When newspapers cut their own throat

712

I had very little interest in what former Rangers player Kirk Broadfoot did or said in a match against Wigan recently, I didn’t even know he was still in the game.  What makes him newsworthy (to some) today is a 10 match ban, handed down by The FA in England, for what was reportedly sectarian abuse.

What I found galling is how Mirror Group Newspapers reported this story.  The Mirror wrote:

“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for a sectarian tirade against James McClean.

The Rotherham and former Scotland defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”

Its Scottish sister paper the Daily Record reproduced the same text with one edit:

“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for launching a verbal tirade against James McClean.

The former Scotland and Rangers defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”

The italics are mine.  For reasons which don’t surprise me, the biggest selling Scottish newspaper decided it was unwise to report that a former Rangers player received a huge ban for sectarian abuse.  In 2015.

When Celtic Quick News started 11 years ago a couple of newspapers and radio stations pretty much controlled the news, politics and sports reporting in Scotland.  The journos all worked together; this was a real cabal.  If they wanted to blacken the name of a Fergus McCann, or his like, droves of people quickly turned away from him.

CQN started because reporting like this was rife and unchecked.  I know the value of the new “citizen” media, but I also know its limits.  We need newspapers, we need people to continue to buy them and we need them to find a viable business model.  Without them, reporting which requires considerable resource, experience and, occasionally, money, will not happen.

Most of all, we need them to stop cutting their own throat.

I’m off to Aberdour today, for the 12th CQN Golf Charity Open, not that I’m a golfer, of course.  See you there.

Not, i hasten to add, that I’m insinuating all rebels are pirates… Only that all pirates are rebels

I need a Venn Diagram here

  4. The first leg being at home I’ve always felt is an advantage, regardless of who we are playing. I know the conventional wisdom is the other way around but the Seville season we were home first every round.

That away goal is so important (or rather making sure you don’t lose one) and it helps when the away team keep it tight and aren’t too adventurous because it’s the first leg.

When the second leg is comes round you have a better idea what’s needed and whether to push for that away goal. When it’s tight in the return leg Qarabag could be in a situation where they’d wished they had one but there’s nothing they can do about it.

Hopefully there is a good attendance. The 48,000 for the Icelanders was great but being on the season book aswell as the first opportunity to see the hoops at CP helped.

If you’re saving your money for the playoff game, don’t!

Get along and help the bhoys get there. (Celtic don’t have the opportunity for dinner date with Jim White to boost ticket sales so that’ll have to do.)

el madrigal, booked mine yesterday. No paper ticket. Straight onto the sb.

    Looking forward to it.

But Stjarnan were on the ‘season ticket’ ☺️ – £20 – £22 is reasonable but with only six selling days, could we have made it cheaper and ensured a mega crowd?

  7. A Ceiler Gonof Rust,

    Good man.

Always hate ties like these. The likes of Stjarnan we will overcome because we are much better than them. The playoff games are much like when Barca or Juve or Man Utd etc come to town. They just seem to take care of themselves.

3rd round qualifier against Qarabag,to give it a 2003 Uefa Cup equivalent,

would be Celta Vigo. Very tricky, tread carefully. Just win.

That’s actually an excellent point, especially in this instance when it’s such a long distance.

Something I always find strange is the fact that if we do qualify, then we will have 60k for each game. Yet, the next qualifier is even more important. Having 60k at the game next week, I feel would guarantee we progress

Kirk club foot and Linsey no very sharp spouting off ! That’s all they got ? The war is over the rebels have won .

Only £10 for the grey Brigade 0:-) Weather permitting, I predict another close to 50k crowd.

Up early tomorrow so goodnight all,

Oh, meant to say. I had a we look at Qarabag on Youtube and they look a decent outfit. No gimme this one.

    Definite goodnight !

  12. I see no mention of Celtic TV showing the game on Wednesday.

I assume UEFA have the rights and we will have to resort to dodgy connections?

Any news on whether any of the UK terrestrial or satellite channels will be showing it?

  13. Good night all

  14. Maggie @21:02,

You’re entitled to your opinion which I respect and agree with somewhat.

Ron Bacardi didn’t deserve the inappropriate reply as far as I’m concerned.

I take it, with the tone of your words, you have taken this up with Paul personally? I’d be interested in his reply.

I made the mistake of watching that late one night after I had taken my medication.

I was in tears of joy and sadness.

  17. butsybhoy/hebcelt/jamesgang,

    Sorry bhoys, just back on.

If you are interested in a kodi then e-mail me at:

doogan, followed by the year we won the big cup (last 2 nos) @ btinternet.com

    and we’ll get something sorted.

Jamesgang – can you watch a you-tube video without it buffering all the time? If so then your b-band should be sufficient. I reckon 10 mbs download is enough. The boaxes also have an ethernet port that you can plug straight into your router if wi-fi is a problem.

ps. don’t go and see the latest George Clooney film – Tomorrowland or something, wifey just watched it on the old kodi box and it is guff of the highest order.

  18. Thanks HT for reply. Was away part of last week but hoped you got my email. Strange is it not, that I wrote to one Minister, was then handed on to a second and received a final reply from a third person who I did not write to in the first place. Will reply to him during the week just to keep the pressure on them. By the way,the local MSP refuses to reply and so does a local councillor. The latter is a Morton supporter so football issues may not be important to him.
