When the rebels manned the barricades

605

Back in 1994, when our day of greatest need arrived, Celtic fans had already invested years in developing a recovery strategy in case the club faced extinction.  A disparate group of “rebels” filtered out good ideas from bad, established a platform for recovery and ensured that when the hour came, one man was ready and able to walk into a branch of Bank of Scotland and deposit a large sum of money into Celtic’s account, while others rallied support and prepared for the recovery.

Those rebels eventually went their own ways as many of those who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Fergus McCann found allies in conflict didn’t make for friends in peacetime, but the rebels were united long enough to Save our Celts.  Without their preparation, Celtic would have quickly gone into administration and who knows where thereafter.

Compare and contrast with Rangers in their hour of need.  There is no preparation, no consensus of the willing, not even an acceptance that this is, in fact, an hour of need.

I was surprised at your assertion that Celtic had widespread support from the majority of their rivals in the infamous flag dispute.

I could be wrong, but my memory & my understanding of the situation is that ONLY Rangers voiced any support for Celtic.

So what you’re saying is we need to help the other SPL clubs get new bankers. Based on our Board ‘expertise’ if they put a bit of effort in that should be doable, especially if they have been considering this and working on it for some time.

They have been working on this for some time haven’t they?

Or does this fall into the ‘convenient excuse’ bracket?

In an ideal world a club other than Celtic [Aberdeen? Hearts , if they still exist,?] would be in the forefront of the protests against les Horribles Nouveaux getting back into the Trumpton Premier League.

Even though they have brought it all on themselves the assembled Hunguffrage will be deployed to blame Celtic for their woes if they end up in Trumpton Div 3.

  9. glasgow road @ 13:52 – Excellent post, hail hail my friend.

paul67 – you mentioned Bank of Scotland, do we know what clubs bank with which Banks , obviously we are with Co-op. Could be difficult for a partly state owned Bank to press the issue for clubs to support newco, particularly if the same state’s revenue are defrauded as part of liquidation.

I base this only on the self financial interest of the individual chairman. Many eloquent posts have highlighted the pros and cons of the other clubs voting against the possibility of a newco being accepted immediately straight back in to the top tier.

One last thing – unless you and SydneyTim have access to the monthly accounts, how can you possibly know how much of our bank credit facilities we use up?

Annual reports are compiled at a time after ST money starts coming in and interim halfway through the season. What about immediately prior to ST moneys arriving? The period from December 30 onwards, where we’re paying out c£4m each month. Bank debt sat at £9m or thereabouts at year end 2010, with vast sums due long before ST money came in a few months later.

Genuine question, but how much do you suspect our debt was at the end of that season?

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was close to £30m.

From what I’ve seen they suffer myopia through greed. They will opt for the short term fix eg newco = a bigger tv deal.

We see the long term advantage to the smaller clubs but this takes forethought and patience. I don’t believe the rest will show this.

  22. As for Celtic resigning, its a non starter, as a matter of corporate law they must act in the interest of the majority of shareholders, I doubt if the resignation of a very much going concern from its market place (without a home to go to) would carry the day, corporate businesses dont go in for grand gestures nor should they, and this will also apply to any Newco decision the other thing corporations do is Pyrrhic victories no matter how much we would hope they would

There has been much reference to the Stages of Grief and that the articles in the DR evidence progress.

Nonsense. There has been NO progress towards self enlightenment amongst David Murray and his friends in the media. The BBC Documentary, the Alistair Johnson interviews, the DR exclusives – all about protecting Murray and minted pals – nothing more.

    The agenda is two fold:

    1. protect reputations (Murray, Smith etc) and

    2. fastest route back to normality (Frankenstein Rangers back in the SPL)

But what is clear is that there is no turning back from where we are about to go. Colours are being nailed to the mast, and this will never be forgotten – the MSM in Scotland are in full “Save Rangers” mode. This runs deep – the attempt to demonise Neil Lennon, to legitimise attacks on those deemed “Irish” or “Catholic” by all arms of the state in Scotland. The timing is not coincidental – that would be naïve.

Our challenge, collectively, is to ensure the debate is framed such that there is recognition of wrong doing, that resolutions are seen to be fair and equitable and that the greater good is served.

Our greatest advantage, gloriously, is the arrogant disinterest from the customers of Rangers: uninformed; disengaged; devoid of self reflection; bloated with titles, trinkets, lamb and moonbeams. Rome is burning.
