When the rebels manned the barricades

605

Back in 1994, when our day of greatest need arrived, Celtic fans had already invested years in developing a recovery strategy in case the club faced extinction.  A disparate group of “rebels” filtered out good ideas from bad, established a platform for recovery and ensured that when the hour came, one man was ready and able to walk into a branch of Bank of Scotland and deposit a large sum of money into Celtic’s account, while others rallied support and prepared for the recovery.

Those rebels eventually went their own ways as many of those who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Fergus McCann found allies in conflict didn’t make for friends in peacetime, but the rebels were united long enough to Save our Celts.  Without their preparation, Celtic would have quickly gone into administration and who knows where thereafter.

Compare and contrast with Rangers in their hour of need.  There is no preparation, no consensus of the willing, not even an acceptance that this is, in fact, an hour of need.

  1. Fair enough its good to have a big squad but 4 RB’s (5 if Wilson stays) ? I feel getting rid of a few players wouldve freed up some wages for better players. Billy McNeil said in the Evening Times a few weeks back that we could field 3 decent teams – must be nearer 4 now?

Jelavic still not signed on doted line. Interesting if he had to come back up the road on the City-link bus.

The only fly in the ointment as far as Sir David Murray is concerned is that Whyte has gone rogue.

It is interesting that Murray never sold to Ellis.

Ellis coughed up 25p did he not ? not a joke btw

    Where is Ellis now ?

Sir David Murray wanted Rangers dead and he wanted them dead before the tax case appeal. That´s why Smith packed it in. All to aid hun demise

Thereby Whyte looks a liar (so what) and he and Ellis can do what Murray promised he would never do. Sell to an asst stripper. Oh the Irony

Bain therefore started throwing money around left right and centre and Whyte disposed of him knowing what he was up to. Spend spend spend our way to administration. Get rid of before the transfer window. Along with Mc Intyre.

BUT Ellis & co had a good look around ….. waited to see if they could get CL & SC money … it would be a nice bonus but that´s all.

After Grieg and Hitchcock were dumped ….. the BBC was called in (by Murray) ….

They are now looking at trying to keep the hun alive until the judges come back and lay the blame fair and square at Murrays door and all his acolytes

Only then Whyte & Ellis will look much better.

Certainly to be trusted with a newco hun if it is indeed possible more so than any previous regime member.. they hold all the cards …. much to the consternation of the old hun guard …as they have given them enough already … and they want to determines Newco´s future not Ellis and his cronies

Unfortunately Whyte didn´t play game …. did Murray really expect any other outcome ?

I think he trusted Whyte more than Ellis….. hoping he would be more cooperative towards him and/or his like minded cronies and with the promise of a brown paper bag in the cayman islands

Ellis has obviously persuaded Whyte their is more money to be had doing it this way rather than Murrays.

LAST PARAGRAPH SAYS IT ALL REALLY!

While I could have gone on for a considerable while longer about all the worrying possibilities that would have resulted from the lack of a change of ownership last summer, I think it is now time to get back to the reality that faces us today. Whyte’s plans would no doubt have been dealt a dull blow by Rangers’ premature exit from two European competitions thanks to some questionable management from McCoist and some below-par performances from the players. History shows us the financial difficulties that inevitably result from such blemishes on our record and exits under McLeish and Smith have both made things very difficult for our club in the past. McCoist was certainly criticised heavily at the time, and rightly so, but his role seems to be ignored following the headlines that have come to the fore today. Thanks to the European exits, something almost totally out of the hand of our chairman, our club are missing approximately £10-15M worth of revenue. For a club with a turnover like our own, that represents and astonishingly significant amount and should be factored into consideration.

Paul Murray, the former director who claims to have made a legitimate offer to buy our club, has again stuck his head above the surface to flag up various concerns for the Rangers supporters. Firstly let me start by saying that I highly doubt that any offer he made was even workable. If it was anything like a proper business plan then I see no reason why Sir David Murray would not have sold the club to him. The other question is to why it took our ex-director so long to formulate such a plan and as to why his offer was not placed on the table at a much earlier date, especially when he knew Whyte was interested. For a man who talks about having the best interests of the club at heart, his actions in the last few years certainly fail to demonstrate it.

I think as Rangers fans it is indeed a very worrying time and I don’t wish my comments above to be seen as papering over the cracks or sticking my head in the sand. What I’ve tried to demonstrate is where we could be if Whyte had not stepped forward and purchased out club and to look at the comments made in the papers today. The mortgaging of season tickets is certainly a risky business but with administration being a distinct possibility, it may actually work in our favour. If the tax case goes against us, and remember this is something that Whyte cannot control, then all our debts would die with our current company and we would reform and carry on, albeit with a points deduction and lack of a European licence. Financially though, it could be a smart move, but then again, perhaps that is just wishful thinking.

  10. Nikica Jelavic has yet to sign a contract with Everton despite the Blues agreeing a fee for his services with Rangers.

Jelavic was seen rushing out of Goodison Park by Sky Sports News camera to head back to his hotel, but without having signed a deal, or even taken a tour of Goodison.

Everton officials had hoped to have the deal signed off before the Manchester City game, but it would appear we will have to wait for the Croatian to sign on the dotted line

Apart from the Horribles Ticketus are also involved at Plymouth Argyle, a much lovelier institution [play in green, Michael Foot etc, etc] but given the parlous state of the Pilgrims’ finances I’m beginning to wonder if being in hock to Ticketus is an early sign of rigor mortis.

News just released from Ibrokes Jelavic cant agree personal terms with Everton and is on his way back to Glasgow. It is said when they found fat Ally to tell him he was trying on an xxxl Rangers top as Whyte said he couldnt sign a new striker but Ally could become player manager but fat Ally was struggling to find a kit to fit him.H.H.;- )

So Everton have a deal in principle with Rangers.

    Jelavic fancies Everton.

Rangers are in considerable need of the dough from the deal.

Jelavic is underwhelmed by Everton’s terms.

Everton’s budget is maxed given the transfer fee.

    What to do?

Let Rangers know that Jelavic wants more than Everton can afford, and insist if the deal is going to close, Jelavic’s terms must be met in part from the transfer fee.

Quick call to Rangers to let them know how much it’s going to cost them.

Rangers have a decision to make.
