Why we can attract top French youth talent

962

Olivier Ntcham stole the show with a stunning free-kick goal for France under-21s against Bulgaria last night. Celtic’s midfielder came on as a 75th minute substitute, not long after teammate Moussa Dembele was subbed off.

Olivier has been capped by France at every age group since under-16. It is a mark of the expectations we have for him, and Moussa, that they are exposed to the demands of the Allianz Arena, despite Olivier having less than 50 senior games under his belt, and Moussa having less than 100.

At similar stages of their development, expectations of Kenny Dalglish and Henrik Larsson were considerably less, while contemporaries, Stuart Armstrong and Tom Rogic took years to reach peak form.

What we have seen from Olivier, and to a lesser extent Moussa, is a glimpse of their potential. Playing for Celtic, with its unique mix of expectations to win every domestic game, indifferent domestic opponents, and regular Champions League football, provides a great opportunity to polish potential into the finished article.

Young players will get first team opportunities in less demanding games, while 18-year-olds like Anthony Ralston will be asked to get stuck in against PSG. I doubt any other club can offer a better environment to develop talent, which explains why we can attract Moussa, Olivier and Odsonne Edouard.

  1. Good luck to all those attending the hoot!

You’ll all be glad I’m not there to organise it. I’m currently in the Algarve and decided to take a trip to Sagres and Cape of St Vincent. I was looking forward to a wee trip round Sagres brewery but when I got there I found that the beer is actually brewed just outside Lisbon -about 200 miles away!

At least now I know what I’ve always suspected – I couldn’t organise a loss up in a brewery! Now, that’s a sobering thought!

If ever you’re in Lisbon and looking for somewhere cheap clean and central,no frills whatsoever,I’ve got the very place.

And just below the Fort of St George,so you never get lost on the way home!

  3. Last night –

    Sweden 1 -Italia 0 .

A game so bad -I struggled to watch it — I fell sleep at half -woke up in time for the post mortem –

Based on what I saw –

Italy are dreadful — look clueless and utterly disinterested

Sweden were a disgrace — ” agricultural ” would flatter them . Positively Pre Agrarian . Kick / Kick / Kick . Elbow / Elbow Elbow . Dreadful Ref allowed it . Poor Verratti was kicked , kicked and kicked again before losing the Rag ,retaliating and of course being booked . He will now miss the return game at the San Siro .( Objective achieved IMO )

Good to see the befuddled old coot ( Ventura) who was mysteriously given the Managerial gig being awake enough after the game to tell a Press Conference — ” I’ve never seen a team playing like that and a Ref allowing it ”

Warm and sunny way down south — much work to do tidying up after yesterday’s wowee storm / biblical downpour .

Hope the Hooties have a Hoot !

  4. Just about to get ready for the HOOPY HOOTY !

Can someone please provide the youtube link for this song…

If I still had a wife…I would leave her for Lisa……..what a mover…one of the best dancers I’ve ever seen !

Right..time for my COLD SHOWER !

Was in the Celtic End that day – most of us had given up hope – thankfully the players didn’t

I can see the scenes now – terrific memory

  8. Fallout —

” Italy were dreadful -not only that -they succumbed to being bullied ”

    Rai radio

” Enough to make me glad I’m retired . . I’ve never seen an Italian team being prepared to take that . The likes of Scirea , Gentile and Cannavaro would have dealt with that stuff . The Ref was awful but so were we “-Andrea Pirlo

” I’ve got a broken nose — I’m surprised he didn’t book me for putting my nose in the way of a horizontal elbow ”

  10. They never fail to try to show us in a bad light. As I read BBC Scotland News on my Kindle this morning I could not believe my eyes when in the middle of an article on a ticket tout, Julien Lavallee, who ‘set up an offshore business in the Isle of Man to avoid paying tax’, the BBC had this one liner ‘Celtic shareholder Dermot Desmond’s private jet firm used tax haven…’

These people never fail to try to deflect what happened and is happening on the south side of Glasgow by writing things about Celtic that are untrue. I fail to understand why the person in charge of public relations and especially responsible for press releases never responds to these things.

Perhaps someone could raise this issue at the AGM. Unfortunately I cannot attend.

Thanks for the tipoff about morale etc in Italy dressing room.

Took Sweden at 11/4. Not known for beating the bookies these days either…

  13. Cheers SOUTH OF TUNIS and BMCUWP….

Now Bhoys…come on admit it…what about the sexy Lisa dancing to The McCoys….shes something else…as Eddie Cochran would sing !

i watch the Jackie Wilson songs very often…great man….as was poor Sam Cooke who was shot dead in a motel…and the woman who ADMITTED in Court killing him…got £30,000 compensation…work that one out ?

I’ve had 3 cold showers after watching Lisa 14/15 times.

    Right….AFF OOT……..FOR THE HOOT

Look out Gleaga..comes here I come.

  14. BMCUW –

Sweden were less than that in Italy

Much Mama Mia what’s happened to us ? stuff last night and this morning ..

Coverage is that being dire is one thing but allowing ” primitive ” dross to intimidate you is utterly unacceptable .

Game at the San Siro is far from a sell out .. Apathy reigns !

  15. SOUTH OF TUNIS

Watched the Sweden v Italy game yesterday .

    Both teams average.

The low morale in Italy will worry the country but they should not worry as FIFA will see them through.

Cant see a country of around 60 million being put out by one of around 10 million.

To big a hit in tv and advertising revenue to be allowed.

The ref was ok yesterday but the additional minutes allowed in both halves was strange.

One minute at end of first with score at 0-0 when there had been an injury stoppage of a few minutes.

The second half saw 5 minutes added with no long stoppages but Sweden ahead 1-0.

A little strange i thought and tv commentators also seemed perplexed.

  20. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on

    Alright troops !

A few weeks back someone mentioned an Irish bar in Tavira, Portugal that has the Celtic games on. Anyone recall the name, please ?

  21. Hate international breaks.

There are far to many interruption’s to the league’s calendar .

Shameless money grab by corrupt organisations.

The positive effects of our players doing well on the international stage are outweighed by the potential of injuries and next year the impact on our champions league qualification by having players at world cup.

Also playing in a poorly coached team like Scotland who have a losing mentality undermines the work of Brendan and his staff.
