Watching Argentina took me back to Fir Park, 2005

1218

Teams can lose their competitive edge quickly.  The Celtic team of 2003-04 were imperious: 25 consecutive league wins, they beat every team in the country, home and away, on the bounce.  Larsson left, of course, but the following season’s problems were deeper than that.

Watching Argentina last night took me straight back to Fir Park, 2005.  A feted team, packed with reputation and talent, simply failed to compete.  Unable to match the industry of Iceland, or the ability of Croatia, they look like they want to return to the safety of club football immediately after the group stages.

Having great players is not enough if they are not sufficiently hungry, and keeping millionaires hungry for the SPFL is a challenge we will forever encounter.  On this front, we must do what we can.  Packed 60,000 seater stadiums help.  I’m sure open-top bus parades help even more.  These things create a sense of occasion and achievement, which is difficult to find elsewhere.

CQN Golf Annual Charity Open

This year’s CQN Open is set for Friday 29 June at the first class Aberdour Golf Club once again.  It is a day of sport, entertainment, Celtic chat and is always good fun.

We’ve the usual round up of all things Celtic by Paul67, and our very funny after dinner speaker is Willie Allan. Then musical entertainment from Scoogz, who you may have seen if you’ve been to Celtic Park entertainment nights. Plus all the usual prizes and charity fundraising, for the Petrov Foundation this year. Cost is £40 night only and £80 all day including golf. Please contact cqnopen2018@outlook.com if you’d like to attend this fun event.

Jimmynotpaul, i’m glad to hear you are well.

The Hippo loved it when Tommy and George were at Killie. He has never said to me but I get the feeling he regards Tommy & George in higher regard than Sally as both made a greater contribution to his club.

Former Killie captain Ray Montgomerie said , he thought Tommy and George were very good players but once he saw them in training and playing in matches, he realised they were even better than he thought.

  2. THE EXILED TIM we dont need a creative midfielder we need to be compact and hard as f*** to breakdown

I agree we need to be hard to break down, that is a given, but can’t see Brendan getting in another def middy when he has Broonie and Ollie, so I beg to differ and say we do need a quality creative midfielder, when you look at what we have just now, they have their moments but there is nobody in there with real quality, nobody who can and takes the game by the scruff of the neck.

  6. Jimmynotpaul…………interesting info about Shakira an excellent footballer. Why does everyone underestimate the Swiss always tricky opponents. Just heard on TV that Harry Kane. Is from Connemara stock – grandparents. He chose England what a pity.

  7. J.Mc.G imo would bring nothing to our team apart from a bit of dig ,we all know loads of folk who live and breath the hoops but this does not qualify you as a future player, we have better at the club just now not getting a game, he has found his level at hibs.

Despite my theory that we haven’t built from strength in the 50 years I’ve supported Celtic,I genuinely don’t think we need to replace SA.

AND that even takes into account the unbelievable stats provided by CELTICBYNUMBERS.

We have had him for about 40 months.

He was outstanding for the first four.

He was our star man from Nov-May in 16-17.

So,ten months, out of three and a half years. And more importantly, how do you replace him?

    Easy.

The same way we have replaced him when he wasn’t available.

Aye,great player. But he isn’t interested. Like Maloney.

I’ll take Callum every day of the year before Armstrong.

  10. Fantastic that Celtic have four players all first choice doing well for themselves in the World Cup. Brendan must be proud.

The Ajax in blue ripped us apart.

Graeme Sinclair was our motm that famous night in the Olympic Stadium Amsterdam. Loved that Green with White pin stripe shirt we wore that night. Still got it 36 years later. Magic

Bobby, I could never understand Tommy’s omission from the 1982 world cup squad.

81/82 was Tommy’s best season in my view. Friends of mine were at the Feyenord pre season tournament and Tommy won player of the tournament . My pals told me the games were played in sweltering conditions which Tommy adapted to , controlling the tempo of each match we played.

Possibly Jock thought Tommy was still the short tempered , impetuous , hot headed redhead he had signed and that’s why he never took him. Asa Hartford , who was a very good player but at the end of his career, was selected instead for his experience.

Interesting thoughts. I think we are light on the wings. We don’t know what we are going to get from Morgan and Sinclair and even Forrest could be unpredictable. French Eddy can play on the left as can Hayes, but I think we need someone to replace Roberts.

A new right back is a priority for me. Gamboa can go, Ralston out on loan with Lustig as back up to the new guy. Hendry as emergency back up.

Mine would be BOB DYLAN,as JAMES55 and a few others know only too well.

Mind I said about the Glam Rock Wars,a wee kid,I played Sweet and His Bobness to death.

    And Queen.

Got all of their 70s stuff on vinyl. Pish in the 80s,didnae bother.

Parents went to a do one night. A Freddie tribute act. Didnae know whether to throw up or walk out!

  15. I am sure Scott Sinclair could easily be in England’s WC squad if he had got his deserved chance when he was in brilliant form last season. Being ignored possibly affected his form

Here’s one for you, bud. Victoria last night,£4.20 for Fosters.

    Peroni.

Well, certainly better than a flat Fosters.

    Next pint,£5.80.

Frankly,I reckon I’d rather have a flat Fosters.

The happy clapper was me being facetious but as you say credit where credit is due as fans we just want the best…. but our CEO only does what Dermott his boss tells him too (like all of us at work) all of our managers and especially our current boss all praise our CEO…. but us fans, we are never happy :-) :-)

  20. Dissapointed to lose SA, 28 goals from 107 starts is a fantastic return for a midfielder,

We are overloaded with mid men but I don’t see anyone who will get 15+ per season there.

  21. THE EXILED TIM we cant afford the type of atacking midfield player who will help us get the victories we crave in the champions league but the collective determination if the whole team can and is more likely to see us will.

Would likely a Rightback, Centreback and Atacking mid in that order. However Would never complain about us sugning up qualifiers players.

  25. BIG JIMMY,Put on a Lucky 63,at 10 p ,£6 -30p bet,all at Ascot, first 3 beat, they are the ones that should win, last 3 win,11/2,7/2,7/2,which was good, because in the Bookies in Biggar, between the jumps and the dogs ,I lost a few quid, anyway what I get back will give me a few bets tomorrow, any ideas how much I will collect on them 3 winner’s , single bets I’m fine, these double and trebles ,I’m hopeless,

  26. BMCUP

No doubt it’s good money for a player with one year left but he’s the only box to box type player at the club,17 goals in the invincibles season was fantastic, I don’t see anyone similar there.

  27. If McGinn signs he will grow into a Celtic shirt as Broonie has done.

    And more quickly.

    Mark my words.

Who says we can’t afford one ?

There are 000s out there and only a few who we couldn’t afford, there will also be many available for free or a small fee, wages would be hefty but we have the cash for the right players, three quality players could transform us into a very decent team, three player who need not break the bank, three players who we would prob have to break our wages ceiling for but sometimes needs must, or we can just be happy winning the league in sectarianland and crossing our fingers and hope we get lucky and reach the groups of the CL and bank the cash.
