Watching Argentina took me back to Fir Park, 2005

1218

Teams can lose their competitive edge quickly.  The Celtic team of 2003-04 were imperious: 25 consecutive league wins, they beat every team in the country, home and away, on the bounce.  Larsson left, of course, but the following season’s problems were deeper than that.

Watching Argentina last night took me straight back to Fir Park, 2005.  A feted team, packed with reputation and talent, simply failed to compete.  Unable to match the industry of Iceland, or the ability of Croatia, they look like they want to return to the safety of club football immediately after the group stages.

Having great players is not enough if they are not sufficiently hungry, and keeping millionaires hungry for the SPFL is a challenge we will forever encounter.  On this front, we must do what we can.  Packed 60,000 seater stadiums help.  I’m sure open-top bus parades help even more.  These things create a sense of occasion and achievement, which is difficult to find elsewhere.

CQN Golf Annual Charity Open

This year’s CQN Open is set for Friday 29 June at the first class Aberdour Golf Club once again.  It is a day of sport, entertainment, Celtic chat and is always good fun.

After the golf, we head up the road to the CQN friendly Woodside Hotel for our evening meal. We’ve the usual round up of all things Celtic by Paul67, and our very funny after dinner speaker is Willie Allan. Then musical entertainment from Scoogz, who you may have seen if you’ve been to Celtic Park entertainment nights. Plus all the usual prizes and charity fundraising, for the Petrov Foundation this year. Cost is £40 night only and £80 all day including golf. Please contact cqnopen2018@outlook.com if you’d like to attend this fun event.

I know that you and yours are over the moon.

    So are we. Great news.

  2. What chances a Croatia v Serbia match up in the knock out rounds. They’d need to get Danny Dyer in to co-commentate that one!

Who is Joris Maunston? Surely no Judas?

I am well pissed off with him bringing Starry Plough’s family into a post and slagging a teenager. Are the mods aff oot tae Brighton Beach?

    Poor show

  4. armstrong shows a lack of ambition going to soufamtun.

ok, another fee in, more in the pot for the manager, if he wants it.

i will be happy not to hear that stoopid stuart armstrong song.

btw, was with a villa fan yesterday, told me john terry was the best performer at villa in years.

Aye, it would do for me, canny understand those who don’t want JT, if he helped to get us into the CL groups it would be well worth it.

With mucho respect to out CB’s, we have been blessed the past two seasons in qualifying, one of these times we will come unstuck, it’s no as if we can’t afford a bit of quality, and the likes of him would be wages only, a fair whack right enough but experience costs, I doubt Kolo was cheap for the year we had him.

I’m not hugely disappointed,as we don’t need to replace him.

    But…

CELTICBYNUMBERS stats show him to be a much better player than even I thought, and I was his biggest fan. His assists, etc, are quite outstanding.

On the other hand,42 months and only about 18 of them have been productive. Even in 16-17,he only played from November onwards

We certainly won’t be able to replace him for the money we get,but do we need to?

  7. Imo, we will lose one of our match winners if Stuart Armstrong goes. He has a drive that no one else replicates, in the current squad. I hope we get something like his true value.

Remember am a bit younger than you & Dallas :-) like I have said to him Danny sort of was just always there I totally appreciate him as a player and love the fact he is still there so totally understand your feelings towards him

Plus he more or less scored my first ever cup final winning goal with the help of George McCluskeys heel

1980….. is now nearly 40yrs ago

Ffs where does the time go :-)

Real intensity from this Serbia side. Switzerland are going to have to hang in and hope their fitness levels drop later in the game.

I read those stats and was also gobsmacked as I always thought his passing let him down, just goes tae show ye!

Good player I hope he does well and I can understand he wants to see how it goes in the best league in the country.

I hope we get decent money for him when you see what other bang average players are going for..

GFTB-cheers mate she’s getting there.Naymark is a stain on fitba, would hate him to be in the hoops

  18. My friends in Celtic

Stuart Armstrong set his marker down last year. The one year deal was only playing for time.

Its no surprise he’s off to a team like Southampton. Good luck and I’ll imagine he’ll remember fondly the best years of his football career

    Ching ching Celtic.

BMCUWP-thanks mate, she’s a long way to go but it’s going to be better than her last three years

My cousin lives in Birmingham. He has a box for clients at Villa Park and sees half their games. He flies home for our big games five or six times a season. He told me last season that he wished John Terry was playing for Celtic in the Champions League and not starring every match for Villa. Tony is ecstatic if we get John Terry. He says no more 12-1 aggregate embarrasing results if JT was in our defence this season.

Any worse than wee Neymar ?

All footballers are at it, the lot of them and all this shoite about them being role models if any parent lets their children have a footballer as a role model…. they should get the sack from their parental duties :-)

My big pal fae Chapelhall asked me the same question about a fortnight ago. Stays just up the road from me in Bicester. As Celtic daft as you,me,everyone else.

    How do we replace SA?

My thoughts are we don’t need to,we certainly couldn’t get a player of his quality for the money we will get. Top-loaded with midfielders.

Give him the deal he wants. Top-loaded or not,we aren’t top-loaded with his quality.

  23. Now that Armstrong looks like leaving hopefully we’ll get the McGinn deal done and dusted this week.

  24. That’s very quick and early in the transfer market if true about Stuart Armstrong, you’d be forgiven for thinking that we’d put off selling him for a year with an agreement to sell after his extension. Brendan is on record as saying as much with his comments that there would be no negotiations this time

    round.

Good money I’m sure for us from a very, very patchy injury hit short career .

Prefer my Celts with scruffy hair anyway and for £7M plus add ons according to Bada Bing,…guess what I’d drive him to the airport myself.

p.s. apologies to the posters last year who said ‘ he wasn’t committed’ when last season showed he clearly wasn’t.
