Teams can lose their competitive edge quickly. The Celtic team of 2003-04 were imperious: 25 consecutive league wins, they beat every team in the country, home and away, on the bounce. Larsson left, of course, but the following season’s problems were deeper than that.
Watching Argentina last night took me straight back to Fir Park, 2005. A feted team, packed with reputation and talent, simply failed to compete. Unable to match the industry of Iceland, or the ability of Croatia, they look like they want to return to the safety of club football immediately after the group stages.
Having great players is not enough if they are not sufficiently hungry, and keeping millionaires hungry for the SPFL is a challenge we will forever encounter. On this front, we must do what we can. Packed 60,000 seater stadiums help. I’m sure open-top bus parades help even more. These things create a sense of occasion and achievement, which is difficult to find elsewhere.
CQN Golf Annual Charity Open
This year’s CQN Open is set for Friday 29 June at the first class Aberdour Golf Club once again. It is a day of sport, entertainment, Celtic chat and is always good fun.
After the golf, we head up the road to the CQN friendly Woodside Hotel for our evening meal. We’ve the usual round up of all things Celtic by Paul67, and our very funny after dinner speaker is Willie Allan. Then musical entertainment from Scoogz, who you may have seen if you’ve been to Celtic Park entertainment nights. Plus all the usual prizes and charity fundraising, for the Petrov Foundation this year. Cost is £40 night only and £80 all day including golf. Please contact cqnopen2018@outlook.com if you’d like to attend this fun event.

BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS
I’m really interested to see what Brendan does now, as I said a few weeks ago if Stretch goes we can expect some middy coming in.
McGinn for instance, he’s no Stretch but do we stick him in with Broonie and stick Big Oli one further up the park??
Interesting tim-es
Great game Serbia V Toblerones
A waste of a good bloody song! Thanks Stuart:-)))
Not the first time ole Peter has bitten the hand off Southampton.
So Armstrong to Southampton and then McGinn to us!
Keep the Faith!
Hail Hail!
Does Peter get a Southampton bonus at the end of the season?
TALLYBHOY
I met ‘the Quiff’ at CQN 10/11 ( i think it was? ) right shifty looking geezer in real life
So He Was CSC
Best wishes SA. & his auld mhan had better hair than him…double loss :)
GENE
Just good friends
Delaneys
I have said for years that from time to time we need to get in experience with no sell on value, it’s all very well developing our own, buying in for cheap and hope to coin it in, it’s a great policy in the main, but not exclusivly, we need to get quality in to help the ones we are developing, like we did with Kolo last year.
If we don’t qualify cos of our defence, and it’s possible cos it’s something that needs to be settled and ours is far from that.
HH
£7 mil plus addons for Armstrong, good money but rather have seen him stay
Gene
Southampton are keeping us going if we don’t make the CL ….
Since I have been alive teams with a bigger budget (England) have and will cherry pick the players who want to go
Fairhill Bhoy
Apart from his running off the ball and beyond the play I will also miss Stuart Armstrong’s song the most, whit a waste
Armstrong used us.
Money was his motivation or he’d have stayed with us for CL football and winners medals.
As a Southampton player we may see him in Europe in the future.
Faliraki, Benidorm, Magaluf…………….who knows.
Good riddance.
Stretch didn’t play that much last season ,last year of contract. He wants away!£7mill?em let me think:-))
Bsr 7.53pm
The quiff was certainly the surprise guest at CQN10 didn’t meet him myself but my nephew loves his photo of him, Stuart & the big cup
PHILBHOY on 22ND JUNE 2018 7:57 PM
He’s won multiple medals, he’s played CL and EL, he’s become an international. He wants a new challenge, what’s wrong with that. Hope he does well.
It seems people either liked Armstrong, didn’t like him, or could take or leave him. Put me in the final category but best wishes to him at Southampton and I hope we get an even better replacement.
STARRYPLOUGH
Ah,that’s the problem,bud I’ve said for years,decades,that Celtic don’t build from strength.
We’ve all seen it,going back to when you and I were kids.
Yet,I tried to explain to my sis that we didn’t need to do much this year,TR and EO should be fine. We could do with losing a few players who will never make the team.
We are very healthy in midfield and up-front,IMO. Where we struggle is cover at the back.
Dedryck wants to play for us,and I’m happy to see him there. Sometimes he cocks up,plenty do. And K Ajer, that’s a star in the making.
I’ll betcha a pound to a penny that Stevie Clarke wishes he had been on loan in 17 rather than 18.
The others are stealing money. And that’s not acceptable.
GFTB
Won’t make next week!
CP tour plus meal at the No 7 Restaurant that day.
Mibbe see you November!
Moreoreless was obviously better & 12m

Celtic
Medals won – check
CL games -check
Southampton
Silly money – check
Sorry my current favourite player is off to Southampton. My son and nephew told me there that Clydebank is buzzing tonight. Everyone saying that Bankie Celtic fanatic John McGinn is signing for his team Celtic.
Hope it is true. This bhoy will do it in Paradise. I have watched him play with my nephew for over 10 years. John McGinn always was motm at school level. Him and his family, live and breathe Celtic.
BADA BING
Fantastic money for us given he’s in the last year of his contract, and superb business by Celtic all round considering what we paid Dundee Utd.
Fair play also to Southampton for putting that money up front when they could have got him on a pre contract in January.
They made us an offer we couldn’t refuse CSC.
GFTB-he’s a bench warmer down south,a £7mill bench warmer!His choice,so fek him:-))
GARY67
I don’t think he will progress at Southampton. My opinion.
I know what he won and experienced at Celtic.
Mibbe he should have asked The Wall or the Spurs reserve midfielder, whatever his name is.
THEEXILEDTIM 755
Absolutely correct.
A solid defender,not a project.
As being reported McGinn will be around £2.5/3 plus Allan. Hibs also want Johnston on loan. Boyata’s Agent advising him he can get more elsewhere. Looking to bring in a RB and CH but no names. Scouted a young WHU Defender but no name.
Keep the Faith!
Hail Hail!
PHILBHOY on 22ND JUNE 2018 8:04 PM
As good as, if not better than, Steve Davis who went down there and was a success. As I said, hope he does well and the reported money for him is a lot more than I would have imagined for what was a squad player in the last year of his contract.
John mcginn is pish poor:-)))
I am not disputing we got good money, and if it is £7,000,000 it is good money.
IMO Southampton is no launch pad for the next step in your career.
Ask ex Celts who went there.
He’ll be back at Dundee Utd in 2 seasons.
FAIRHILLBHOY
Respectfully disagree. He will be playing for Arsenal or Spurs in 18 months,IMO.
IMHO
John McGinn … now ..a project…he isnt a replacement for SA. He is nowhere near SB current standard….but as I said if BR thinks…..
The rest is history
