What did we learn last night?

902

So what did we learn last night?  For a start, when we need to, we can defend effectively and shut up shop, last night was our fourth clean sheet in Europe this season.  The 4-5-1 formation, deployed for the opening 65 minutes, was not effective at producing attacking opportunities, although this may be as much to do with personnel as formation.

Emilio Izaguirre was swamped every time the ball went near him, which did little to settle his confidence.  It was wise for Neil Lennon to hook him and drop Charlie Mulgew back.  I felt sorry for Miku, who looked like a player in an unfamiliar line-up.  He is not a lone target man but will do well when we get the ball to his feet. He was only asked to play that role due to injuries Hooper, Stokes and Samaras and will only do so again under similar circumstances. By contrast, Hooper looked the part once he came on. He bullied defenders as effectively as he does in the SPL, a real pleasing point for me.

Victor Wanyama needs to improve his sharpness to make the most of his composure and tackling ability at this level.  The perpetual motion of Champions League teams means a fraction of a second off-pace can compromise the defensive formation.

Did you notice how every time Commons got the ball he was thinking “goal”? His turn before crossing from the left belied the meagre money we paid for him. He is every inch a Champions League player.

James Forrest was played out of the game by the full back. He/Neil needed to find a resolution to this challenge but it didn’t happen. He tried to knock the ball round the outside and pass on the inside a couple of times, which was over-ambitions, to say the least. I don’t think we saw him drop the shoulder and take the player on with the ball, which is a pity, as I’m sure he had the taking of his marker. Both Forrest and Wanyama will be stronger on Match Day 2.

The first objective from our return to Champions League football was that we would be able to compete at this level.  That achieved, we can look forward to Moscow in 12 days time.

  1. Were you and I at the same game on Wednesday, Paul?

Wanyama was outstanding – I don’t agree with your criticism of him. MOTM for me by a mile. Commons is as slow as treacle. He has an eye for a pass (given time to think) and a very decent shot but he’s too slow and lost possession too often. As for “thinking goal” – that attempt from the half way line was borne of desperation – he said so himself – he was knackered. I certainly don’t see the same “every inch a champions league player” you do.

But it’s all about opinions. Overall I thought we did well to get a point and although the game wasn’t much of a spectacle, it beats getting pumped out the Ramsdens Cup.

Now that Charles Green has told us that Motherwell are one of the chosen few welcome at Ibrox. Im looking forward to the arrival of other SPL clubs at Ibrox (Cup draws permitting)

I do hope that our intrepid MSM when the mic is under Chucks jaw will ask him is this SPL team welcome…?

Over a period of at least 3 years we should get a clearer picture of who is welcome and who is not

I’d like to hear one good reason why the DR should not be hunted out of CP..Its blatantly obvious they are itching to start a war with us. The banner thing will get milked for a week now in order to sell copy to their currently demorilised customer. Meanwhile stories of pub battles, train staff assaults, sectarian singing, offensive banners and police reports go unreported.

Nice one. Didn’t realise rab Douglas was still playing this season. Always thought that he was a decent shot stopper, but limited elsewhere. when we went to penalties against Valencia, i remember 1 guy in the pub shouting:

“I cannae f—–n’ believe it – they’ve got the Spanish national goalkeeper, and we’ve got Rab Douglas fae Dundee….” over and over again.

I liked the guy a lot, and met a mate of his in London watching the killie game in April when we clinched the title. he said Rab is a motherwell fan, with a big soft spot for Celtic nowadays. Always thought he was a slightly weak link in an otherwise very good team, and MON obviously tried to rectify this with the use of Hedman, marshall and even Kharine. The difference when Boruc came in around 2005 was really tangible and immediate – and we saw what real quality we had all of a sudden. Will be good to see Rab back on Saturday – part of a great era for the Club, when we were ‘hard to beat’ no matter who we played.

As a footnote, many Amish believe that the Bible instructs men to stop shaving after marriage. The echo of the Amish is further reaching than they realise…

One of the great introductory paragraphs in recent journalism, courtesy of the BBC:

“A 47-year-old man has appeared before Perth Sheriff court accused of causing fear and alarm by being aggressive with a black pudding.”

We can only thank the Lord that he had no sliced sausage to hand.

    Not really so strange.

I remember being at Broomfield during the Seven Lean Years when Bobby Carrol one of the original Kelly Kids whose potential was squandered, had a black pudding thrown at him.

  16. I think old Chuck Green is not a daft man at all, with his stirring up of the Orcs, now telling them who will be accepted and who wont be accepted in to the sectarian dome? looks like he is getting them on his side, ready for a share issue.

When travelling to the game the other night, my big mate who is very outspoken in his hatred of the Zombies(mainly due to working in the building industry and having to listen to their sectarian bile) and he loves to take any opportunity to wind them up, said to a group of Orcs one lunch time last week “you are nothing but a tribute act, playing in smaller venues to smaller crowds”. Thought it was the best similie of their predicament to date, and still laughing now at how the Orcs took to it. Luckilly the big man can handle himself and none of the Orcs dare mess with him.

I think the main reason the DR is not banned from CP is actually there in your question.

They are itching to go to war with Celtic, don’t give them what they want, don’t go to war with them.

For some reason I don’t understand there are still Celtic supporters who buy and are influenced by the MSM(I don’t understand why either), and they still want to hear what the club has to say.

You only have to look at the 15k fall off in attendance at recent CP game

    v’s Hibs.

Then again, I think that Neil had a good momentum being built up at the start of the season, what with qualifying for the CL.

The continued cut-back in quality on the pitch will lead to more that the 15k fall off on attendance at the Hibs game. imo
