What’s it to you, Charlie?

The news yesterday that HMRC would appeal the decision by the First Tier Tribunal (FTT) to reject the part of their tax demand against former club Rangers which was still open to dispute was received by most with passing interest.  The FTT returned a split decision, with the minority view giving HMRC substantial grounds for an appeal, and as we have heard often in recent years, HMRC always pursue tax under various circumstances.  Reasons include when they believe wrongdoing has occurred.

As such, it seemed strange that The Rangers chief executive, Charles Green, issued a statement on the subject yesterday as the on-going tax dispute “will have no affect (sic.) on us”.  He also wrote “in the strongest possible terms to HMRC pointing out the futility of such an appeal”.

If Green expects HMRC to read this letter and to countenance a change of tact he has a regard for his own abilities which are, frankly, a little curious.  No mere mortal could write a letter and bring about any change in such a dispute, which leads us to another question, is Charles Green a mere mortal, or does his aim occasionally stretch beyond his reach?  I’m sure we’re not dealing with a Self-Certified-Superman.

The point to this exercise is that while Green’s newco is not liable for another company’s taxes, his football club inherited the SFA place vacated by Rangers, including pesky football liabilities.  Fifa and SFA rules on paying social taxes are clear – avoid them illegally and face disciplinary action.

As the matter is on-going, the football authorities have yet to issue any disciplinary action for the non-payment of taxes for the five players Rangers conceded to the FTT.  Should the courts ultimately decide in favour of HMRC for the balance of players still being disputed, a fresh wave of disciplinary measures would be due against Green’s club.

Last summer we discussed how the toxicity which was attached to the club Craig Whyte inherited, and then relinquished in a worse state, would make going forward as a Newco with any connection whatsoever to the SFA membership of Oldco very difficult.  Many, including the Blue Knights consortium, concluded it didn’t look viable.

It still doesn’t. Scottish football needs to consider how to deal with the long term consequences of these matters.

  1. BRTH,

Why you only writing a book on the Lions, I think you should write a History of the Celtic, I think many fans would treat it as the official tome of the hoops. Your writing has been one of the most outstanding of all fans in this country, I am sorry, the most outstanding by far in the modern media which is miles ahead of the old one. I recognize there were some outstanding sports journalists in the past but unfortunately of late they have gone but are not forgotten. You Sir should be commissioned to write a book about Celtic from three different angles. From the club, the players and the fans.

So get off of here and any other Celtic fan web site and get to work, you do not know your own talent, get to work.

  2. BRTH,

A Stunning read my friend.a wonderfully humane and, dare I say, Christian, approach to those afflicted by alcoholism.

    Truly inspirational.

Your vocation is not where you work today but in journalism.

I cannot think of a columnist in the national press, except Hugh McIlvanney, who could deliver a finer piece of prose.

  4. If the newco goes bust what is their likely route out of it? I can’t see one.

As Paul says the price for them having kept any kind of connection to Oldco was just way too high. They needed too many planets to align at the right time and it just didn’t happen.

At times I have thought it could be straightforward enough for them to ‘get big’ as a newco. But they have been complicit in their own downfall. They could have paid for good lower league players at top lower league wages but they chose to tempt journey men SPL players on top SPL wages. They could have built a squad year on year, but no.

It seems that even their home ground is a millstone around their neck. The costs associated with it and Murray Park are non-negotiable. Rates, policing, electricity, upkeep……..

    Goosed. Well and truly.

We really don’t have to worry about them again.

Thanks for that information, and for the continuing effort to get somewhere near the bottom of this murky and dank ‘arrangement’. The Huns really do seem to have slithered down into a dark, dark place.

Having hardly missed a Celtic game during their nine titles, this past year has been just exquisite. I remember seeing that prick Gough running up the park at Ibrox after they scored against us early in the season when they were going for 10-in-a-row throwing two open hands in the air to ram the 10-finger salute into us – thank God for Wim the Perm!

I hope there is much more, and much worse (better?), to come, and that the rest of the arrogant crew get theirs – I’m not interested in Whyte or Green, or even Sally, Souness or Uncle Walter – it is Murray that I want nailed nailed to the wall.

    Hail, Hail

    BGFC

I was at that game and remember that incident.

RBlinker pulled out of a 50/50 tackle on the left wing which then led to a cross from them from which he scored. It was late on in the game.

He then ran the length of the Govan Stand with the 10 fingers raised.

Everyone knew exactly what he meant by it.

    He has always denied it.

I saw it and I know exactly what he meant by it.

Can I just say a big “Thank you” for all the nice comments tonight. I appreciate them very much and I am glad that a wee piece of writing can attract such attention– but honestly the point was to highlight that there is always hope and that there are some truly remarkable people out there who are completely unsung heroes.

I have been fortunate– really fortunate to meet some people who you would not believe. If they were characters in a book you would not believe in them– they would be too unreal.

Some make you laugh, others make you cry. Still others yet make you mad, totally frustrated and annoyed– or inspire you to do things that you had never thought of before.

I enjoy writing and telling a story—– mind you I enjoy telling more than the odd story in a pub lol—- but honestly my point tonight in my wee piece was not about me or my writing, but about just how remarkable AA is as an organisation and how it sometimes brings out the best in people— the absolute best.

So thanks for the comments— but it is AA members and what they do who are worthy of great praise— oh and they tell some of the funniest stories I have ever heard!!!!

Just finishing Titanic Thompson— fascinating man though I suspect he was someone whom I would not have liked too much had I met him, but a good read none the less.

I still have the greatest game to go— and about two dozen others lol.

    Hope you are well.

Came home from night school and I read Brogans piece, listened to Neil Young track you posted and funny enough I was thinking about Danny Whitten tonight and all the people that are no longer in my life through drugs and alcohol and me I’m having a second or is that a third bite at the cherry, 360 days sober today, so yeah life is being good to me today, thank you for asking…

    Be well my friend..

  10. Brogan etc.

    Quality piece.

I can relate to what Gazza is going through, and I hope his time in rehab is fruitfull, but sad to say, I don’t think it will be.

Some people are not cut out to heal themselfs, and I fear he is one of them.

Time will tell, and I hope I am wrong.

  11. BRTH, sorry to bother you again but I think you should write the Celtic book I mentioned earlier, don’t want to go into details but there has not been a truly great Scottish sports writer for years, my father was friends with one of them. I do not know your age or personnel life but you have a natural talent as a writer and you should use it, and I think you should use it on your obvious passion. Sorry if I am being a pain.

Big month this month for the Hoops 7 games in all to play, the business end of the season is upon us..

  15. In light of brth’s piece, I ‘d like to say this: I’ve been clean and sober for 12 years now, and they’ve been the best 12 years of my life.

I am one of the lucky ones.

Fair play to all those who can indulge in a dram or a toke, socially.

For others it’s a dangerous game.

    Thanks again to brth.

I have really enjoyed this season so far, it’s had some downers, but it’s coming to crunch time.

If we only manage 2 out of 3 trophies, would you settle for the SPL title and Champions of Europe?

It’s a beautiful thought, so it is :-)

360 days is quite an accomplishment, well done mi amigo.

I am trying to cut down, and I will give up smoking next monday for the second time, so with a bit of luck and much will power, I am hoping to cut out the smokes all together, and greatly reduce my alcohol intake.

never a pain– thanks for the kind words— the amazing thing is that in many respects I have a mental age of about 7 lol.

I am really just a big kid– as I have said before– and i really do mean this– I am a bozo with a keyboard ( and no I don’t want a debate about that statement ).

I have never written a book in my life nor even started on one and given up like so many people appear to do.

One of these days I will get round to it—- The winning captain was giving me a particularly hard time about that on Friday over a small libation or six!!!

    ——————————————————————————————————————

    Starry Plough

I was once told a story by a man who had fallen off the wagon on more than one occasion.

He had spent some time in Leverndale Hospital after his latest fall from grace so to speak, and on this day, he was to be collected by his wife and taken home.

The wife had put up with a hell of a lot in the past and at one time had thrown him out of the house and told him that she wanted a legal separation and to go get a lawyer– oh and she added ” And don’t go getting that wee drinking pal drunkard lawyer friend of yours either” as she closed the door on him!

Well the man immediately went to the wee drunkard lawyer friend and explained the situation. The lawyer explained to the man that he did not have a marriage problem– he had a drinking problem– and that if he wanted to save his marriage then he had better start going to AA.

The man was astounded at this advice– especially coming from his drinking pal— until the lawyer pal explained that he had not had a drink for two years and was already an AA member— the guy just hadn’t noticed.

Anyway, the wee drunken lawyer who the wife didn’t want to see— contacted the wife, explained his own position and said he would take husband to AA.

….. and here he was, after several attempts at sobriety— waiting for the same wife coming to collect him from Leverndale.

She collected him in a car— and before the car got out of the hospital grounds she had to stop the vehicle a couple of times for her husband to be sick.

Why was he sick? Because he was terrified! Sobriety and failing to be sober terrified him.

All the way home on that car journey he repeated to himself ” This time” — ” This Time”—– “This time”…………

At the door of his house he saw 4 kids waiting for him—- and wondered how they had gotten there– who were they– really? Why did he not know them?

This time— This time—- This time.

Well—- I don’t know what happened but “this time” worked– and he has now been sober for nearly 40 years— he has the same wife— 5 kids—-and 13 grandchildren.

He ran a very successful business for years and has done great work for others over that 40 year period and tells many a good story about being a drunk and about being and getting sober.

So— if you are 360 days in— well done– you are well on your way with a great start.

The riches of being sober were great for the man in my story above– I am not saying there were not problems along the way but hey each life is a bumpy ride at times—- but you can deal with that with love and friendship and the knowledge that you don’t have to face the bumps on your own or through a bottle.

So well done you will be at your birthday soon– and that is something to really celebrate.

Oh– and the wee drunken lawyer fella– well he was my Big Boss wasn’t he?

That’s the way this works — fate or even serendipity lends a hand sometimes!

  20. miki67

    Nice one.

Up until say 15 years ago, I could leave the drink alone, wasn’t a bother, after living in Guinness land, I got a taste for the stuff, and moving here, wit the cheap vino, I have over indulged.

Brogans piece tonight reminded me of a time in the early 90s when I stood over the graves of 8 kids in a six month period, and six of them died through taking prescription drugs, all sons and daughters of family and close friends.

There for the grace of god.

I’m sure there is an AA here, but have never heard of it.

It seems like most folks here can handle their drink, many fall by the wayside, but I reckon it’s down to the relaxed attitude of society to alcohol.

Take the CL games next week, the bars will be full to the brim and I would wager 40% will be kids without their parents, couldn’t happen in britland.

sad thing is, the drugs are taking over these days.

I need to stop the smokes, they are killing me, the drink is but at a much slower rate.

I wouldn’t be a falling about alco, but my body needs it , I just need to reduce it on a daily basis.

The wife and I have done a deal, so come the end of the summer I should be posting smoke free and only a social drinker, and trust me, the incentive is ……………….
