Why players betting on games is a serious offence

1618

How do you find out that a footballer is betting on the game?  They don’t walk into bookies and hand a slip over at the counter, this stuff is all done on smartphones or by telephone.

Betting information is protected by the Data Protection Act, the SFA have no authority to ask and bookmakers have no authority to tell, even if they know a player is breaking SFA rules.

Even if a player sits in the dressing room, and announces that he’s just bet on the match about to take place, and all his team-mates reported him, he would be able to dismiss the charge on the basis that his comments were a joke.  No one could prove otherwise.

But, very specific charges are levelled at players.

The betting industry survives on the quality of their information being better than that of their customers.  “Are you likely to win at the weekend?”, “Any inside info on who the new manager will be?”, “Who’s struggling to be fit for Saturday (and therefore unlikely to be first scorer)?”

If you are a player, you have the inside line on a market worth hundreds of millions each year.  Football has an unhealthy relationship with bookmakers, at some clubs, the betting partner has their own lounge and has full access to the players’ lounge.  Many players are big gamblers and some have big incomes.  They are both significant clients for bookies and potential sources of inside information.  Like many big gamblers, they are offered special odds, not available to the general public.

Let me tell you one way of catching a player who is gambling on football.  He is tempted away from his old bookie to one who has become friendly with, possibly after giving his former bookie a bum steer on a striker who was supposed to be injured.  The former bookie then ‘discovers’ that the name on one of their accounts doesn’t match the name on the linked bank account, and that this account holder is a footballer.

The bookie is now officially concerned that illegal match fixing is going on.  With the possibility of criminality (even if it is without basis), they can alert the authorities.  That would teach the player a lesson for leaving, while making money through advantageous odds and feeding bum information back, and destroy whatever competitive advantage the other bookie has.

Does anyone know of any other way a specific charge of gambling on football could be raised?

Maybe the players are all just daft laddies.  Maybe the SFA decline to release reports into players gambling because there is nothing to see in them.  Maybe you can break the rules on betting but not be punished because it’s a silly rule.

You don’t need to be match fixing to be involved in serious criminality when dealing with a bookmaker.  The football watching public need transparency from the SFA on this issue, no matter how much money floods into the game from the gambling industry.

That’s why men are better at driving.

Mike in Toronto. The Rangers are big financial trouble they will be very lucky to last 12 months unless someone bank rolls them for millions. Now they cant give Ibrokes or Murray park as security against any loan.It is going to be interesting to see if anyone will be prepared to take the gamble and give them millions. H.H.

The more attractive asset has to be Murray Park surely?

Ibrox must have a high upgrade bill and is probably more economic as a demolition then rebuild project which also has costs.

Now MP, assuming proper permissions exist must have a much cheaper redevelopment cost as private housing.

When you add the fact TRFC don’t actually develop young players then it would hardly be missed.

They can always out wage QoS or Falkirk.

Oh just hearing SSB picking up on Twitter re ownership and old Shug back tracking at rate of knots for a pensioner.

  10. Just read Mrs Budge’s statement following last Friday’s events.

In a nutshell, for Mrs Budge the weather and extenuating circumstances were main contributors. Not exactly a hard-hitting statement by the HoM owner who is waiting for a very active investigation into events to take place.

She is surely aware of at least one serious mob assault on HoM fan(s)? It was televised for Pete’s sake. The man was hospitalised. What investigation does she need? I wonder if Hearts’ fans are content with this?

  13. I for one am not surprised by the Hearts statement today. They are an obnoxious club and support IMO.

I have said it before and will say it again,Bhoycott any game in their midden. They hate us,don’t give them a penny of your money.

  14. For anybody interested, here’s a summary of what she says. Sorry if it’s already been done.

Mrs Budge starts with outline of prematch safety procedures.

All parties agree recent history and intelligence indicated no trouble expected.

Official report now received, reviewed in detail by AB and discussed with own people.

SPFL rep says events not fault of TRFCL. HoM Security Officer agrees

    HoM FC agree.

    Questions then grouped for answers.

    1. Weather-related heavy demand made it impossible to grit roads around Ibrox.

2 The game started because ground staff said under-soil heating would deal with snow covering as game progressed.

    3. Match Commander advised by Security Officers and faced with situation at Ibrox decided not to delay kick off.

    4. Normally away fans would have had egress delayed, but in bad weather conditions it was decided to let fans out quickly. Is there a right answer?

    5. She understands segregation in stadium was adequate

    6. She understands segregation leaving Ibrox was not adequate. Alternative measures will be insisted upon at the rearranged fixture.

    7. Incidents prove security provisions at car and bus parks were clearly inadequate. Weather was a contributory factor. Police Scotland very seriously treating and investigating. Mrs Budge to discuss with them in detail before next fixture.

A full and very active investigation into incidents outside Ibrox is underway headed by a DI. HoM FC and TRFCL will co-operate.

Extenuating circumstances were to blame for a potential showpiece becoming very frightening for many.

AB will discuss with Police Scotland every detail in advance of replay: segregation inside and outside, car park entry and exit. Not a good experience for anybody she says.

Anger her teams cousins. After all when the huns go tits up who are they likely to go and support?

I don’t belive that Mp will be available for housing anytime soon.i belive that it is actually on a long lease possibly for 50 or 100 years from one of the private schoolsor rugby clubs in Glasgow .

The site was originally green belt and many were ( maybe not ) surprised at the planning consent given to Murray for the development bearing in mind it’s green belt status and the fact that it also lies on a flood plain .

The poor road access and the impact on local schools and other infrastructure items should a major housing development be granted would also kibosh any planning application -well it would normally … Hh

  22. Winning Captains & Fellow (M) ad men – can we forgive you when you DO know what you do?

Are you prepared for a backlash?

Are you aware that by wilfully drawing the Celtic name into this pool of shit, it will become tarnished as the mess is portrayed as an Old Firm ‘dust up?

If there is a tragic event between the publishing on 26th and the aftermath of the match on 1st February – will you accept your share of the blame.

The timing of this advertisement is provocative, and in my opinion unnecessary and dangerous – can you honestly say that these elements seem to make it more attractive to you.

This is a selfish act and if there is a loss of one life, however tenuous the link to this ad, the damage to Celtic’s reputation worldwide will be much greater than the humiliation currently surrounding the “Rangers” brand.
