Watching Argentina took me back to Fir Park, 2005

1218

Teams can lose their competitive edge quickly.  The Celtic team of 2003-04 were imperious: 25 consecutive league wins, they beat every team in the country, home and away, on the bounce.  Larsson left, of course, but the following season’s problems were deeper than that.

Watching Argentina last night took me straight back to Fir Park, 2005.  A feted team, packed with reputation and talent, simply failed to compete.  Unable to match the industry of Iceland, or the ability of Croatia, they look like they want to return to the safety of club football immediately after the group stages.

Having great players is not enough if they are not sufficiently hungry, and keeping millionaires hungry for the SPFL is a challenge we will forever encounter.  On this front, we must do what we can.  Packed 60,000 seater stadiums help.  I’m sure open-top bus parades help even more.  These things create a sense of occasion and achievement, which is difficult to find elsewhere.

CQN Golf Annual Charity Open

This year’s CQN Open is set for Friday 29 June at the first class Aberdour Golf Club once again.  It is a day of sport, entertainment, Celtic chat and is always good fun.

After the golf, we head up the road to the CQN friendly Woodside Hotel for our evening meal. We’ve the usual round up of all things Celtic by Paul67, and our very funny after dinner speaker is Willie Allan. Then musical entertainment from Scoogz, who you may have seen if you’ve been to Celtic Park entertainment nights. Plus all the usual prizes and charity fundraising, for the Petrov Foundation this year. Cost is £40 night only and £80 all day including golf. Please contact cqnopen2018@outlook.com if you’d like to attend this fun event.

Congrats to your adopted country. Wish I’d chucked a score on it.

Switzerland have been better in the second half but how in the name of the wee man were Serbia not awarded a penalty when the horrible Lichsteiner ( or Lichtensteiner according to Phil Neville on radio 5 ) and one of his team mates both were all over Mitrovic then no VAR referral.

They deserved it on their second half performance, amazing that in the 18 years I’ve been here their FA has totally transformed their national team.

Okay it’s full of “secondos” and my barber calls them Albania B.)) But they really did a good job building up their game.

When I came here all their players played in Switzerland apart from Hakan who last one season at PSG and Frei who was a few seasons in Germany.

Now their players all play in the top leagues and much as tho’ I resent the Swiss massively they did a great job with their football:)

Puts Scotland really to shame when you see it:((

Have been an original CQNer since start. Was fairly good natured and positive about Celtic and perceived problems on players and tactics. Recent years have seen a denigration by many posters due to the survival of ‘Rangers’. And a clique of CQNers seemed to create their own subset.

    ——

Good Evening Ron, hope you are well? I have also been an original CQNer or near enough from the start.

I agree on your point of zombie reincarnation, but I am interested to understand who you think have created their own subset and why you feel others are excluded?

I appreciate we all have different interests and views in life. Lots get involved in the predictor comps others in the golf, races days, horse betting, football betting, CQN 5s, FAC, CQN grey brigade etc (the list could go on), but I have never seen anyone specifically excluded from joining in any of these!

Your thoughts and feedback are appreciated?

  10. Good business for Armstrong that. Nothing worse than a player with one eye elsewhere. Thought he was poor last season. Good luck to him.

  11. Got to admit, couldn’t see what all the hoo haa about Armstrong was about, decent player but no World beater,I wish him the best of luck with his new club and thanks for giving us a go.

  12. DD/Lennyboy, whats the likelihood of John McGinn signing?? Hope SA leaving doesnt unsettle others

My Dad had lurked for years,as have my two season-ticket holding sisters. He decided to go for it,and asked me to get him a log-in.

His favourite pub in Kilwinning is The Cosy Corner. It was an easy decision for his moniker!

Mine was slightly more difficult. All of my mates in Kilwinning think my surname is Mick,my first name is Fenian. That’s how they store me on their phone!

Then I read THE biography of Bobby Murdoch. Easy decision after that.

Give your Dad a huge hug from me,please. They are who they are,but they are who WE are.

Gerry , you mentioned George McLuskey earlier and his winning goal in the 1980 cup final.

My best memories of George McLuskey , games I was at and in no particular order, his perfect hat trick in our 5 1 away win in a league cup section game in 1981, his goals in a 6 nil home game on 1/4/81 against Hearts where the Jungle sang April Fools at the Hearts players , his winning goal against Ajax and his two goals against St Mirren wen won the league in 1982.

George’s best ( my jacket is on) run in the first team was the 81/82 season ending up Scotland’s top scorer . He was the the top scorer in Scotland and was the only top scorer in the leagues of countries in the 1982 world cup who was not selected.

  27. So if the £7m wedge for SA is anywhere close to being correct, it will more than cover the Odsonne fee, by my reckoning we still have the £7m from the VvD transfer and a whean of spare from the CL sloshing around, get the finger oot Pedro, your sitting on the pedestal is long gone.

We need a proper defence and a quality playmaker for the CL, given we get there, I hope the gamble of hoarding the cash pays off again this year.

  28. Wouldn’t swap boyata or joso for that swiss CH . He wouldn’t

Improve our centre of defence. .

  29. Stu done a decent job in the hoops with one short period which was very productive indeed. 7 million is giood money for him given the contract situation.

If he goes we will be left with brown, ncham, mcgregor, bitton, koassia, rigic, christie, benyu and allan fighting to get into a 3 man central midfield. Even if we move allan and benyu on we still have plenty in there and done need mcginn.

All money available should be used to purchase a quality rightback and centreback.

I only saw the first leg. I have no idea how we got away with a 2-2 draw that night.

Olsen ripped Danny that night, and Big Roy was injured.

But.ripped or not,he stuck to his game. Laid on one of the goals too.

  31. I don’t think John McGinn is good enough. If he is bought as a replacement for SA it will be a mistake imo. I hope we go French.
