Wigan first to drop in football’s great structural change

Wigan Athletic yesterday were the first to fall into administration in the world’s most financially vulnerable league, the English Championship.  They were mid-table and on a winning streak, so if they can find the money to complete their remaining games, there is a chance they will avoid relegation, despite the points deduction.

With former owner, Dave Whelan, still alive and still rich, they are probably better placed to recover from this than most in the Championship, but I doubt Dave is prepared to cover years of contracted losses to fill the bank accounts of players.

If the great structural change in football that Celtic fans have been waiting on for decades does not happen in the months to come, it never will.

Most players in the English Football League have had their wages deferred, while some have been furloughed.  Taxes have also been deferred, so the crunch lies ahead.

I am not a Mike Ashley fan but the manner in which he trolled yesterday Newco was spectacular.  Sports Direct’s Facebook page announced Newco strips would be available exclusively from the retailer they continually believe they were rid of.  The club statement that followed was an excruciating attempt to confirm nothing while not contradicting a word of the Sports Direct statement.

  1. So P67, can we tempt you to further speculate on the outcome(s) for Celtic??

    HH jg

    Don’t sell Ntcham

    Buy a Left-footed, baby-eating, 7ft 4in Centre Half….

  3. Still don’t believe the Forster deal is 100% off.

Forster’s agent was at CP today. But to be fair, the same agency covers loads of players including Kieran Tierney & David Marshall…

  4. When I posted last night, about Ashley, and the Huns backtracking on their initial outburst, you have now probably read what I was alluding to.So many words, especially a great deal of”Exclusive”being used to actually muddy the waters more.Dont know why they bothered with the statement, far too involved with intrigue for the gullibles to understand.”Naw he hisnae”would have been enough to satisfy them.We have heard all the bluster from them before, where Ashley is concerned.Consistently ending badly for them.If I was a Hun,God forbid I would be worried. But they won’t be.Last word,I read maybe last night, that Castore had put up the money,250,000 for Superstore refurb,if true, that’s a lot of strip money gone before one is sold.

You know the semantics of the Sevco statement must be really tortured when BBC Scotland doesn’t run a story on it.

I’m sure there are seven leagues in England which form part of the pyramid. Would need a whole lot of Bury’s and Wigans before anyone comes knocking on our door.

WE have received a phenomenal response from fans desperate to secure a season ticket for the campaign ahead. We are truly grateful for your wonderful support.

Thank you to the 17,000 of you that have also signed up to the Waiting List so far!

Once again the support you have shown to the team, and the club has been staggering, and is vital to our success as we prepare for this hugely important season ahead.

The deadline for existing Season Ticket holders to renew is 5pm on Tuesday, July 7

    A friendly threat…..

Good point well made Celtic. A friendly reminder to people who label an oft-renewed season ticket as “their” seat. Pocket or walk-it. Next!

All that to say was there is no link to mike ashley and or sports direct.

  11. I joined the waiting list last week and my number was just under 10k. One week later and it’s gone up 7k to 17K WOW

  12. I think we’ve signed Jozo’s replacement today with the news that young Walsh has penned a 3 year deal.

So long as we can get an experienced Geordie keeper in goals behind him then I’ll be happy enough.

  13. With 17000 on the waiting list, anyone thinking of holding out renewing their seat until fans are allowed back in might be in for a shock.

Unless banking has changed it takes three full working days to clear a cheque. So the two which landed in my doorstep would just be cleared, I think, for Tuesday. Been paid so the timing doesn’t matter but if it was not the case I would be onto the TO explaining the situation

Anyone any idea how many ST holders have already renewed? 17,00 on the waiting list sounds incredible.

Nobody has numbers. Celtic Star claim to have a source who has told them it’s above the number announced in Mordor.

The Celtic SLO has described renewal numbers as healthy.

For what it’s worth, every SB holder I know has chosen to renew.

  16. STs…

    Huns brag of 40k….

Celtic Star say we have more….40K +

    Club say there’s 17k on a waiting list…

Do the math….sellout next week so pull your finger out as you’ll be disappointed if you’re in the ‘can pay but still pontificating’ stage…

Club are being nice and subtle today to avoid those who can, to come off the fence.

JD Group Executive Chairman, Peter Cowgill aka ???? …..Hmmm.

    Hong Kong Phooey?

  18. Just received my refund from Celtic and it has left a bad taste in my mouth. I feel pretty mean now for applying for it. Buying some shares might assuage the feeling.

Club put it out there and you were well within your right, especially in current circumstances, so don’t feel bad.

Anyway, there’s plenty of Adidas clobber to be secured….

  20. Ghislaine Maxwell has been arrested by FBI

Might fix war hero Andys medical condition

  21. Hearing Hart talks progressed. It’s putting pressure on Forster and Southampton. Don’t rule out the big man just yet. It’s not how it appears in the press. FF wants a pay off from Southampton so he can sign a long term deal with us. Southampton refusing so far. Interesting that CFC not commenting but they are comfortable as they have other options.
