Why we can attract top French youth talent

962

Olivier Ntcham stole the show with a stunning free-kick goal for France under-21s against Bulgaria last night. Celtic’s midfielder came on as a 75th minute substitute, not long after teammate Moussa Dembele was subbed off.

Olivier has been capped by France at every age group since under-16. It is a mark of the expectations we have for him, and Moussa, that they are exposed to the demands of the Allianz Arena, despite Olivier having less than 50 senior games under his belt, and Moussa having less than 100.

At similar stages of their development, expectations of Kenny Dalglish and Henrik Larsson were considerably less, while contemporaries, Stuart Armstrong and Tom Rogic took years to reach peak form.

What we have seen from Olivier, and to a lesser extent Moussa, is a glimpse of their potential. Playing for Celtic, with its unique mix of expectations to win every domestic game, indifferent domestic opponents, and regular Champions League football, provides a great opportunity to polish potential into the finished article.

Young players will get first team opportunities in less demanding games, while 18-year-olds like Anthony Ralston will be asked to get stuck in against PSG. I doubt any other club can offer a better environment to develop talent, which explains why we can attract Moussa, Olivier and Odsonne Edouard.

Celtic have rubbished claims online they doctored a picture of Kieran Tierney to remove a poppy he was wearing while playing for Scotland against the Netherlands.

Tierney captained his country on Thursday night and like the rest of his team-mates, wore a poppy on an armband in tribute to the fallen soldiers.

But the picture Celtic used to salute the 20-year-old rising star didn’t have the symbol showing.

This led to accusations the club had photoshopped the image.

One Rangers fans’ account wrote: “Cannot believe they’ve deliberately tried to airbrush the fact that he is wearing the poppy.”

Another tweeted: “@celticfc hope you are ashamed of your club photoshopped the poppy off Tierney’s Scotland top last night utter disgrace of a club @ScottishFA should hammer you for this.”

The club’s official account refuted the claims, saying: “For clarity this image was not doctored, only cropped. We are extremely proud of Kieran Tierney and all the Bhoys representing @ScottishFA.”

The picture Celtic posted on Twitter hadn’t been airbrushed – because the poppy wasn’t in sight. It had just turned on the defender’s arm.

This is the picture the Parkhead club used, and it HASN’T been doctored.

And, as you can see in the above images, there are plenty of pictures where the poppy is visible and where it is not.

Tierney won plaudits for another composed display – this time at centre back. Scotland lost the Pittodrie friendly 1-0.

  7. Mike In Toronto……No chance mate , born and raised in the Garngad , St Rochs, then St Mungos

First game at Celtic Park when I was about 6 or 7

  8. Being a 1950’s child, I was brought up thru the years listening to all kinds of music etc like many others of course.

Part of that upbringing and my youth ( aged around 19)…Disco was Da Thing.

I have just recently found the following Group and songs by accident on Youtube…and I love it.

In 1979, there was a Disco song by “Sheila” (B) ?…..called “SPACER”…it was a big hit at that time.

Fast forward to 2001 ( I am led to believe)…and a Swedish Trio called ” ALCAZAR” “Adopted” the very same tune “SPACER”…but with very different lyrics, and called the song ” CRYING IN THE DISCOTHEQUE”….and it’s superb in my opinion.

ALCAZAR also did likewise with some other earlier tunes including another excellent one called ” THIS IS THE WORLD WE LIVE IN”….which I am racking my brain to remember who played the original music….Peter Gabriel maybe ?

Anyways, ALCAZAR in 2001 had one Guy and two STUNNING Girl singers. Both Girls are feckin goergeous in my opinion, but I especially enjoy watching the Blonde girl called “TESS”, when ever I watch ” CRYING IN THE DISCOTHEQUE” video on youtube ( 14/15 times a day)…….

I think I’ve fallen in love ….yet again.

I can’t do the Link to either song, could someone be so kind as perhaps some others on here may enjoy the Songs….oh and the Stunning ALAZAR Girls ?

I was born in Castle St, TOONHEID in 1955….in a hoose up a close.

Many of my family also came from the Garngad.

    I remember in the early-mid 1980’s playing against Garngad Hibs…..they were durty bassa’s !

I took it upon myself to “tackle” one or two of them with the same gusto….they didn’t like it back.

When some of them got a bit angry with me during the “Game”..I was quick to advise them that I too was a TIM….and loved their Hibernian Strip…I think that saved me from a right doing that night.

  16. Good morning all from a dry, clear and pretty chilly East Kilbride with only a light breeze for company. A lovely looking morning for ParkRun #196 as I continue my efforts at trying to break the 22½ min barrier for the wee 5K which I’ve not managed to do since April.

A day of painting the living room (It’s International Break!) follows so rather jealous of all you Hootenayers – enjoy your day!

Thank for that link for Artur’s final game for his country.

Watched his first against Artmedia and even during the warm- up I thought Wow- we’ve got a great goalie at last.

We’ve been very fortunate with our Polish Celts…… any decent centre halfs worth considering?

    CBN, great article.

I usually suffix that statement with “as always” but I’ve decided that somewhat detracts from the brilliance of each article. So I’ve decided to refrain.

You say you are unlikely to repeat that type of article. True. But I sure hope you are supplementing it for a while longer.

    SCANIEL

I can still remember Dariusz Wdowczyk’s free-kick against Arsenal. Doubt I’ve seen a ball hit harder. Sure it was in the centre-circle when he hit it!

See you next time, hopefully. Btw,I think you’re a stick-on for the Ibrox job, what with your experience of managing old donkeys!!!

  21. To all the Bhoy’s heading to the Hoot have great day ! Ayrshire Tims don’t miss your trains ! Unfortunately i can’t be there but hopefully next time , TIMSRGR8 Welcome to CQN
