Winning against nearest rivals, Charlie Gallagher, Pablo

702

I don’t recall having seen us win the league against our direct competitors. Has it happened in the last 49 years? Yesterday’s results at Tynecastle and Pittodrie ensures that a point against Aberdeen on Sunday will be enough to confirm Celtic as 5-in-a-row champions. As it stands, a 17 goal win for Aberdeen would put us under pressure for the last two games of the season…..

This will be the fourth time in Scottish football history 5-in-a-row has been achieved and Celtic’s third. The last time we were here, Hay, Gemmell, Murdoch, McNeill, Johnstone, Wallace, Auld and Lennox did a lot of the heavy work, with youngsters like Macari, McGrain and Dalglish on the periphery of the team. It was a team which would soon embark on considerable change, which is at least one thing they have in comment with contemporary Celtic.

Another member of that Celtic team, Charlie Gallagher, left the club exactly 46 years ago today, after an extraordinary decade. Charlie will be on the blog tomorrow evening from around 7pm, to reminisce on that incredible era, answer questions and give an opinion or two. These are always great sessions, tune in and enjoy.

Five years ago today we lost Pablophanque, the first guy who said, “We need to bring Kano home”. Pablo was one of the few who made Celtic Quick News what it became in the early days. He made many friends here, who miss him still, and a profound impact on our community.

    ===================================================================

SCOTT BROWN last night launched an astonishing attack on ex-Celt Andy Walker.

The Parkhead skipper’s season is over but he signed-off by letting rip at the TV pundit after the champions all-but tied-up Five in a Row.

Walker has been an outspoken critic of boss Ronny Deila and his players throughout the campaign but Brown stuck up for his gaffer and his colleagues as he hit back vehemently.

He said: “We haven’t got over the finishing line yet but, at the end of the day, people are going to criticise.

“Andy Walker is one that goes out there and manages to do it but he has never had a manager’s job or know what it’s like to be coming in here day in, day out.

    Gary Neville

“He’s pretty much a poor man’s Gary Neville.

“It’s every day, he does my f***ing box in.

“I’m sure he would say when he was playing so many years ago that there were so many coming out and slaughtering people but you think people are bigger than that and better than that and maybe stick up for the club and manager a bit more.

“At the end of the day, who cares. It’s only him.

“It’s the manager that has got it more than anyone else and it’s easy for him [Walker] sitting up there saying things, anybody could do that.

“But he [Walker] walks out the tunnel and doesn’t even look in anyone’s eyes and puts his head down.

Andy Walker in action for Celtic in 1988

“So he obviously knows he has done something wrong.

“But, yet again, the fans were exceptional [at Tynecastle] and they don’t believe what he says.

“He knows he has been in this situation before and he didn’t win that much when he was here.

“Sometimes you’ve got to take it on the chin but, maybe, he is just jealous.”

Brown, meanwhile, won’t play again for his club this term and is also set to miss Scotland’s end-of-term double-header against France and Italy.

The captain has battled through injuries in both hamstrings to help Celtic clinch the Premiership title.

Scott Brown celebrates following the match

With that job done after the 3-1 weekend win over Hearts, the 30-year-old will now sit-out the final three matches in a bid to get fully-fit for the start of next term.

Brown said: “I think that’s me done and dusted now.

“I need to close down for a few weeks and just concentrate on my fitness and try to get back because I’ve been struggling to get around the park.

“I’ve been sitting in front of the back four the past few weeks and I’ve been struggling to do that.

“You could see in the last few minutes [against Hearts] I wasn’t moving very well.

“It’s football and people play through injuries, there are a lot of players who have done that this season.

    image: http://i1.dailyrecord.co.uk/incoming/article7866812.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/JS88632193.jpg

Scott Brown celebrates with goal hero Colin Kazim-Richards

“So it’s brilliant for the lads to do that and help the gaffer out.

“But I’ve got tendonitis in both hamstrings, so I just need to chill, settle and go and enjoy my summer.

“It’s feet up, watch the lads play and, hopefully, we can get three great victories in the last three games.”

Brown will consult Gordon Strachan about the international situation and added: “I need to go and speak to him, I don’t know what will happen about that.”

However, it seems highly unlikely the national coach will push Brown into playing two friendlies with a World Cup qualification campaign starting in the autumn and the midfielder’s season looks done.

Broonie’s recent displays are somewhat explained by him revealing the injury he is carrying.

Why on earth did our management team allow him to play in his condition? Baffling. Not as though we are short of midfield cover.

Morning Bhoys turning in to a nice sunny morning here in Central Scotland.Interesting to see Broonie has been playing with an injury and will take no further part in this seasons matches. H.H.

DELANEYSDUNKEY. I think it is a measure of Broonies worth to the team that Ronny continued to play him while he carried an injury although we have plenty of midfield cover we dont really have anyone like Broonie. H.H.

Nicky did the young footballer thing at Celtic where kids tried to win a youth contract. But…there’s massive Celtic fans and those who hide their light under a bushel because it may damage their “sales”/ career. They become Partick Thistle fans in front of the cameras.

Sorry but if we are going to move forward as a team then we have to do it without Scott Brown. The fact he’s not been 100% fit is undoubtedly a factor in his recent poor form but I’m more concerned about skills deficiencies which continue to let him and the team dow. Look at last Saturday for example. It was his abject failure to control the ball in the middle of the park which led to Heart’s equaliser and that’s not the first time he’s been guilty of that. I think the new manager should be looking at bringing back Liam Henderson and giving him a chance to take over from Scott Brown whose best years are behind him.

  30. CultsBhoy can not relate to Celtic Board ambitions on or off the park on

Good on Scott Brown for sticking up for his club and manager.

He should be transitioned from player to youth coach this coming season and pass the arm band to Griffiths or Tierney. Both worthy candidates. I suspect Griffiths would give better value as Tierney is already captain mentality. It could squeeze another 10% out of Leigh and that would give you some player.

When is the serious PR re replacement manager about to unfold- in fairness CFC has avoided comment but that will change when Season ticket renewal becomes the focus. I anticipate a ‘return of the Old Firm’ campaign….

  31. Delaneys Dunky on

    Cultsbhoy

If our board promote an ‘old firm’ campaign to sell tickets, then I am out. Hope it doesn’t come to that.

  32. thetimreaper on

Efe could do a job in front of the back 4, in place of Brown. As could Armstrong. Unlikely though.

Hope it’s not the two best pals together, Biton and Stefan. That doesn’t work, as previous.

I think McGregor will drop in beside Biton with Rogic in the no10 role. Which would be a shame because McGregor links up well with Roberts.

I think it would be a mistake to get rid of Brown & Lustig at this time. I accept that both have probably seen their best days, but we need their experience in the dressing room for another year at least.
