What did we learn last night?

902

So what did we learn last night?  For a start, when we need to, we can defend effectively and shut up shop, last night was our fourth clean sheet in Europe this season.  The 4-5-1 formation, deployed for the opening 65 minutes, was not effective at producing attacking opportunities, although this may be as much to do with personnel as formation.

Emilio Izaguirre was swamped every time the ball went near him, which did little to settle his confidence.  It was wise for Neil Lennon to hook him and drop Charlie Mulgew back.  I felt sorry for Miku, who looked like a player in an unfamiliar line-up.  He is not a lone target man but will do well when we get the ball to his feet. He was only asked to play that role due to injuries Hooper, Stokes and Samaras and will only do so again under similar circumstances. By contrast, Hooper looked the part once he came on. He bullied defenders as effectively as he does in the SPL, a real pleasing point for me.

Victor Wanyama needs to improve his sharpness to make the most of his composure and tackling ability at this level.  The perpetual motion of Champions League teams means a fraction of a second off-pace can compromise the defensive formation.

Did you notice how every time Commons got the ball he was thinking “goal”? His turn before crossing from the left belied the meagre money we paid for him. He is every inch a Champions League player.

James Forrest was played out of the game by the full back. He/Neil needed to find a resolution to this challenge but it didn’t happen. He tried to knock the ball round the outside and pass on the inside a couple of times, which was over-ambitions, to say the least. I don’t think we saw him drop the shoulder and take the player on with the ball, which is a pity, as I’m sure he had the taking of his marker. Both Forrest and Wanyama will be stronger on Match Day 2.

The first objective from our return to Champions League football was that we would be able to compete at this level.  That achieved, we can look forward to Moscow in 12 days time.

I agree with lots of what you are saying but Scott Brown was the boss of the midfield. Last nights performance would have wowed any watcher as the work he done off the ball was superhuman (and I’m sure he has not been modified lol). It is my opinion if he wasn’t playing last night we would have lost that game by at least 2 goals.

Benfica were superbly talented and their first touches, and even before they even touch the ball, can get them space our players can only dream of and for Scott and to a lesser extent (because he was nullified by the booking) Victor, to protect our back 4 like that was incredible. I gave us no chance at the Nou Camp before last night, I now give us a small chance of about 20% to get something there and that is good.

The schemer will come, at the moment we need to keep building the foundations.

    Estadio,

you never gave the “try to change it” as an option, it was simply “feck off”

So aye am serious, yer post was straight out the BNP manifesto.

People who hate this country have as much right to hate it as you have to recommend ethnic cleansing.

  4. I may get some pelters for this but I think the banner is out of order I mean the dogs on the street know that zombies do not stick there hands out the ground and have six fingers. If anything their fingers would fall off rotting and they would have less, not grow extra ones. I think the artist is wrong in his contemporary six fingered portrayal of modern day sun detesters.

I apologise if I have offended any six fingured zombies.

As a 3rd gen immigrant, the last few years have brought into stark relief this country’s views regarding us and the ‘fabric’ of society. From the demonisation of Neil in the press, match commanders referring Celtic to EUFA and even the most recent charge by the SFA regards the banner. The latter in the same week that a Stirling Albion secretary resigns for saying ‘hun’ while his report of violence and offensive singing is ignored. My wife is English so the ‘no racism here’ is dispelled fairly regularly.

In my family’s years in this country, we have fought and lost limbs in the war, helped build ships, even helped build the Clyde tunnel. We have brought employment and paid a lot of tax. Our thanks is potatoes thrown onto the pitch and ‘why don’t you go home’ without so much as a raised eyebrow of indignation within the press or our political leadership.

As has been said, it is time to stop whingeing and get out. Flights are booked for early next year. It’s time to do as my grandparents did and go in search of a better life for the next generation.

  6. The Hat,

Spot on. Until we learn to pass and move rather than get tore into them, we will not progress. I personally did not think Brown was particularly good., while I thought Wanyama lost concentration far too easily. I have said already that we resorted far too often to punting the ball up the park, because there was no one available to receive the ball. We have to learn pass and move and the refs have to promote football skill by ridding us of kick and blooter.

  7. shady

Hope your move works out for you.

I’ll be staying but my eyes are open to both the strengths and weaknesses in this country.

There are worse places to be but I still hope you find somewhere better that suits you and yours.

    TET,

naw its no, Estadio more or less just sang us the famine song, the original article by traynor was him dismissing complaints about the famine song and telling anyone who has a complaint about it what to do. Exactly as Estadio just did.

  9. Maybe we could swap places with the million people who have lived in Ireland for 500 years & still declare their hatred of all things Irish.

    Problem solved.

    Everybody wins.

  10. Looking at the newsnow headlines and it’s so obvious that the banner nonsense is purely an exercise in deflecting the growing impatience of sevco followers to us.

The timing is interesting to say the least.

Sevco humiliated in the ramsden cup. Celtic park hosting another memorable Euro night.

Were the sfa or msm responsible.

It really is a non story, but watch the usual suspects take their cue and use their influence to blow a two month old cobweb out of all proportion – we’ll be debating it for days instead of the consequences for Sally if the downward spiral continues. When is the Forres game anyway?

  11. SFTB

Alongside the sentiment in my post, there are the also the economic and weather factors. Recent events have been the final nail in the coffin. Can I say that, is it now offensive?

I’ve only recently started to recognise the similarity of my move to that of my grandparents. Maybe they had a premonition of ‘sunshine on Leith’ and took it too literally.

  12. shady

Best of luck with where you decide to go.

I gave it my best shot, and it wasn’t good enough, left many years ago.

Miss the football, miss the good people, but no regrets.

  13. So super Sally is the first manager to get knocked out of every competition available to scottish teams CL, EL, SC, LC and the ramsdens cup

  14. Do the SFA have any advisers, lawyers, I was going to say media relations department……….ahahahhahahahhahahahahahahahahaha

We definitely missed Sammi. I love the fact Sammi is turning into the essential cog, that man deserves every bit of praise that goes his way after he has stood by us more than we stood by him and that is from the dugout to the most ardent Celtic fan. Sammi will bring us joy on the road in the CL IMO. If not this season, definitely next season.

We need Real Men like Sammi and Scott who have taken all sorts of nonsense but realise this is the biggest and the best Club in the World.

Young James had a very tough shift against a strong LB. I agree with most that he should have been replaced and Tony brought on as they would not have known much about the big chap.

It’s like the longest, weirdest build up to Christmas. Excited and terrified all at once.

I was in Melbourne for the game last July and loved the fact that the kids could wear their Celtic tops around town all day with no fear of hassle. Reminded me of Dublin for the Pakkie Bonner testimonial. They even sold beer in the ground!
