What did we learn last night?

902

So what did we learn last night?  For a start, when we need to, we can defend effectively and shut up shop, last night was our fourth clean sheet in Europe this season.  The 4-5-1 formation, deployed for the opening 65 minutes, was not effective at producing attacking opportunities, although this may be as much to do with personnel as formation.

Emilio Izaguirre was swamped every time the ball went near him, which did little to settle his confidence.  It was wise for Neil Lennon to hook him and drop Charlie Mulgew back.  I felt sorry for Miku, who looked like a player in an unfamiliar line-up.  He is not a lone target man but will do well when we get the ball to his feet. He was only asked to play that role due to injuries Hooper, Stokes and Samaras and will only do so again under similar circumstances. By contrast, Hooper looked the part once he came on. He bullied defenders as effectively as he does in the SPL, a real pleasing point for me.

Victor Wanyama needs to improve his sharpness to make the most of his composure and tackling ability at this level.  The perpetual motion of Champions League teams means a fraction of a second off-pace can compromise the defensive formation.

Did you notice how every time Commons got the ball he was thinking “goal”? His turn before crossing from the left belied the meagre money we paid for him. He is every inch a Champions League player.

James Forrest was played out of the game by the full back. He/Neil needed to find a resolution to this challenge but it didn’t happen. He tried to knock the ball round the outside and pass on the inside a couple of times, which was over-ambitions, to say the least. I don’t think we saw him drop the shoulder and take the player on with the ball, which is a pity, as I’m sure he had the taking of his marker. Both Forrest and Wanyama will be stronger on Match Day 2.

The first objective from our return to Champions League football was that we would be able to compete at this level.  That achieved, we can look forward to Moscow in 12 days time.

    Not really.

I had already admitted my suspicions (raised eyebrows) by adding “yet” to my reply. However, given the lack of any history of views extolling a complaints-free Scotland from TBB, I was also expressing uncertainty about what he meant by his post.

Neither this thread nor this page contain many complaints about Scotland so his post seemed to come out of left field and its meaning was, to me, difficult to discern.

For purposes of clarity, I will state again that while I am no SNP supporter, I have no great problem with independence. I do have a fear of control by the racial purity wing of Nationalism, a concern that Alex Salmond would share, and I have concerns that a view that one should be uncritical of one’s country is a wee bit, how can I put this, Sturm Und Drang lite.

I am sure TBB will clarify my misunderstanding soon

  16. joe millers shorts on

The polis were sitting looking at this banner and decided at the time not to take action.

I would suggest that it is unreasonable for the SFA now to take action, presumably they have been prompted into action by a orchestrated campaign of whataboutery.

My other thought is that the SFA want to be seen to be taking action against both sides. even if this is a stupid, humorless accusation against Celtic, it will offer the them something to cling to after a bad week.

I think he already has, but since you have engaged me while I am ‘sitting free in Sharkeys’ or as I prefer it SFIS, I note that you have said you have ‘no problem with independence’. Do you equally have ‘no problem’ with declaring your allegiance and fealty to ‘queen Elisabeth and all her heirs and successors’. Do you consider that it might just be possible that the SNP (with all their social policies) might actually schism and the real communitarian heart of Scotland see a socially responsible government elected.

I think a vote for the SNP is worth the gamble. I think a bit of trust, confidence and faith in our children would be the greatest investment any of us could give as a legacy to them.

In fairness SFTB, your initial, instinctive observation was spot on.

I was prompted to paste in onto the blog after hearing Jim Spence and James Traynor touch on the subject on BBC Radio Scotland earlier.

  22. E-mail sent to SFA :

    Dear Sir/madam,

I believe that the SFA are currently pursuing Scottish football clubs whose fans bring the game into disrepute by displaying offensive banners.

I would like to make a complaint about the supporters of The Rangers FC (Newco) and the banner depicted in the attached photograph. I find this banner extremely offensive and would like to know what action the SFA are prepared to take against The Rangers FC (Newco)?

Obviously the spelling leaves something to be desired but the sentiment stated on the banner is quite plain for all to see!

    Yours sincerely,

  23. Estadio

“Do you equally have ‘no problem’ with declaring your allegiance and fealty to ‘queen Elisabeth and all her heirs and successors’.”

Short answer – No, since I have never sworn so. It is not, in any case, the opposite position to rejecting Scottish Independence, merley a jibe at the default position it leaves us in i.e. sharing government with the Welsh, English, Orcadians, Shetlanders and the 6 county stateless.

Remarkable as it may seem, there are many of us who do not see it as crucial to be either Scots or Brits (or Neither). By choosing to live and work in Scotland I have declared as much allegiance as I can muster.

I will not be shutting up nor fecking off for all that that would bother anyone
