine.

I love rollercoasters and the best rollercoaster I’ve ever had was in the taxis in Napoli.

  19. !!Bada Bing!! on

D9- agree re SA, a guy who could change a game, running beyond MF and a change of pace to get at a back 4, and a hunskelper forever.

  20. That awkward moment when you punt a bit part, out of form player with one year left on his deal for £7m.

  21. Sorry to see Stuart go but 7 mill that’s brilliant I think Brendan knows the market value for players normally we would have sold for about 3 million

  22. !!Bada,

When you look at his goals he was a threat coming from the left or the right.

    Hunskelper indeed!

  23. !!Bada Bing!! on

D9- as Bhoys are saying, we are getting decent money , if he went from Hearts it would be £2.5m. A marker down for sales hopefully HH

  26. Reading Steinbeck’s east of eden. Fantastic storytelling. One short but notable chapter finished with this…

In uncertainty I am certain that underneath their topmost layers of frailty men want to be good and want to be loved. Indeed, most of their vices are attempted shortcuts to love…We have only one story. All novels, all poetry, are built on the neverending contest in ourselves of good and evil. And it occurs to me that evil must constantly respawn, while good, while virtue is immortal. Vice has always a new fresh young face, while virtue is venerable as nothing else in the world is.

It is very disappointing when such a Strong player leaves when Celtic are doing so well, especially as he is Scottish.

His head was not in it doing a 1 year contract IMO.
