When the rebels manned the barricades

605

Back in 1994, when our day of greatest need arrived, Celtic fans had already invested years in developing a recovery strategy in case the club faced extinction.  A disparate group of “rebels” filtered out good ideas from bad, established a platform for recovery and ensured that when the hour came, one man was ready and able to walk into a branch of Bank of Scotland and deposit a large sum of money into Celtic’s account, while others rallied support and prepared for the recovery.

Those rebels eventually went their own ways as many of those who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Fergus McCann found allies in conflict didn’t make for friends in peacetime, but the rebels were united long enough to Save our Celts.  Without their preparation, Celtic would have quickly gone into administration and who knows where thereafter.

Compare and contrast with Rangers in their hour of need.  There is no preparation, no consensus of the willing, not even an acceptance that this is, in fact, an hour of need.

I bloody well hope not! :-)

I do want a competitive league, though but not with them in it. Someone revived memories of the 1980s last night with a strong New Firm and both Edinburgh teams improving. That would be great as far as I’m concerned and would make the SPL more attractive and keep us sharp for Europe.

I can but dream. However, I know nothing about financial wheeling and dealing and the negative effects of gate share (only a proportion) for us.

  2. let’s be under no illusion here, the newco will be allowed right back in, however a severe penalty will be placed upon them, this would put off players they were trying to sign, they will never properly recover from this,

Great post, the huns have been the shackle round the neck of Scottish Football for years, free from that shackle perhaps the game could flourish again perhaps not, one thing is for sure it can’t get much worse than it is now.

They have created this chaos and it’s their mess to clean up.Good luck with that!!

This could be the greatest opportunity for the reform of Scottish Football and the leveling of the playing field.

The people who run the game could also be implicated in this mess as the story unfolds as the great man once said…

“Damn! Oh well, at least we know the Record story isn’t true as we wouldn’t be bidding for £5m players if it was. A hunner ‘n’ ten perct behind Mr Whyte”

ernie lynch, Bob Kelly had the backing of the other league clubs, including Rangers, who quickly made him SFA general secretary. This is why he won his point. He never threatened/offered to walk Celtic off a plank.

So you think the other clubs in this league would back Rangers over us?

And you base that on what?

If we stand up over the point of principle, if we fight for the integrity of the league, if we fight to see that the rules – the sodding RULES – are applied as written, and we are not asking for much, only that the rules be FOLLOWED, and we make this stand in polar opposite to a club which had defrauded the revenue, bankrupt itself chasing trophies, and in the process bankrupt half of Scottish football ….

…. you are saying they will back THAT rather than our own club, who have been run professionally, who has observed the rules, who has respected the integrity of the league and is fighting for its reputation?

If that’s the case then sod them. I mean it. Sod the lot of it. Roll out the lawyers and force open the door to England. I know – I know for sure – that there are people inside Celtic Park who fancy our chances in a courtroom.

  22. Paul67 – Your points are always well made. As things stand, with all you know, with everything that is in the public domain and can be commented on, do you believe that Rangers in some form or another will be in the SPL and our main rival next season and the seasons to come? Just your opinion, I appreciate that it is a fluid situation and things could change tomorrow.

I clearly stated that football was the driving business, but not the overall business.

And at no point did I state that Rangers bad decisions = Celtic good decisions.

Do you just make up what you read?

  25. Paul67,

    It’s me again.

I have posted often on Celtic’s position.

I have repeatedly described it as a dilemma, and it is.

Obviously, we don’t want to put ourselves out of business and your argument is logical.

However, how far can we compromise in accepting the will of the nation?

A conclusion that Scottish society demands.

Celtic has it’s own support to consider and the ethos with which we are endowed.

That is the dilemma in which we are placed and I don’t know what a realistic and honourable outcome will be.

    Do you?

The “newco straight to SPL” advocators need to reconcile the following:

 It is not the legal entity Rangers (1872) FC (whatever their damned name is)

 There may be more than one claim to be the “newco Rangers”

 None of the prospective owners can have held Board positions at OldCo for the previous 5 years (e.g. Paul Murray, David King)

 The TV deal with Sky, allegedly predicated on 4 x Celtic v Old Co Rangers games is dead in any case

 If it wears light blue, plays at Ibrox, has Rangers in the name and many of the same players, then potentially distressed creditors have a decent shout of “That’s Rangers! Pay Up”

 Newco may have no players

 Newco may have no license to play professional football in Scotland

 Newco may have no stadium to play in nor training facilities

     It costs £3.5 m / month to run a club like Rangers, that’s nearly £40m a year

 How long, typically, does it take to liquidate a company of Rangers size, start to end (hours, days, months, years – ballpark)?

Can someone explain to me the mechanics of how, seamlessly, the Newco arises phoenix-like into the SPL with not a heart beat missed?

  28. I know the SPL are an automonus (spelling) organisation, but every member club must be a member of the SFA, a newco would have to get membership of the SFA before applying for a place in the SPL.

  29. Which Rangers?

Who’s going to pay the mortgage?

Who’s going to fund the bonds/debentures?

Who’s going to pay the tax?

What if Partick Thistle decide that they want a shot in the PL?

    Why should Hibs/Dunfermline accept relegation?

Why should Ross County/Falkirk not get a chance in the PL based on merit?
