What is tolerated in Scotland

250

Even when Celtic are no longer involved in a cup competition, I usually have a commercial concern for the tournament and the game in general.  If we are not at a final (and Newco seldom are), who will buy the all tickets?  Even Aberdeen could not sell their allocation of tickets against Celtic in recent finals.

In this respect, it is a good time for the Scottish Cup semis and final to be behind closed doors.  The SFA will lose no more money than if Celtic were there for a fifth successive triumph.

You have to feel for St Johnstone fans, already denied attendance at their second major trophy win, they could also miss their third.  They were dragged into a sectarian scandal when their players were abused at the behind closed doors quarterfinal.  Carried out on the SFA’s watch by staff permitted to be pitch side, how the Association deal with the matter will tell you lots about how our game/country/media is run.

If only the abuser was from a different club, or better still, if he was Czech, the frenzy would ensure such attitudes were not tolerated in Scotland in 2021.  But you know there are.  Feeling a bit less interested in the SFA’s financial well-being, to be honest.

The Kirk have acknowledged and apologised for their historic anti Irish Catholic racism.

    The SNP haven’t.

I read your post with interest. There has been open sectarian behaviour on our streets for over one hundred years, as you say. My parents, both from Govan, told us vivid stories of the Orange Order marching belligerently through the streets unchecked & chaperoned by the Glasgow Police, creating havoc, attacking people & churches.

Let’s go forward to the unlikely situation of an independent Scotland. What do you think the hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, who either practice, or, support this ‘cancer” that eats away at Scotland, will do? Will they simply melt away?

Isn’t more than likely that organisations such as the Orange Order & their vast number of ‘camp followers’ will look to underpin & protect their ‘culture’ by entering the political arena in Scotland, in the same way they do in Ulster. If they do, they will be much bigger fish in a smaller pool.

We are very much the minority in Scotland and abuse, similar to what went on at Ibrox, is viewed as ‘par for the course’ and conveniently ignored by the majority. We have ‘friends’ in the UK that easily outnumber the total population of Scotland. Why would we walk away from millions of these like-minded people to be totally isolated & surrounded in a bigoted little country?

Anyway nothing will happen as it’s been deemed in some quarters as being inaudible, now if the offender had covered his mouth. Different story.

  8. Struggled to hear the sectarian shout but if it did indeed come from the bench area then Bell would seem to be the odds on favourite.

McAllister a possible though I think that unlikely – many of his friends and acquaintances (including the large Liverpool FC catholic/Irish support) would be very offended.

Unless big Bomber or Goram were sitting on the bench as , of course, all you need to do that is a Hugh Jarse.

Yes, racism has its roots in economic relations and material conditions.

The endogenous anti Irish Catholic racism in Scotland, which is referred to in the article, is one such example.

  13. TT,

merely stating that it gets ignored all season long in the SPFL with mouthpieces at Ibrokes. The SFA as you quite rightly mention, because it’s their competition, should be looking into it. Both orgs. cut from the same cloth.

Maybe someone should send it to UEFA/FIFA, but as has been mentioned it will probably get the blinkers treatment too

  14. As someone pointed out earlier, it didn’t take Bayern long to appoint a new manager for next season. That’s a well-run club. Still, we’ve got a new marketing man (CEO).

Who would win in a fight between a nearly missed penalty and a perfectly taken penalty?

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Surely it depends on whether or not the perfectly taken penalty was saved, then again, if it was saved it wasn’t perfectly taken? Then again, a perfectly taken penalty could be perfectly saved, or could it?

    So the answer is…………..

If it was Rainjurz and it was scored it would be ‘the perfectly taken penalty’ I think they said on Sunday, – Jermain Defoe’s was the perfectly taken penalty. In my eyes however he very clearly, very near missed.

Henrik Larsson was regularly ” on the edge of offside ” in SMSM commentary, which is their way of saying he was onside.
