What’s it to you, Charlie?

640

The news yesterday that HMRC would appeal the decision by the First Tier Tribunal (FTT) to reject the part of their tax demand against former club Rangers which was still open to dispute was received by most with passing interest.  The FTT returned a split decision, with the minority view giving HMRC substantial grounds for an appeal, and as we have heard often in recent years, HMRC always pursue tax under various circumstances.  Reasons include when they believe wrongdoing has occurred.

As such, it seemed strange that The Rangers chief executive, Charles Green, issued a statement on the subject yesterday as the on-going tax dispute “will have no affect (sic.) on us”.  He also wrote “in the strongest possible terms to HMRC pointing out the futility of such an appeal”.

If Green expects HMRC to read this letter and to countenance a change of tact he has a regard for his own abilities which are, frankly, a little curious.  No mere mortal could write a letter and bring about any change in such a dispute, which leads us to another question, is Charles Green a mere mortal, or does his aim occasionally stretch beyond his reach?  I’m sure we’re not dealing with a Self-Certified-Superman.

The point to this exercise is that while Green’s newco is not liable for another company’s taxes, his football club inherited the SFA place vacated by Rangers, including pesky football liabilities.  Fifa and SFA rules on paying social taxes are clear – avoid them illegally and face disciplinary action.

As the matter is on-going, the football authorities have yet to issue any disciplinary action for the non-payment of taxes for the five players Rangers conceded to the FTT.  Should the courts ultimately decide in favour of HMRC for the balance of players still being disputed, a fresh wave of disciplinary measures would be due against Green’s club.

Last summer we discussed how the toxicity which was attached to the club Craig Whyte inherited, and then relinquished in a worse state, would make going forward as a Newco with any connection whatsoever to the SFA membership of Oldco very difficult.  Many, including the Blue Knights consortium, concluded it didn’t look viable.

It still doesn’t. Scottish football needs to consider how to deal with the long term consequences of these matters.

Celtic have issued an email , informing fans that they will have to take their passport to the stadium with them in Turin.

The purpose of this is to match the passport to the match ticket.

The police in Turin are very likely to see this action through.

My advice would be to not wear colours , and buy a ticket beside the old foggies in the Home section.

Anyone who gives you a ticket ( if it is discovered) is taking a huge risk, and you are unlikely to get into the away section with the ticket.

Sevco were previously planning to sue the FA for sex discrimination, now they’re being told to so it under competition law.

The best quote is ‘…as he sits down in Qatar…’ a real mover & shaker!

Jabba’s not trying very hard to repay oldco’s kindness!

  11. BRTH,

I read that with tears in my eyes.

I was sitting in a café in Broughty Ferry lunchtime Monday and my dining partner mentioned how one of her colleagues was dealing with his demons and how this was affecting the workplace.

I recounted my recent sad story on being an acting manager I was ‘given’ a poor soul to manage which I have come to regard as a test of my managerial appetite.

It’s not a story with a happy ending; the poor man has passed away recently.

As much as I was ambitious and I don’t really know why I didn’t do the ‘performance management’ piece and move him out of the business (and me moving up the tree), there’s a person there who needs compassion, support, whatever.

On numerous occasions I got a colleague to drive him home, I had 1:1s on a regular basis and I turned up at his house for a chat with him and his wife. I really tried my best and to this day, with tears in my eyes, I failed.

Please keep your thoughtful words coming, someone somewhere will take comfort and that’s the best a man can do.

Top of the morning to you all from a pleasantly sunny Fife and thanks to Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire for letting us know that the following companies have been dissolved:

He rightly poses the question, by who?

I suppose we could also add, why?

    We live in interesting times.

    =====================

Seriously, will you sleep better tonight if you get your questions answered? We do indeed live in interesting times… except I am not in the slightest bit interested about ex-hun/current hun companies which have not been operating for a number of months.

  19. I still don’t get it, Paul. Just what exactly is in it for Green. After all he’s a money man and sees an opportunity but I can’t see it under any circumstance. Maybe he’s smart and I’m thick! Just what is his long and medium term objective??

    Yes

The Torino Police and the Torino Civic Authorities have classified Juve / Celtic as a high risk game..

Similar measures were taken for the Juve / Chelsea game . Chelsea fans complained about being made very unwelcome and herded like cattle. There were no reports of trouble. Mad mental Juve Ultras websites described the Chelsea support as being ” fat badly dressed bank clerks ” and wondered where The Headhunters were —-were they too frightened to turn up in Torino ?

There was trouble before Juve / Norsjaelland.. A group of Danes were badly beaten following an incident in a bar —- media quoted the polis stating that the incident had been triggered by the Danes making inappropriate comments about the bar owner’s daughter..

I am going – I have a ticket. I will be with the old fogies.

More self publicizing if you ask me but don’t tell the hordes that the FA like the SFA , like UEFA require three years of accounts to get into any league as well.

  25. read a couple of comments about paddy and it is a crying shame that his talent isn’t on display, whether in a celtic shirt or not. lennon is excited about the return of forest. he couldn’t lace paddy’s boots and, at best, he is just nuisance value. he will not present juventus with any problems. I go along with the theory that if you’re not a manager’s favourite there’s no hope for you.
