What did we learn last night?

902

So what did we learn last night?  For a start, when we need to, we can defend effectively and shut up shop, last night was our fourth clean sheet in Europe this season.  The 4-5-1 formation, deployed for the opening 65 minutes, was not effective at producing attacking opportunities, although this may be as much to do with personnel as formation.

Emilio Izaguirre was swamped every time the ball went near him, which did little to settle his confidence.  It was wise for Neil Lennon to hook him and drop Charlie Mulgew back.  I felt sorry for Miku, who looked like a player in an unfamiliar line-up.  He is not a lone target man but will do well when we get the ball to his feet. He was only asked to play that role due to injuries Hooper, Stokes and Samaras and will only do so again under similar circumstances. By contrast, Hooper looked the part once he came on. He bullied defenders as effectively as he does in the SPL, a real pleasing point for me.

Victor Wanyama needs to improve his sharpness to make the most of his composure and tackling ability at this level.  The perpetual motion of Champions League teams means a fraction of a second off-pace can compromise the defensive formation.

Did you notice how every time Commons got the ball he was thinking “goal”? His turn before crossing from the left belied the meagre money we paid for him. He is every inch a Champions League player.

James Forrest was played out of the game by the full back. He/Neil needed to find a resolution to this challenge but it didn’t happen. He tried to knock the ball round the outside and pass on the inside a couple of times, which was over-ambitions, to say the least. I don’t think we saw him drop the shoulder and take the player on with the ball, which is a pity, as I’m sure he had the taking of his marker. Both Forrest and Wanyama will be stronger on Match Day 2.

The first objective from our return to Champions League football was that we would be able to compete at this level.  That achieved, we can look forward to Moscow in 12 days time.

  1. I don’t usually read KevJungle’s haverings but his assertion that Keevins is a bigger supporter than our board caught my eye. There may be truth in that but Keevins quite obviously sold his soul a long long time ago to earn his coin. That just makes Keevin’s haverings even worse, imo.

I know that a lot of folk on here chortle at the myth’s parking of the bus.

But, didn’t the parking of the bus when, Barca of all teams, visited ibrokes

almost reduce Messi and co to tears ?

Boohooing about – anti football etc ?

I’ll tell you what… If Neil had to park the bus when Barca come to town and

we get a point just like the huns did, then I think that would be a magnificent result.

Morning all. Lots of Sunshine on Leith this morning. Enjoyed a stroll through Leith Links earlier taking my grandson to school. Never seen so many dogs in my life in a park or so many devil dugs in one place – is this an Embra phenomenon? I never knew they had so many dog lovers through here.

Enjoyed the Benfica game on Wednesday. Wonderful atmosphere. Fans played a blinder. Thought our young team coped well consideing we had only one experienced CL campaigner – Broonie- who was exceptional. I believe this team will be capable of putting more points on the board once Joe, Sammy and Biram are back. We haven’t yet seen the best of them and we don’t know yet what heights they are capable of acheiving.

The only criticism I would make is that too often our build up is too pedestrian. When we do move the ball at a quicker pace we cause panic in our opponents’ defence. We need to work on this to commit our oppnents more and take them out of their comfort zone.

    —–

Sure the absence of the zombies will have a cost to the rest but imo the state of economy will play a bigger role in attendances. A lot of folk with families have to juggle their finances these days.

I expect luxuries like going to the games and spending the best part of £50 for you and your kid just to get in or spending £500 on a season book will be taking a hit. So games like Celts v Hibs will not be a top priority if you are forced to choose because of limited resources.

If you are going to watch the football and have x amount of spare money to do it would you invest it in games like Celtic v Hibs or the CL package.

Celtic will do well because of the CL but there will be a downturn with SPL money there is nothing they can do about it until folk start getting more spare cash in their pockets.

As for the return of the zombies and the money they bring we just need to forget about them they are meaningless in a financial sense to us now

    That explains so much.

  17. SSB last night read out the Press Association report about the charges over the zombie banner.

    The report stated

”The banner in question is understood to have featured a gunman shooting a figure next to a gravestone with the Rangers badge on it, as supporters mocked the impending liquidation of the Ibrox club.

The banner featured a silhouetted gunman emblazoned with a green shamrock taking aim at a zombie-like figure in front of the tombstone.”

I’m not sure where the Press Association got their information from, but I’d lay odds it was from an SFA briefing.

The problem they have is that the information is wrong.

The silhouetted gunman was not emblazoned with a green shamrock.

If you enter the term ‘dawn of the dead gunman’ into google images, this is the first image you get.

    http://www.ukrecordshop.com/images/D/3072TS-DawnOfTheDead-gunman_1.jpg

It looks like Lunny and the SFA are going to have some explaining to do.

As someone stated yesterday – it’s just a matter of time before the Huns claim ‘Zombie’ is a sectarian term.

Meanwhile, we are still laughing at the bizarre world they have created.

  21. Part of Hateleys comment in the DR online today

“Too many of these players are going through the motions. They seem happy to call themselves Rangers players and wear the shirt and badge – but how many of them are prepared to contribute the blood, sweat and tears that have been spilled in the name of the club down the years?”

Right I have heard of shedding tears sweating buckets and spilling blood since when can you spill all three

Of course as a zombie you may well be able to achieve such spillings of bodily fluids and the rest like talking sh**ht and talking pi*h

    Morning,all.

The latest SFA charge has largely been done to death on here-we all know it’s a load of nonsense, but they do insist.

However, one thing which has been overlooked,IMO,is that it presents PL with a chance to redeem himself for his part in our fines from UEFA last season.

Go on,Pete-you know you want to!
