Watching Argentina took me back to Fir Park, 2005

1218

Teams can lose their competitive edge quickly.  The Celtic team of 2003-04 were imperious: 25 consecutive league wins, they beat every team in the country, home and away, on the bounce.  Larsson left, of course, but the following season’s problems were deeper than that.

Watching Argentina last night took me straight back to Fir Park, 2005.  A feted team, packed with reputation and talent, simply failed to compete.  Unable to match the industry of Iceland, or the ability of Croatia, they look like they want to return to the safety of club football immediately after the group stages.

Having great players is not enough if they are not sufficiently hungry, and keeping millionaires hungry for the SPFL is a challenge we will forever encounter.  On this front, we must do what we can.  Packed 60,000 seater stadiums help.  I’m sure open-top bus parades help even more.  These things create a sense of occasion and achievement, which is difficult to find elsewhere.

Sorry to see Stuart leaving but not surprised. He’s at the age where it’s now or never for him. Good luck to him. Think he could do quite well down there, although I’m not sure if Mark Hughes would be the best manager for him.

Not sure about McGinn. Decent enough player, but not sure how he would fit in.

We normally play a 4-2-3-1 (or some variation of). In the cup final it was more like 3-2-4-1 which I like as it means you can get Rogic and McGregor in. And with Tierney pushing forward it allows McGregor to play more centrally where he can do more damage.

I don’t think Mcginn has the discipline to play in a two. He would work best in a three (4-3-3 or 3-5-2) which I don’t think really suits the other players we have, other than maybe in specific games or game situations.

Would make more sense to get someone more like Armstrong, who can make runs beyond the striker.

  3. Whether it’s McGinn, Morgan or Terry etc etc…Lets leave it to Brendan, he knows better than any of us, and he’s been paid handsomely to do his job.

  4. See IF the Bhoy Lewis Morgan ever becomes Skipper of Celtic…..will we Nickname him ..” RUMMY” ?…………CAPTAIN MORGAN ?

    just a thought.

    HH

  5. If Armstrong goes, we need someone who offers what he does: the ability to drive at defences. No one else we have really does this and I don’t see that as part of McGinn’s game.

  6. Our friends in the SMSM at it again.”Celtic to LOSE Armstrong to Southampton”.You just have to love their pain.

  7. Very difficult to compare players.Mc Gunn, (oh,Ffs) is no BROONY,or Armstrong, but I think over the course of a 60 odd game season,he would do a great job for us helping to deliver no.8Lennybhoy is talking half of the Armstrong fee,so it’s not a massive outlay.I would rather have him in our team, than playing against us.BROONY did say he was his hardest opponent.

What’s the story on John Terry?Just rumours or any updates on the rumours.

  8. J.Mc.G , its a big NO from me , nowhere good enough and never will be , we have far superior in the squad not getting a regular game as it is without another , imo Liam Henderson is a better player and looked what happened to him.

  9. At last, a right back rumour. Sam Byram, West Ham (ETims diary).

Would be a very good signing, watched him a lot when at Leeds.

  10. In the unfair financial world of football, part of our modus operandi is to buy/nurture players and sell on at a profit. That being so, maybe some should be a little more charitable towards Armstrong.

It gives us a certain sense of security re commitment when a player is also a supporter but In reality, any player not giving 100 per cent would not be in Brendan`s team.

Moussa`s at times languid style can make him look less than committed but I am sure that is not the case.

Quiff was/is a good player for us but midfield is an area where we can afford to lose him.I would have been more disappointed had the player leaving (?) been Rogic, McGregor or Ntcham.

Couldn’t agree more. Weans,coffee,all-day breakfasts, the ruin of many a decent howff.

A pub recently opened in Swindon, right across from the busiest pub in town,a Wetherspoons. New pub matched Wetherspoon on price, banned kids, only food available is crisps and nuts. And no coffee either.

Guess which one is the busier?

On top of that, its wall-to-wall sports tv. And the new home of The Swindon CSC.

    Great pint of Guinness anaw…

  12. Byram available for transfer at £3.5m apparently. Doable but wonder what wages he is on.

  13. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

Just had a text from my pet hun,who is originally from Dundee. Says that Armstrong to Southampton is another example of Celtic ruining a player.

    My reply?

We turned him into an medal-laden international who had five EPL teams fighting to pay him £3m or more a year. Wish they had ruined me!!!

  14. I had never heard of Sam Byram before today so had a look at West Ham supporters` comments and had a You Tube look. The West Ham fans were not too positive and neither am I. I do like his initials, though ! If he were to turn out like our current SB I would be more than happy !

  16. Stuart Armstrong has done what any one of us would do. Taken the opportunity to ply his trade elsewhere for more money. I am no accountant but I am sure that Celtic have made a healthy profit after wages, fees etc. Celtic have improved the guy considerably over the past few seasons and I have no doubt that he appreciates everything the club have done for him. I for one have enjoyed watching him play and develop and have no doubt that Celtic will always be close to his heart. Best of luck to the bhoy. We will have plenty of other Stuart Armstrongs over the coming seasons and I firmly believe that what we have is better as has Ben proven over the course of last season.

I totally agree and wouldn’t take my daughter or any kid into a pub, places that sell starter, main & deserts aren’t pubs in my eyes…

That’s why I leave her in Maggie Mays with her mum and nip into the Tollbooth for a quick pint when shopping in the toon :-)

  18. HOT SMOKED on 23RD JUNE 2018 10:07 AM

Never given a real chance at West Ham, like many good players who’ve went there in recent years.

He is a good attacking right full/wing back. Seen him many times at Leeds, would be a good signing IMO.

  19. Armstrong if his heart was fully in it could have been Celtic captain and the team built around him – but it wasn’t and he isn’t.

If we get good money and he wasn’t likely to sign a long term deal then it’s a great bit of business.

I’m not sure we need a replacement. We have Brown, Ntcham, Bitton, Kouassi and Ajer capable of playing the defensive/holding positions and the more central attacking midfield position(s) could fall to McGregor, Christie, Rogic, Morgan, Allan, Benyu or even Ntcham.

I’d envisage Christie making and impact and McGregor is just off a great season and of course there is the Ozzy with the magic feet so we’re well covered in the more advanced positions. The defensive and holding roles may need some extra cover but Armstrong’s position doesn’t need filled.

Also not sure on McGinn. Decent player but can’t see him fitting into the system.

Centre back and right back have to be the priority… after seeing Schar in the air against Serbia I am not convinced at all.

I agree with you. I saw Sam Byram play and star a few times for Leeds. He stuck out as a strong attacking fast right back. I have not seen him play any games for West Ham though.

  21. Interesting to read, given Lennybhoy mentioning us after a young West Ham defender, that Declan Rice may be available for transfer as he won’t sign a new contract. He was a first pick last season under Moyes, but Pelligrini has just signed a centre half from France and is after Masson of Swansea. Rice made his international debut for Ireland last season and looks like a future star.

  22. The Senegal national team have rejected an apology from Lord Sugar over a ‘racist’ tweet.

Business mogul Sugar caused uproar on social media when he compared the members of the Senegal squad to salesmen on a beach in Marbella.

In the tweet, Sugar referred to the players as ‘multi-tasking resourceful chaps’ – leading to replies of him being called a racist.

Ndongo Ndiaye, the sports advisor to Senegal president Macky Sal, says that Sugar’s apologies have been rejected.

He also says that they would like to see the BBC sack him from all television roles, which include being the face of The Apprentice.

    Good to hear that .

What is racist about Sugar`s remark?

Is calling players `hammer – throwers` also racist in that most hammer throwers are white?

  25. I read earlier somewhere that SA is on around c£15k per week at Celtic. That is buttons in the bigger picture nowadays of the footballing world.

Ten years ago I was earning £15k per year. I worked hard from the minute I went into work until I finished my shift.

Thanks. I have just read the article and can now see that it was racist.

Initially, I thought he was complimenting the players on being total footballers and used the Marbella beach Sellers as an example of hard working people who never give in ( I go to San Pedro regularly and have tremendous admiration for those guys trying to earn a living in a soul destroying occupation). I can see now that I was wrong.

  28. Good morning from Tesco, Forres. Not been on regularly due to being messed around big time by BT – naw no that one.

They were supposed to seamlessly transfer my broadband from Glasgow to Forres but have fecked-up big time. Seamless? More like the seams in BFDJ’s troosers. Anyhoos I will not be connected properly until Thursday. My youngest Bhoy is pissed off as his data has run out and mine has almost gone.

So looking forward to next Saturday’s CQN summer soiree. I’d like to go to the golf day but the logistics of travelling to Glasgow then the other side of Edinburgh, then Glasgow then back to Forres has put me off I’m afraid to say.
