What happened to Martin O’Neill?

949

Football is a results business and Sunderland’s results have been rotten for months, so we shouldn’t be surprised that Martin O’Neill was dismissed as manager on Saturday.  But he is Martin O’Neill, who appeared to be able to walk on water when at Celtic.  What happened?

Martin’s teams played the same football at Sunderland as they did at Celtic and Leicester.  Direct and, if supported by excellent players, incredibly effective, but Martin was the antithesis of the tinkerer manager.  He had his plan and stuck to it, a fact which Alex McLeish successfully exploited.

Of all the recent dismissals in England his was least surprising.  Sunderland thought they were heading for relegation but still have a fighting chance, the right change could produce the short-term boost required.  As for our old pal Paulo, I’m in David Milliband’s camp. He and ‘Arry can go the same way.

  1. I don’t think we’ll be seeing much of Miku if quotes attributed to him have not been lost in translation. To paraphrase: the coaching staff are two-faced; NL trusts and plays the local players before him…etc

I suspect we tried to return him in January but Getafe like the arrangement too much.

That article is woeful. Why didn’t the writer just say that he believes Peter Lawwell is pulling the strings. That’s what he is implying.

Miku like other loanee or short term players has to earn his start. He doesn’t look that great although I would like to have seen him start 3 consecutive matches. Juninho suffered the same problem he didn’t play enough.

Always sad to see players voicing unhappiness in the press.

Miku may have some justification given some of the recent displays from our strikers.

MON’s football may be a bit flawed these days but for me he was the last SPL title winner who you could say played exciting and entertaining football, he was also a master at motivating players, things the current manager really struggles with.

Granted he had great players to pick from but relatively speaking our manager has far superior players to the SPL opposition yet plays dour un-imaginative football in what was thought to be an easier league this season, and still struggled.

Knock MON but he filled Celtic Park, Neil Lennon seems to be emptying it.

I don’t know why we brought Miku in, it’s like buying stuff in the Sales that you don’t really need!!

The boy was never going to accept being a bit part player and from what I saw he looked like he could do a job given a run, there’s no way to judge a player who doesn’t start consecutive games and also I think it’s a bit hard to chuck any fringe player in and say “Perform”

Clubs make a big deal about having cover in every department but it seems at bigger clubs it’s impossible to keep all the players happy..

Part of the problem is that LNS’s conclusion is nuts.

Rangers broke the rules for years and, as a result of that rule-breaking found a way of putting an extra £47 million it otherwise could not have afforded into its player budgets, but, by some sleight of Sandy Bryson’s hand, gained no sporting advantage.

As we know, and as he confirmed to Stuart Cosgrove on Saturday evening, the chief executive of the SPL believes that if a club spends more money than it can afford, it is automatically gaining a sporting advantage.

So of course February 28 should not be the end of the story. Legal fees are the least of it. People all over Scotland are utterly scunnered by the whole thing, including a lot of Celtic fans. It’s not just that we disagree with LNS. It’s not just that we cannot understand how the SFA can think it can get away with Sandy Bryson’s ‘huns on the head of a pin’ semantic yoga. We love this game and the masonic cabal and the nonentities who are supposed to run the game are turning our love to wormwood and gall.

For the nonentities, it’s just about money and making sure the gravy in the trough keeps flowing. For the others, it’s all about one club, it’s only ever been about one club and even when that club died they have either contrived to make it all about the new club that claims to be that club or it really is about trying to take us all down with them.

It’s always hard for a loan player if they don’t make an immediate impact. We really didn’t see enough of him. I take it the manager just didn’t fancy him after working with him because even in games when three subs were used he rarely featured.

  12. Top of the morning to you all from a grey, cold Fife.

Sevco may have a point if they were charged with gaining a sporting advantage as Nimmo Smith found them not guilty of that.

    What were they charged with?

If the SPL claimed that they had players who were not legaly/properly registered then they were found guilty of that.

In civil cases, costs follow the event. I.E. The loser pays the winner their legal and other costs.

    As for the tribunal’s costs?

I would be surprised if Lawwell didbn’t have cancellation rights. I reckon he was kept because we were still in CL after January. Otherwise he would have been punted back. I would have much rather seen Celtic spend the money we have paid Miku in wages on buying Russell from United or someone similar.

Loan deals don’t make much sense to me unless it is a star player out of favour at a club like Robbie Keane was and Bellamy.

if the spl and sevco are disputing £500,0000 court bill for the LNS report ?

where the QC trio found oldco guilty

never saw anywhere on report that newco would pay costs?

    as would be normal

still leaves the question of why the QC trio were allowed to decided the punishment for a football matter

when you look back at other minor registration mistakes and punishment set to clubs

oldco were fined…..but payment will never be met

Been offline since the game on Sunday but have since noticed a few comments about Kayal’s contribution. Now I think Kayal is a good player but hasn’t hit the heights he reached earlier with us, pre-injury. He has showed some signs recently of getting back to some kind of form. I watched him at the game (don’t get to many away ones) and I did notice one thing.

He had a habit of passing short to a teammate (nothing wrong there) and then instead of running into space for the return he ran behind a Saints player which meant he couldn’t receive the pass. More often than not he then gestured that he had wanted the return ball when it had already been moved on to another player. This cut down on the opportunities for the player with the ball and often our passing broke down. (the passing was crap – Ambrose ffs)

Now I don’t know if he was doing it on purpose or by accident but it happened quite a few times. Worth watching to see if he repeats it or if I just got it completely wrong.

He gave the impression of working hard but I wasn’t convinced. He was by no means the worst of the players though and this could be an unfair critique as I was watching him specifically.

He did other stuff that was pretty good but that part of his game was frustrating me.

There is a good player in there as we have seen but he would need to be braver when not in possession for me to have the impact he has threatened to have.

Claiming a 3rd division title as a 55th title is embarrassing. They shared one anyway. They always forget about that.

Clubs like Man U,Liverpool,Juve etc don’t include minor divisions amongst their totals.

Probably too embarrassed, but that is never a problem for that lot.

  29. They might not do embarrassment or walking away (more lies) but they do brass necks brilliantly.

A 12m debt to win a part-time league and at the same time experiencing some very embarrassing results, only they could spin that into a success.

  30. In my opinion, the MINIMUM requirement for any professional footballer is to give 100% effort in every game he plays. He may not always play well, but he should always work hard

This includes working hard to keep possession, working hard to regain possession, helping teammates by covering for them and making angles/runs to receive the ball from them, committing themselves in challenges etc etc.

If you were to analyse the Celtic team individually and collectively v St.Mirren, how many would pass this “acid test”?

Unfortunately, not many and even more unfortunately this is far from the first time this season.

Neil Lennon, whom I greatly admire, appears to agree with this but, most worryingly of all, does not appear to know what to do to change it.

I can forgive a player having a poor game, but find it difficult to do so for guys who do not give 100% effort.

Finding a solution to this is critical for NL and the club.
