Why Celtic have to make a success of Iwata

208

Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi were our original players from the east, recruited during Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge.  Kyogo was transformational, a truly special player.  Despite injury midway through that season, his influence over Scottish football was profound.

Like Kyogo, Daizen made a blistering start, scoring four minutes into his debut against Hibs.  A few weeks after arriving, Reo demolished Newco, scoring twice and assisting with a third.

Yosuke had the opposite introduction to Scotland.  He was assaulted during a brutal Cup game at Alloa, the resultant injury saw him used sparingly on his return.  The 28 minutes he got in the final league game of the season, against Motherwell, was more than the sum of all bit parts he played in other games following injury.  This season has been a wipe-out.

If asked to give your view on the player, you would struggle.  An alarm bell may have chimed for Yosuke when he discovered he was cover for captain, Callum McGregor.  Across football, captains and central defenders are seldom shuffled.  Callum has the added attribute of being almost indestructible, although he was a fellow assault-ee that night in Alloa.  If the captain is never rested, his understudy is not going to see action.

The world moved on in January and Tomoki Iwata, our sixth Japanese player, after the recent addition of Yuki Kobayashi, joined the most profound Japanese influence on western culture since the Plastic Ono Band co-opted John Lennon and Eric Clapton (don’t bother troubling your streaming service for that lot).

Tomoki was crowned Player of the Year in Japan in December, he is a talent who should be given the opportunity to flourish.  Can you see Ange resting Callum, even home to St Mirren on Saturday?  Me neither.  A reputation for improving and propelling players has to be a part of the story.  If we ‘waste’ them, supply of the good ones will dry up.

And the post Hotel California Eagles were just as bad. I loved the country rock early version, but couldn’t stand the over-produced stuff that followed.

I did the ‘pilgrimage’ in Lisbon 3 years ago. I jumped in a taxi with the Hoops on and the guy quickly knew where i wanted to go.

There was a security guard there and he just said ‘go on, but stay off the pitch’

Got out and realised I was effectively in a big park/uni campus and started walking back to town and a taxi was sitting in a bus stop. Maybe the previous guy radioed that there was a pick up there

    Really enjoyed it

Thank you for the advice. I am off to Lisboa on 15 April for a week. Another of my bucket list to be ticked off.

I’ve been twice. Get the train from any of station on the sea front, 3.50 euros to Cruz Quebrada. The wee station is like something out of cowboy movie. Cross the tracks and walk up through the park for about a mile. You’ll see the floodlights. Go through the tradesmen’s entrance and walk up the famous tunnel corridor. Coming up to pitch just as the Lions did, is a fantastic experience. You’ll love it.

  7. If I have read correctly, ernie lynch has been banned FOR LIFE because he sent an abusive e-mail to the Moderator.

What on earth has personal correspondence got to do with CQN?

I like the fact that CQN encourages politeness and does not allow swearing but this banning of ernie FOR LIFE seems very reactionary.

  9. Every manager has their go to strongest team for the big games.

If Ange can’t give a start to squad players at home against Saint Mirren then we will inevitably lose players like Turnbull in the months ahead. And I wouldn’t blame them in the slightest for wanting a move.

We’ve a strong squad in a weak league, there’s absolutely no need to keep starting CalMac.

    Re the bannings;

seems harsh in the case of Tom and Canamalar, and I doubt if even those who are most irked by Ernie’s posts would want him banned for life.

His personal email to the Mod must have been very abusive to an extent way beyond his usual sarcasm and condescension .

  15. 1967: Celtic win European Cup

Celtic has become the first British team to win the European Cup, beating favourites Internazionale Milan 2-1.

An estimated crowd of 70,000 crammed into the Portuguese National Stadium in Lisbon to witness the Glasgow side lift the greatest prize in club football.

Milan have been champions of Europe three times in the past four years and this was only their second defeat in continental competition in that time.

As the final whistle blew, euphoric Celtic fans poured onto the pitch to celebrate their team’s victory, many whooping with joy and waving banners.

    Blistering attack

The manager, Jock Stein, said: “There is not a prouder man on God’s Earth than me at this moment. Winning was important, but it was the way that we won that has filled me with satisfaction.

“We did it by playing football; pure, beautiful, inventive football. There was not a negative thought in our heads.”

According to the Celtic players, Stein told his players to “go out and enjoy themselves” at the start of the match.

But it could all have turned out very differently. Within minutes of kick-off defender Jim Craig felled Renato Cappellini and Alessandro Mazolla netted the resulting penalty.

Milan held onto their early lead until half-time. But shortly after the break Celtic full-back Tommy Gemmel scored the equaliser

The goal gave Celtic the inspiration the players needed. They continued to attack the Italian goal until Gemmel again stormed up the left wing, passed back to Bobby Murdoch who sent a powerful shot towards the goal which was deflected into the net by Stevie Chalmers to give the Glasgow side a 2-1 lead.

The celebrations began immediately and although the Portuguese police feared the crowd would get out of control, there was no hooliganism.

But the chaos inside the stadium meant that the Celtic players could not be presented with the trophy on the pitch.

Instead club captain Billy McNeill had to be ushered round the outside of the stadium under armed escort. He then climbed the stairs to the presentation podium where he finally held the trophy aloft to enormous cheers from the crowd.

Jubilant fans danced in the streets of Glasgow after hearing of their club’s 2-1 win .

The team is expected to fly into Abbotsinch Airport in Glasgow tomorrow night, from where they will drive to Celtic Park for a heros’ welcome from fans.

  16. In Context

The 11 players became known as the Lisbon Lions – the first non-Latin side to win the European championships.

The team players were all born within a 30-mile radius of Glasgow.

They flew into Glasgow the following day and were transported by coach to Celtic Park where an estimated 50,000 people had packed into the grandstand and terraces to greet their heroes.

Jock Stein was credited with creating the winning side. He had joined as manager in March 1965 and within weeks Celtic had won the Scottish Cup for the first time in 11 years – they had previously been beaten in four finals.

Tom and Ernie were told to stop some low level bickering or get banned for a day. They had one more round and banned
