Wigan first to drop in football’s great structural change

510

Wigan Athletic yesterday were the first to fall into administration in the world’s most financially vulnerable league, the English Championship.  They were mid-table and on a winning streak, so if they can find the money to complete their remaining games, there is a chance they will avoid relegation, despite the points deduction.

With former owner, Dave Whelan, still alive and still rich, they are probably better placed to recover from this than most in the Championship, but I doubt Dave is prepared to cover years of contracted losses to fill the bank accounts of players.

If the great structural change in football that Celtic fans have been waiting on for decades does not happen in the months to come, it never will.

Most players in the English Football League have had their wages deferred, while some have been furloughed.  Taxes have also been deferred, so the crunch lies ahead.

I am not a Mike Ashley fan but the manner in which he trolled yesterday Newco was spectacular.  Sports Direct’s Facebook page announced Newco strips would be available exclusively from the retailer they continually believe they were rid of.  The club statement that followed was an excruciating attempt to confirm nothing while not contradicting a word of the Sports Direct statement.

  1. Surely it’s good for some supporters to come on here ,and ask not all team or football related stuff .Maybe some would like to see another extension added on inside the stadium Food outlets inside and outside ,the Hotel Ticket Office Superstore Director’s not doing what Celtic Fans ask them to stand up for players fans etc also all the rich fans who seemingly support Celtic but don’t put a thin dime into the club,Just another thing it took from 1998 till 2019 for that shambles off a main stand to have a lick of paint ,and if any one of you care to have a look outside the stadium look at the rust that is gathering on the beams and girders ,I await reply’s,oh ps getting them things done would interfere in Peter Lawells bonus and we can’t have that 🧤🧤

You have always been critical of amenities in main stand and people who have tickets there agree

Hebcelt was going on about people who moan and gripe from afar without actually contributing to the bonus

  3. Timbhoy2, I agree that the main stand has been needing a lot of attention for years, I got a ticket for the Front and couldn’t believe that it didn’t seem much different to when it opened

  4. Timmbhoy2 So your contention is the rust on the girders is as a result of making sure PL’s bonus is not interfered with ? Can’t wait to see your evidence, if of course it’s your opinion well that’s a different matter. H H Hebcelt

I went to St. Augustines in Milton 1971-76.

When was the visit from the Edinburgh school?

  6. Came up for a christening a couple of seasons ago and got a ticket for the main stand. Toilets and catering facilities leave much to be desired – to say the least

  7. HJ, I was at there 77 to 82, from memory it would have been around 80 as that would be when I started as a Prefect, gave me access to staying inside during breaks and a great room to ‘miss’ a few classes in 👍

  8. Blantyre TIM So I moan a bit well what do contribute on here at least I get many responses that says to me that many supporters agree with me ,and its what I see do want to pay top dollar to be served up third rate catering, whom I may add they know how to charge ,and if there are any Celtic Women Supporters on here ask them what they think off the amenities inside Celtic Park ,and you know what it’s good to moan now and again not like some who seem to think everything is ok 🧤🧤🧤

  9. Just catching up . St Stivs thanks for publishing the Greenock Lisbon photos. I am in the Charlie Tully photo taken outside the Lisbon Airport. I am the handsome young ghuy with glasses on the front left hand corner of the photo. Wonderful beginning to a memorable day.

  10. A little bit of personal stuff from me, feel free to scroll on by.

My dad who was the most honest person that I’ve ever met, did my mums head in 😀, he would go back to a shop if he had the wrong change a week later, was on holiday a month before my 21st and on a visit to Knock and collapsed and died at the place that people would go to pray for Miracles.

I must admit that I got really angry with the thought that this was a place of pilgrimage and my memory would always be of my dad.

I’ve visited on a few occasions and never really got anything from it until in my 50’s I became a dad myself and took my son to the place his grandad died, wee bugger pissed all over me and couldn’t help myself from laughing and crying as my dad would have loved that moment

  11. The main stand is the oldest part of the stadium. Over all these years and a chance to relocate every renewal why stay there. Move. Ffs .

I visited Knock many years ago and it left me pretty cold , no idea why , I went to Fatima when in Lisbon for 50th anniversary celebration and found this more spiritually rewarding

Only visited Carfin grotto last week for first time that I can remember and I stay not far from the site

I’m glad your son made the trip back to Knock memorable for the correct reason

I love them pictures. I zoom into the faces and the people there look like their descendants that I know today.

It was a wonderful find. Made my day.

  14. I thought about this a few times. For those who went to Lisbon, casually meeting Tully or mister mcgrory, having lived through the drought years, it must have been something else.

And to have you lead us in celebration of holy mass the morning of 25th 50 years later was a blessing

  16. Thanks BlantyreTim, my dad died in 85 at the age of 67 and I’ve been over a few tines since. He was based in Bundoran for his holiday and the people there were wonderful to both my mother and me and I it holds a special place for me

The main stand was state of the art in it’s day but then so were the pyramids.

  18. Maybe the board members should take a walk round the outside of the stadium.

Walking up the Celtic way is fine and dandy, but some of the other surfaces are a total mess.

Pains me to say it, but something needs to be done.

    Hail Hail.
