When the rebels manned the barricades

605

Back in 1994, when our day of greatest need arrived, Celtic fans had already invested years in developing a recovery strategy in case the club faced extinction.  A disparate group of “rebels” filtered out good ideas from bad, established a platform for recovery and ensured that when the hour came, one man was ready and able to walk into a branch of Bank of Scotland and deposit a large sum of money into Celtic’s account, while others rallied support and prepared for the recovery.

Those rebels eventually went their own ways as many of those who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Fergus McCann found allies in conflict didn’t make for friends in peacetime, but the rebels were united long enough to Save our Celts.  Without their preparation, Celtic would have quickly gone into administration and who knows where thereafter.

Compare and contrast with Rangers in their hour of need.  There is no preparation, no consensus of the willing, not even an acceptance that this is, in fact, an hour of need.

  1. Let the wounded beast limp on until it bleeds to death. No mercy killings please – a long, drawn out, inhumane death is what IT deserves. The hyenas are starting to cackle, nipping tentatively at the ankles, the vultures are circling overhead but on it limps, further into the wilderness looking for sanctuary. Soon enough, it will be on its knees and not able to fend off the attacks which will come from every direction. Slowly the bites will penetrate the flesh, then the vital organs will be exposed, ripped out and fought over. The heart, still beating, will eventually be starved of blood and cease.

The Circle of Life – just about complete.

”Events of 1952, not 1951, from the brilliant CelticWiki-“

Interesting stuff – especially when you put in the context of them putting Belfast Celtic out of Business a couple of seasons earlier.

Still I think the fact that RFC stood with us has little to do with current affairs, we don’t have any moral obligation to help them survive their self inflicted trauma – quite the opposite in fact.

    =======================================================================

    NOW

I know that not everything RFC does follows the logic, rules & regulations applied to other businesses and football clubs – it is also fair to say in the midst of such a tangled web the question is small beer.

    HOWEVAH

We see Mr Dave King put in his tuppence worth again (might in actual fact be SARs pennies) the fact is he is a Director of R@ngers, a non-exec @ that whose responsibilities include:-

”Non-executive directors have responsibilities in the following areas, according to the Higgs Report, commissioned by the British Government and published in 2003:[1][2]

    • Strategy: Non-executive directors should constructively challenge and contribute to the development of strategy.

    • Performance: Non-executive directors should scrutinise the performance of management in meeting agreed goals and objectives and monitoring, and where necessary removing, senior management and in succession planning.

    • Risk: Non-executive directors should satisfy themselves that financial information is accurate and that financial controls and systems of risk management are robust and defensible.

    • People: Non-executive directors are responsible for determining appropriate levels of remuneration of executive directors and have a prime role in appointing, and where necessary removing, senior management and in succession planning.

NEDs should also provide independent views on:

    • Resources

    • Appointments

    • Standards of conduct

Non-executive directors are the custodians of the governance process. They are not involved in the day-to-day running of business but monitor the executive activity and contribute to the development of strategy.

As a NED he is reponsible for the ALL the shareholders interests and he has a right, Nea a duty to take action against the Board.

Why would he be a non-exec be talking to the Daily Record about non-compliance rather the Board and shareholders?

    Anybody Know?

I thought along the same lines as soon as I was made aware of the Record`s content for today. I then read the following on the BBC website and this strengthened my original view that Record sales could soon be in serious decline:

“I for one will not be reading or buying the Daily Record again and I’m sure many other Rangers fans will share my disgust at yet another smear on this football club.” (CW)

Mind you, I would have been quite happy in the past for our owner to have made a similar statement about various media organs in Scotland.

  9. Whyte’s statement is hastily put together to head off the torch ‘bear’ers. Nothing else. The way the day has been going the hysteria would have seen the place razed to the ground.

  10. Craig Whyte states jellylegs wanted to leave. Aunt Sally stated he did not play because he was ill and he was happy to be at rangers.

So who is telling the porkies then?

  11. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Good Day All.

Reading all the contributions about Whyte’s borrowing arrangements I couldn’t help but think of the scene below from Goodfellas. (I especially like the last sentence)

Although unaware of how to run a restaurant, Paulie (the Don) promises to offer protection by becoming a partner. Sonny is now committed and beholden to Paulie:

“Now the guy’s got Paulie as a partner. Any problems, he goes to Paulie. Trouble with a bill, he can go to Paulie. Trouble with the cops, deliveries, Tommy, he can call Paulie.

“But now the guy’s got to come up with Paulie’s money every week. No matter what.

Business bad? F–k you, pay me. Oh, you had a fire? F–k you, pay me. The place got hit by lightning, huh? F–k you, pay me.

“Also, Paulie could do anything. Especially run up bills on the joint’s credit. And why not? Nobody’s gonna pay for it anyway.

And as soon as the deliveries are made in the front door, you move the stuff out the back and sell it at a discount. You take a two hundred dollar case of booze and you sell it for a hundred. It doesn’t matter. It’s all profit.

“And then finally, when there’s nothing left, when you can’t borrow another buck from the bank or buy another case of booze, you bust the joint out. You light a match.”

Big Nan – no probs, I googled the derby game for 01/01/1951 and we got beat 1-0 ‘on a heavily waterlogged pitch’.

    but still, karma,eh?

The combined fleets of Eddie Stobart and Norbert Dentressangle couldn’t carry all the karma that’s heading their way.

Rangers has been dramtically weakened in this window with 6 out and only one in

    Out –

    Fleck

    Weir

    Jela

    Ortiz

    McMillan

    Ness (rumoured)

    In

    Mervan Celik

That leaves us with only one fit striker at Ibrox in the shape of David Healy. Ally must be tearing his hair out. Lets hope he can get someone in. To be honest I am not hopeful which begs the question.

Who do we play up front ?

A truely disgraceful situation at our beloved club !

Oh Dear what can the matter be Declan

  14. It’s amazing how stupid and gullible the Huns are. A statement, probably written for him by his lawyers, put together as a desperate measure to appease the bigoted hordes, and all of a sudden, Whyte is suddenly flavour of the month despite selling their top striker and bringing no1 in!!!!

This sort of figures would give a £8m average:

    Jul-12m

    Aug-6m

    Sept-0m

    Oct+2m

    Nov+4m

    Dec-0m

    Jan-4m

    Feb-8m

    Mar-12m

    Apr-16m

    May-24m

    Jun-20m

You wouldn’t need a directly opposing set of figures to offset a heavy debt to an average of £9m or thereabouts.

The only figure I’m remotely interested in the highest debt amount as this is the figure that determines, ultimately, where we can go in terms of debt. It is also this figure that could cause the orcs some interesting problems in the next month or two (as they are fast approaching their’s).

My point on bankers is this:

If you had gone to Fergus and said; ‘Fergus, it looks like we’ll lose the vote on this one. It’s not the other clubs desire but they are being squeezed by their bankers and pressured to vote the other way.’

What would Fergus have said and more importantly what would he have done? He would have addressed the root of the problem in some way. He would not have sat by and said ‘Oh Dear, never mind’.

We are supposed to have a ‘business’ board of high calibre. This is exactly their core business. The idea that they can achieve zilch seems poor to me.

In point of fact we don’t need them all to change bankers we only need one. Hibs aren’t in bad shape compared to the rest. They might like to bank with a more understanding bank?

We might know some people who we have a good banking reputation with who might want to look at a new customer?

Whilst this idea may seem preposterous to you when what’s at stake is so important I’d hope the Board are looking at a range of ‘preposterous’ options even if it’s just to eliminate them.

I accept that it is difficult to make sense of why there is no urgency in developing a rescue package and a plan to revive the ethos of rankers from the ashes. Maybe just maybe there is no appetite to re-invent such an appetite ! Possibly we should blame that lack of motivation on a system of business with a distinct lack of social conscience. /

Certainly in modern business, as we have seen from CQN and RTC, transparency, and openness, integrity and honesty, trustworthiness, respect for others are all ideals that any ethically based business should achieve. Its also good for business.
