Why we can attract top French youth talent

962

Olivier Ntcham stole the show with a stunning free-kick goal for France under-21s against Bulgaria last night. Celtic’s midfielder came on as a 75th minute substitute, not long after teammate Moussa Dembele was subbed off.

Olivier has been capped by France at every age group since under-16. It is a mark of the expectations we have for him, and Moussa, that they are exposed to the demands of the Allianz Arena, despite Olivier having less than 50 senior games under his belt, and Moussa having less than 100.

At similar stages of their development, expectations of Kenny Dalglish and Henrik Larsson were considerably less, while contemporaries, Stuart Armstrong and Tom Rogic took years to reach peak form.

What we have seen from Olivier, and to a lesser extent Moussa, is a glimpse of their potential. Playing for Celtic, with its unique mix of expectations to win every domestic game, indifferent domestic opponents, and regular Champions League football, provides a great opportunity to polish potential into the finished article.

Young players will get first team opportunities in less demanding games, while 18-year-olds like Anthony Ralston will be asked to get stuck in against PSG. I doubt any other club can offer a better environment to develop talent, which explains why we can attract Moussa, Olivier and Odsonne Edouard.

So as a Bhoy from Greenock I was delighted and looking forward to the league game against them.

I was right behind the goal at the very front of the Celtic end when Bobby scored – us urchins went crazy, falling of the cans we were balancing on !

I was ten but it is still one of my most graphic memories of the many in my Celtic canon.

  11. Regarding Seville .

Ten close friends ,including myself made the trip . We had 7 tickets when we entered the airport to depart , one guy qualified through the ticket scheme , others who were close to qualify ,failed but got lucky when one of us successfully gambled in the UEFA ticket ballot that he applied for before we beat Liverpool and won 6 tickets.

In an act of kindness , barely witnessed since , a successful in business Celtic fan gave my best mate and his big brother ( who had travelled from LA ) a ticket each for free before we boarded the plane ! . Nine sorted , one to go .

On the day of the match we reached Seville early , hoping to source the last ticket . Hours trailing round the city , in the intense heat to no avail . Four hours before kick off we were told of a tout selling a ticket for £500 . We agreed to meet and buy ( although just battering the tout was an option , no one wanted to risk a night in the cells when Celtic were in a European final ) the ticket which worked out at £50 each , so the deal was done .

I’m still thankful that walking round the city kept us far more sober than any visits to games in earlier rounds . I’ve never saw so many Celtic fans buckled by a combination of drink and heat that was utterly intense .

I can still recall so many of the highs and terrible disappointments during that game very clearly . I love having a session with good company , especially prior to a big game but generally keep it to a level that won’t spoil the enjoyment of the game . This maturity lark took a long time to kick in , but better late than never .

Who needs the bevy when Celtic supply the biggest high ?

  12. 8 out of 11 of Irish Team on Yellow Cards, 7 out of Denmark on yellow.

  14. DENA29-I know it’s a running joke:-)).He’s 77 and we sit up in 416 so we do have to take our time ,absolutely nothing to what you go through to get to a game though
