What did we learn last night?

902

So what did we learn last night?  For a start, when we need to, we can defend effectively and shut up shop, last night was our fourth clean sheet in Europe this season.  The 4-5-1 formation, deployed for the opening 65 minutes, was not effective at producing attacking opportunities, although this may be as much to do with personnel as formation.

Emilio Izaguirre was swamped every time the ball went near him, which did little to settle his confidence.  It was wise for Neil Lennon to hook him and drop Charlie Mulgew back.  I felt sorry for Miku, who looked like a player in an unfamiliar line-up.  He is not a lone target man but will do well when we get the ball to his feet. He was only asked to play that role due to injuries Hooper, Stokes and Samaras and will only do so again under similar circumstances. By contrast, Hooper looked the part once he came on. He bullied defenders as effectively as he does in the SPL, a real pleasing point for me.

Victor Wanyama needs to improve his sharpness to make the most of his composure and tackling ability at this level.  The perpetual motion of Champions League teams means a fraction of a second off-pace can compromise the defensive formation.

Did you notice how every time Commons got the ball he was thinking “goal”? His turn before crossing from the left belied the meagre money we paid for him. He is every inch a Champions League player.

James Forrest was played out of the game by the full back. He/Neil needed to find a resolution to this challenge but it didn’t happen. He tried to knock the ball round the outside and pass on the inside a couple of times, which was over-ambitions, to say the least. I don’t think we saw him drop the shoulder and take the player on with the ball, which is a pity, as I’m sure he had the taking of his marker. Both Forrest and Wanyama will be stronger on Match Day 2.

The first objective from our return to Champions League football was that we would be able to compete at this level.  That achieved, we can look forward to Moscow in 12 days time.

You are right about Christmas. It just isn`t the same. They do the Christmas in July thing, but it just doesn`t work for me.

The main negative is the absence of family and friends, but the internet and Skype,in particular can compensate.

Perhaps you may consider setting that up for the oldies before you leave.

If you can`t find what you want in Oz,you are very hard to please.

    G`day,mate.

Caught the last 10 minutes on shoogly T.V. with dodgy connection.

I had more apprehension than anticipation about the game,so ,for me,the result was terrific.Lenny`s team? A work in progress ,with decent grounds for optimism.

China/Japan?Nasty stuff.Japanese interests in China trashed.Factories attacked, newly made cars wrecked.Probably orchestrated from central govt.sources and coincides with an apparent power vacuum between the last ” emperor ” and the future one.

The lid holding down the masses looks set to be blown off soon,so it`s nice to feed the populace some xenophobia.AND,the Chinese economy is entering a slowdown.

    Hopefully,saner minds will prevail.

I’m really looking forward to the Spartak game away, I definitely think we are good for 1 point, possibly 3 but Neil was hesitant to say it in the interview after the game on Wed as he mentioned our hoodoo, and it is only a hoodoo if you believe in that NONSENSE.

I feel Neil needs to play his cards closer to his chest, particularly in view of the ingrained antipathy of the Scottish media.

The B.B.C. report of the game was scathing of Celtic`s performance.Marvellous to see these clowns lurching further towards irrelevance.

Gallagher and Lyall (and Lennie )………..Heart on my Sleeve.

I think Neil is being majestic now, and has been toying with the Scottish MSM since he was secure in his position as the Boss. BBC and all MSM is nonsense, please stop taking any of their shit (apologies P67) as gospel. ;) They are nothing compared to the Fair Celtic media that is online and available to All to look at if they feel compelled to do so.

So, if I’ve got this correct we are to be hauled up for a banner displaying the regression of hun man to the state of a zombie and then the execution of the zombie?

    Is that it?

Celtic must fight this tooth and nail. This looks like another attempt to wheel out the “they’re both as bad as each other” myth and apply an unequal punishment on our club and support. This is similar to the peddaling of the story that a minor skirmish between a few fans at the freindly in Lincoln was on an equal par with the devastation wreaked on Manchester by the thousands strong and out of control hun masses.

Will we also be cited for the banner on display last night in the JS Stand statin “No Zombies in Europe”?

When did the word zombie become offensive?

So many questions, and regardless of the answers they are still zombies.

On last nights performance, and the whole experience. I thought it was pretty fantastic apart from affording the benfica keeper the opportunity to take the night off. K. Wilson was scary but rock like at the same time and the broon was back to doing what he does best, I though he was outstanding in the first half but slipped back to brilliant in the second.

JF should have been hooked in the first half, Izzy was a bombscare. What happened to his overlapping ala his first season? Has he been told by NFL he’s no longer allowed over the halfway line.

I cant wait till Barca arrive, hopefully we will have improved as team enough to give them a good “we’re not just here to make up the numbers” challenge.

Lastly, loved the small contingent of Benfica joining in with the first half rendition of YNWA, the whole ground was at one………………..well except ma wee bro who had to take his boy to the lavvy and missed it.

  10. It is impossible to dehumanize that which is no longer human, e.g. the undead, zombies etc.,.

It is also impossible to kill them….they tend to do that to themselves, the lack of brains meaning that they cannot recognize each other therefore there is a diminishing return on their pale and sorry existence.

    Just like the huns,then.

Oh….I forgot…they are immune…and zombies, too, apparently. Therefore there is no legislation in place to bring zombies to account. I see.

How wonderful it must be to be :

a sleekit immune zombie masonic hun.

And a rotten wee bluenose clype to round off an inestimable self regarding psyche.

Scotland : where zombies are protected by law.

    Beyond laughable.

  13. A Ceiler Gonof Rust on

miki67, as an avid follower of the brilliant but advert laden “the walking dead” I beg to differ in your breif sysnopsis of how zombies cannot be killed. The GB portrayal of a bullet to the head is in fact accurate.

However, a pick axe, pitchfork, spike, pole, pitchfork or even a sharpened sausage applied with sufficient force will deal a mortal blow to any normal zombie.

Having said that, we’re not talking about normal zombies. The zombies from the living dead original film to those portrayed in films and series’s today are far more intelligent than your average sevco supporter.

One would hope the old methods would still be effective.

Battons did not work in Manchester. That is recorded as a matter of history.

I’ve said we will pick up points on the road this season and I’m unperturbed about Forrest being double marked out of the game last night.

He wasn’t doubled up the whole game but he will have learned a lot from the night and he will KNOW he has MILES to go before he is a Top Celtic player. It’s all excellent last night, Great night for all Celts.

Petec, it’s easy to say relax we’re the only show in town. What does that mean?

As pointed out by others, and maybe in a tactless and humerous manner by myself, the club in govan and their reprehensible away support are committing the same sectarian offences week after week with impunity.

Meanwhile we are being cited for the displaying of a humerous (albeit, possibly misguided by the artistic use of crosshairs and a rilfe) banner.

This to me smacks of an attmept to portray us as equal and an attempt to retain the “old firm” tag which we’ve tried hard to disgard in recent years.

There is no old firm any more and CFC would do well to recognise it. As I said time to show the size of their baw’s.
