What’s it to you, Charlie?

The news yesterday that HMRC would appeal the decision by the First Tier Tribunal (FTT) to reject the part of their tax demand against former club Rangers which was still open to dispute was received by most with passing interest.  The FTT returned a split decision, with the minority view giving HMRC substantial grounds for an appeal, and as we have heard often in recent years, HMRC always pursue tax under various circumstances.  Reasons include when they believe wrongdoing has occurred.

As such, it seemed strange that The Rangers chief executive, Charles Green, issued a statement on the subject yesterday as the on-going tax dispute “will have no affect (sic.) on us”.  He also wrote “in the strongest possible terms to HMRC pointing out the futility of such an appeal”.

If Green expects HMRC to read this letter and to countenance a change of tact he has a regard for his own abilities which are, frankly, a little curious.  No mere mortal could write a letter and bring about any change in such a dispute, which leads us to another question, is Charles Green a mere mortal, or does his aim occasionally stretch beyond his reach?  I’m sure we’re not dealing with a Self-Certified-Superman.

The point to this exercise is that while Green’s newco is not liable for another company’s taxes, his football club inherited the SFA place vacated by Rangers, including pesky football liabilities.  Fifa and SFA rules on paying social taxes are clear – avoid them illegally and face disciplinary action.

As the matter is on-going, the football authorities have yet to issue any disciplinary action for the non-payment of taxes for the five players Rangers conceded to the FTT.  Should the courts ultimately decide in favour of HMRC for the balance of players still being disputed, a fresh wave of disciplinary measures would be due against Green’s club.

Last summer we discussed how the toxicity which was attached to the club Craig Whyte inherited, and then relinquished in a worse state, would make going forward as a Newco with any connection whatsoever to the SFA membership of Oldco very difficult.  Many, including the Blue Knights consortium, concluded it didn’t look viable.

It still doesn’t. Scottish football needs to consider how to deal with the long term consequences of these matters.

    I stopped smoking 5yrs 10mths ago.

I tossed my fags and lighter into the bin at the pub and haven’t had one since. No patches or cutting down just cold turkey.

Not the recommended way to do it but it worked for me as I had finally admitted to myself that I didn’t enjoy them and I wasn’t bound to fail.

The big revelation was admitting to myself I was an addict. I didn’t like feeling they were controlling me and actually got extremely angry with myself.

I put a little program on my last laptop which started up automatically and counted to the second how long I’d been fag free, the number of cigs not smoked and how many days longer I was likely to live as a result of stopping.

Last time I fired it up (the old laptop) I hadn’t smoked 42,000 cigs and would live 145 days longer according to the US health calcs.

as i thought, I bet you would.

The next one up is a syndicate of four, probably bottling this year, a Sprinbank 11 Y.O. the only problem in being in a syndicate is everyone agreeing. Two of the guys want to decant this into another cask for six months as a finish (Madeira or Oloroso). I’m not going for the sherry finish and so we have a stalemate at the minute. If it doesn’t go in glass as an 11 this year it will later as a twelve with a six month Madeira finish, or as it lies.

I would have bottled this last year as it lies as a ten as it was fantastic dram, but consensus is required and I was voted 3/1…………………..Bah!!

    Still, it may get better.

    Watch this space………………………….yum yum:-)

tomcourtney, does you calc thingee work out how much you’d save or how much longer you’d live if you stopped, drinking, eating shite food, using fossil fuels, burning your lounge lights, or crossing the street while slightly distracted?

You sound like you live life on the edge tom. Hopefully you have plans for those 145 days?

I only want to live till Tuesday next week. Anything after that is a bonus. After that, I’ll take it as it comes.

  4. Can’t argue with the US health peeps if I don’t get my 145 days can I, or am I having them now? might be on day 144 for all I know.

  5. It’s the same for these scientists who tell us that a star is a thousand billion light years away.

You can’t really argue with them can you despite the suspiciously nice round numbers they always quote.

A close family member has serious problems with alcohol but so far doesn’t accept it – is at the cracking jokes stage. Here (Spain) there’s a different attitude towards alcohol and it makes me wonder if it’s more difficult to recognise alcoholism in the UK, or at least easier to deny it, because drinking heavily is more common and sometimes seems to be seen as an essential part of a social life. I don’t know.

I’d like to add my voice to those encouraging BRTH with the book idea. I love reading your articles. No matter what the topic they’re intelligent and engaging. You have a very nice, readable style of writing. :)

as_i_thought, I wanted to put the sprinbank in glass last year but I was overruled. It’s already fantastic, but my fellow members have a vision?

I will keep you informed of progress.

If you want a sample of my cellar in the mean time I’ll take a charitable donation. I’ve got three bottles from my last cask, Three Elements.

PC67, Pual67 or BMCUWP will give you my email addy.

Bottle number 001 from that cask will be offered on CQN but it’s not on offer tonight.

Hopefully we can get some huns bidding too. Farewell will do for me.

  13. From the BBC:

(Chris) Coleman, who managed Spain’s Real Sociedad between 2007 and 2008 and Larissa in Greece between 2010 and 2011, recalled games where he saw players “doing some crazy things” and “referees making crazy decisions”.

“You come off, and you are scratching your head and you are thinking: ‘Something [is] not quite right’.

    _________________________________________________________________

Chris, such events have been commonplace in Scotland for many years but nothing to do with betting syndicates. A far more subtle form of match fixing, requiring just a simple favouritism towards a now defunct club and against anyone who dared threatened their supremacy. This applied during games and by administrative authorities. This is still alive and kicking today.

This is why others have almost no sympathy towards their followers in light of their demise.

  14. Morning Celts que pasa?

Brilliant post by BRTH last night re alcoholism, I’m saving that one.

    Cheers BRTH.

  16. Woken up early again; still thinking about brth’s article: one of the most insightful I’ve ever read re. addiction, and that from a man who’s not an addict himself. A kind and caring man, too; the finest of writers.

There’s a wee joke told by recovering addicts: you reach rock bottom, then pull out a shovel and start digging.

I am proud to count amongst my best of friends (when in addiction, I had none, only ‘using buddies’) some of the lucky ones who have remained sober for years now.

Two of them recently went to Rome and met il Pappa.

A few years ago they were at death’s door.

    Sometimes miracles do occur.

  17. Morning All.

I normally skim through the night shift stuff and am left feeling that I wish I hadn’t bothered.

    Today couldn’t be more different.

Tremendous reading stemming from BRTH’s excellent article.

One shouldn’t count days. Each one is a bonus. But, if I get there, it’ll be No. 1000 on Saturday.

Sober is good. Wish I’ discovered it a long time ago but at least I have now.

You truly don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.

    FA dont want them!

What about the scores of English clubs whose ambition is to play in the League one day?

Be like a total stranger taking me to court because they like my house and they demand they be allowed to live in it with me.
