Winning against nearest rivals, Charlie Gallagher, Pablo

702

I don’t recall having seen us win the league against our direct competitors. Has it happened in the last 49 years? Yesterday’s results at Tynecastle and Pittodrie ensures that a point against Aberdeen on Sunday will be enough to confirm Celtic as 5-in-a-row champions. As it stands, a 17 goal win for Aberdeen would put us under pressure for the last two games of the season…..

This will be the fourth time in Scottish football history 5-in-a-row has been achieved and Celtic’s third. The last time we were here, Hay, Gemmell, Murdoch, McNeill, Johnstone, Wallace, Auld and Lennox did a lot of the heavy work, with youngsters like Macari, McGrain and Dalglish on the periphery of the team. It was a team which would soon embark on considerable change, which is at least one thing they have in comment with contemporary Celtic.

Another member of that Celtic team, Charlie Gallagher, left the club exactly 46 years ago today, after an extraordinary decade. Charlie will be on the blog tomorrow evening from around 7pm, to reminisce on that incredible era, answer questions and give an opinion or two. These are always great sessions, tune in and enjoy.

Five years ago today we lost Pablophanque, the first guy who said, “We need to bring Kano home”. Pablo was one of the few who made Celtic Quick News what it became in the early days. He made many friends here, who miss him still, and a profound impact on our community.

Delaneys you beat me to it. Apparently the deal with dafabet is a great deal for supporters. Why? It’s not like they spend the money on the team. So does that mean we wil now have sponsors on the front and back of the jersey?

    How classy.

Thank god Celtic aren’t aelling their souls to the devil eh?

Oh FFS,I might have known you would not be happy.I bet you self flagellate every morning to cheer yourself up.

I heard he’s put the sponsorship income on Leicester to retain the EPL next season.

  3. I do love a good Scott Brown debate….I’ve had skelps on my arse on this one for years.

    1. Brings a certain energy and drive to the team that has a positive impact on an otherwise leadersless bunch.

    2. Is one of the most technically inept players I have ever seen.

For me both of these statements are true. Will the new manager break the cycle of making him a first pick or not ? Suspect it could go either way. Justifiably.

    And there’s the conundrum.

  4. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on

Read the Scott Brown article folks. It’s not just Walker he is setting straight.

Here’s a couple of clues for those who are still choosing to carry on with the opinionated guff:

“I’ve been sitting in front of the back four the past few weeks and I’ve been struggling to do that”,

“It’s football and people play through injuries, there are a lot of players who have done that this season”

“The captain has battled through injuries in both hamstrings to help Celtic clinch the Premiership title”

With that job done after the 3-1 weekend win over Hearts, the 30-year-old will now sit-out the final three matches in a bid to get fully-fit for the start of next term. Had to check there Broony is 30 !

To those writing the man off, I’d respectfully suggest it’s worth considering your lack of knowledge before penning ill-informed guff ? Instead look at undisputable facts when gauging Scott’s overall value to our club eg by remembering who has selected him as captain: Deila, Lennon, Mowbray and Strachan too.

Perhaps, they are all wrong too ?

  5. Neganon2

Surely maximising income on sponsorship deals is the least we could expect of the ‘business’ side of the club. It’s how that money gets used wisely is where I am more concerned with.

New scouting team and a manager accountable for choosing new players please.

  6. Proudbhoy,

It isn’t easy to get specific stats.

The team itself isn’t doing so well but he has started most games for Start. He hasn’t ever been red carded, obviously that will change in Scotland pretty quickly.

    BIG WAVY

Not much I can add to that;a conundrum, right enough.

He seems to bring more to the party than his talents suggest.

  8. My friends in Celtic,

Sponsorship is part and parcel of modern football. Especially In Scotland , we need the best possible deals that are a good fit and will optimise income.

Alcohol and gambling are a good fit for the adult football supporter. Whether we agree or disagree. It ticks the necessary boxes and golden rule of coherent activation policy. Put simply most of us drink and gamble or are associated with drinkers and gamblers. For many the match day experience is enhanced by both.

Well done Celtic. Of course we can never please everybody, but that is life.

    HH.

    PETEC

Sheer is 6’5″ which DBBIA will translate into foreign for us later. I think that makes him our tallest non-defender ever.

And likely to be still growing!

Any butchers out there like to supply him some raw meat?

  10. As a point to point lover, I can tell you a little secret about J P McManus. He has his high flying trainers and horses at all the big meetings. He loves his racing. However, all around Ireland he has small trainers, full-time/ part-time, who would be training a pointer for him. He keeps a great interest in the grass-roots of racing.

Maybe WITS could throw even more info.

You could be at a point meeting and see the likes of Tony Martin or one of Mullin’s guys checking out horses, Great way to spend a day out.

    Anyway,Lee POTY, and Kieran YPOTY.

    Couldn’t be bad to it.

  11. Delaneys Dunky on

    Big Wavy

I think Broonie’s drive and leadership skills outweigh his technical ability, when he is fully fit.

Think you exaggerate his technical inability though. Agree there is a Scott Brown dichotomy problem to solve for the new manager.

  12. Big wavey. I dont mind that we get the sponsorship but we won’t invest it in the team. Lawwell must go. He has presided over disaster.

  13. So this money does not go towards the team?.So ,in your opinion,we are the only club in the world who survives through ticket sales only?.We pay everything through the money coming through the turnstyles, right?.

To others moaning about our sponsors, give it a rest. You want money into the club, you get it,then start moaning about who is putting it up.Its always been the Alcohol and Tobacco, and Gambling, the latter more recently, who have pumped money into sports.

Nobody cared, people drank, smoked, gambled, why not, until the PC brigade moved in.

If Celtic announced a multi million sponsorship deal with Guinness tomorrow, that I am sure would be met with the majorities approval. What a double act that would be,Guinness and Roy Keane. How Irish would we be?.

  14. TBJ has no trust in the PLC on

Imho we used to have a big clumsy captain who wasn’t much of a player but a good captain-Roy aitken

Scott has more skill than Roy… slightly less effective leader

  15. NEGANON2 on 2ND MAY 2016 11:39 AM

Turkeybhoy at least I’m not as permanently angry as you my friend.

Oh FFS.You have no idea the meaning of “Irony”,do you?.

  16. Turkeybhoy Celtic are more reliant on turnstile fodder than just about any other major club. And the money is not invested in the team. We are told it’s now reinvested in the club. Like big bonuses paid for failure.

  17. Delaneys / Bobby,

Agree fellas and I guess when off-form physically then naturally his touch is even worse so I am guilty off too many screams at the telly in the last few weeks at another misplaced pass. Don’t think he has the discipline to play this holding midfielder role in front of back four and a Victor clone would be a must-have purchase for us. Where that leaves Brown (outside of the middle) and technically not a winger is an interesting one.

  18. thetimreaper on

The current Magners deal is worth £1.5m a season. The previous deal with Tenants was worth the same. Dafabet pay Aston Villa £5 per season at the moment.

  19. Neganon2

Our obsession with collecting an army of mediocre midfielders suggests to me that we do. Our problem being we seem unable to spend the investment on the playing side wisely.

Hopefully another sea change we will see with the new regime.

  20. Alcohol and Gambling. You couldn’t make up. Imagine promoting these 2 blights on Scottish society. Says everything about PLC Celtic, everything! por cierto.

  21. thetimreaper on

    Philboy

Haha I meant £5m of course. Although to be fair based on performances a fiver sounds about right.

  22. BOBBY,

It can’t be easy for big Sheer/Ajer playing in that team, especially as he is moving. If he is Captain material then Brilliant, we need as many of them as possible. Kieran and Erik are definitely able to take on that role if required to do so.

  23. Maybe all Celtic supporters should stop smoking, drinking alcohol, swearing, they should also eat healthy and follow a decent fitness regime.

    Communion on a regular basis.

    There, that’s that sorted.

I am in agreement with most, if not all, of the points you make in your various posts. Remember there are quite a few of us who are positive about Celtic but the strident tones of the Negatrons makes it seem as though there are more of them.

The opinions of some are simply emotions verbalised. No basis. No depth. No use.

    Since Brown returned from injury,

Last 15 matches, 9 wins (including Morton and EK), 5 draws and 1 defeat. Average goals scored per match 1.73.

    During spell injured,

10 matches, 6 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats (Ajax and Motherwell home), average goals scored 2.9.

    Just saying.
