We Shall Not Be Moved

674

Was it really almost 15 years since the only time Celtic beat reigning European champions?  A late goal from Scott McDonald in October 2007 was enough to secure a 2-1 win over Milan in the Champions League.  Two other Scottish clubs had already achieved this (Rangers and Dunfermline, both who beat the 1967 European champions), recording a mark the great Stein sides never did.

The reason I mention this to you is that in the days that followed we were glowing in our new European status.  Then we visited Fir Park.  It wasn’t even Motherwell we faced, it was Gretna, a team from 90 miles south of ML1 who did not have the facilities to compete in the top flight, so travelled the M74 for home games.

Gretna were leading until 85 minutes, when goals from Chris Killen and another late McDonald winner calmed our nerves.

We are now glowing at our great win and performance on Wednesday night.  ‘We shall not be moved’ from the top of the league is the claim.  I heard the same chant from Dingwall on Saturday when Newco took a 2-3 lead; chants don’t win points.  The next game is always the biggest one and for Celtic, the next two, both on the road, are crucially important.

Players are not machines, they cannot climb the mountain every time.  There will be an inevitable fall off in adrenalin at Fir Park.  There are 14 games remaining, seven away from home, every one a cup final in itself.  An acre of Lanarkshire is the stage for our next trophy.  Win and keep belief alive that not by the Hearts, the Hibs or the The Rangers, we shall not be moved!

I agree with the points you make on the relationship now between the Ibrox and Catholicism. As far as I can see these days, if you’re good enough, religion does not come into it – that is progress and we should accept it as fact.

The make up of the Ibrox support is a different matter. The Orange Order, Ulster Politics, hatred of Catholics and their Irish heritage, still plays out big-time in some – it casts a shadow and defines the whole fan-base. This is misleading & unfortunate. I have a good number of Rangers/Protestant friends through family & business who abhor being ‘tarred with same sectarian brush’ as the hard-core. We have a similar problem within a section of our support with an IRA & sectarian mind-set, but to a much lesser extent proportionally – “soon there will be no protestants at all” and the like, belted out by some tarnishes our wonderful support by association.

There is still a strong ethos among the c800k who identify as Catholic in Scotland, although I agree that many are ‘lapsed’ when it comes to church attendance. A Catholic education is still prized and Catholic schools in general set an exemplary standard. The overwhelming majority of the 800k, lapsed, or, otherwise, want this to continue.

Religious intolerance is not taught in Catholic schools, nor for that matter in non-denominational schools either. It is in the home where attitudes & prejudice are fostered & passed on. I have noticed a downward progression over the years, however this seems to have stalled in the last ten. I wonder why?

Members of my family were caught up in the aftermath of the Duke Street riot on Wednesday as the protagonists made their way back through the centre of Glasgow. Apparently many of them, estimated @150, were clad in a black para-military style garb and people were ducking into shops to get out of their path. My sister & brother-in-law who witnessed it at first-hand, were amazed at the lack of media coverage subsequently given to this provocative event.

It takes two to tango – the government and the media could, if they chose to do so, jointly bear down on sectarian behaviour in Scotland. The Scottish Administration are favoured with a compliant Scottish media who bend to their will, and turn a blind-eye when pressured – the Raith Rovers/Clyde fiasco being the latest example. There is just no appetite to tackle sectarianism and its poison in Scotland. If those on the receiving end were black,Chinese, Muslim, or Jewish; thank God that is not the case, there would RIGHTLY be an enormous outcry backed up by the media and a concerted effort by government to fix it quickly – no such urgency exists with sectarianism. Scotland is a small country – this is our shame!

  6. I can only wonder at what that CRETIN Kris Boyd would have said IF….

Celtic players ( or any other opposing players) had been DETERMINED to see how Ian Durrants leg would have ” Stood Up” to being ” TESTED” during a match, after Durrant had came back from THAT Serious Injury ?

I sincerely hope that Boyd is dragged over hot coals for his Hun comments on Calmac, but I suspect that Boyd will walk away scot free, such is The ” Hunnery” within Sky.

  7. Whereabouts in Duke Street did this stramash happen on Wednesday evening? I have only heard about it on CQN. Why? Government and media in cahoots to cover up Scotland’s shame? If so, things are only getting worse here. Very worrying.

  8. The Crown Bar is where the stramash took place. My understanding though, was it happened before the game not after, por cierto.

The RCP were always suspect. I’ve seen suggestions that their leader Frank Furedi might be some sort of CIA plant. If you look at his family background, the university he attended and his, and his acolytes, political machinations over the decades it’s not as outlandish an idea as you might think.

The club doesn’t employ anyone. It doesn’t have the legal capacity required to do so.

It’s the limited company that employs people. It has not been in existence for decades.

  15. It was just at the cross at the Louden Tav end.

We were walking up from Coias and about to cross the road when at least 200 black hooded onion bears charged at pretty well anyone who wasn’t one of them. Coming from all angles. They targeted a few specific obvious easy targets but were attacking small groups of Celtic fans around 5 or 6 of them usually picking on a few soft targets. It was pretty horrific actually. It lasted for about 5 minutes before the police arrived in numbers. There was video footage on the sun and mirror websites but it did not mention it was rangers supporters as perpetrators.

My French guests were pretty curious about it but totally loved the game and the outcome.

  16. Off to the egg chasing at Murrayfield today.

It will be a good occasion but as my Edinburgh friend said if Scotland could only bottle the support we witnessed on Wednesday up and take it on today then they would win by a mile.

Many impressed by Wednesday from all over the world. Not least the adidas main man who was in the main stand. Apparently he was blown away with it.

  17. Not sure if it has been mentioned but I will whisper it the Europa Conference League Final 2022 is on the 25th May.

  18. Where I live in Perth, Western Australia. Religion isn’t a thing, apart from the anti-muslim/terrorist bollucks, most people dont mind what you believe. If your religious you might get a ‘dearie me’ look but your thing, up to you.

My Mum and Dad Protestant/Catholic left Glasgow n the 70’s to get away from the sectarian strife. Apparently the last straw was when I came home from school my tie was cut off with an open razor and I was dumped in the ‘middens’. My father only agreed because he thought one night in the lockup would have disqualified him. lol. Australia in 1971 meant no more Celtic.

My family grew up Ozzie Atheist and Celtic. True blue, green and white as it were.

;0) 90% of my Scottish family, just blue and frankly mostly on the nose.

By the time my sisters kid came along, my niece was christened in the Chapel and that was it. First grandchild, no communion. Years later my nephew we didn’t bother. ozzie militant/atheist but a little bit Greener.

I remember when my nephew was about ten we were going to a wedding, a beautiful old chapel in Fremantle, magnificent building probably built by the convicts. Gothic, stained windows. A real ambiance and solminity in a creepy medieval, good way. Going in I noticed my nephew was nervous, sweating and visibly shaken.

As my Mother dipped her fingers in the Holy water, I laughed at my nephews face, he was horrified. he had never been in a church in his life and all he knew about churches he learnt from Buffy the Vampyre slayer. lol

My nephew me and his grandad put on our Celtic tops , get up in the middle of the night and watch The Mighty green and white Glasgow Celtic. When Celtic came to Perth my whole family, ozzie inlaws included all had Celtic tops and scarfs except some off the lhassis they wore those pink ones. Over twenty of us, mostly ozzies, all atheist. I have a photo of my sister with my one year old great-nephew in his little Celtic kit and beanie outside paradise on the Billy McNeill statue.

No idea what religion my great-nephew is or will or willnot become , that will be with our full support up to him.

Me, I Am a practising Bhuddist. bargirls to buddism but thats another story.

I love watching the Glasgow Celtic, no hyperbole . Even If i don’t really like soccer.

  19. Surprised with the relatively low number of arrests on Duke St, given the accounts being posted here.

Surely the police haven’t dropped the ball – again!

  20. I only saw 4 arrests reported.

The footage someone recorded online was more once the police arrived. By then the damage was done and many prepetrators ran off up the various side roads.

  23. I might be missing something, but what good do personal attacks on fellow posters on this blog achieve? These outbursts say everything about those initiating, and nothing about those on the receiving-end. I must admit to having a vested interest in this topic….as some will no doubt be aware

Of course there will be diverse views, what’s the point of a discussion forum if not?

Replies can be hard-hitting and explicit – views & opposing views laid out in detail, and plenty of room left for satire & humour. But posts used only to deliver targeted name-calling, cursing & words like scum, vermin & racist, should have no dominion on a site full of Celtic supporters.

As we move into a new year with our club looking good after an horrendous 20/21 season, CQN, without doubt the best and most accommodating Celtic blog bar none, should be a beacon of tolerance, respect and vigorous debate on all subject matter.

  25. Looking for some interest in the Sco v Eng rugby aka Calcutta Cup?

Each team over three tries @ 25/1 (#your odds on hills) is worth a pound ihmo. It’s a big ask and needs open play, or just two teams going for it. But definitely over valued bet imo.
