Words are easy, so are actions

After yesterday’s discussion on values, what we’re all about and where we’re going, today’s announcement by the Foundation that they will have a badge day at the Dundee United game on 11 May is something that requires us to step forward and do something about.

“Volunteers will be in place at all turnstile areas and supporters will be asked to make a donation of minimum £1 in return for a badge, which illustrates the new Celtic FC Foundation crest.  All monies raised on the day will support our work challenging homelessness in the Glasgow area.”

I’m going to volunteer.  You should too.  It will mean getting to the game a wee bit earlier but it will also mean you can look those values we all preach in the eye.  Words are easy but on this occasion, so are actions.  Let’s do it.

I’ll find out how you volunteer and report back soon.

    I’m Neil Lennon ( tamrabam)

In 1995 ( first season back at Celtic Park I applied for 1 Adult + 2 Jr Onlookers in FS1 (which was the first of the Family Stands at the time)

The Season Ticket Application Form stated that the ‘Family Section’ season tickets were for the section rather than an actual seat.

It was explained that this would facilitate purchase of extra tickets for friends etc who would then be able to find seats where they could sit together as a group…

When the Season Books arrived it became apparent that something had changed as seats were allocated.

I queried with the ticket office and was told that the police or perhaps Health and Safety had stipulated that individual seats had to allocated.

It was all academic at the time as the stadium was a complete sell out leaving no extra tickets.

You may have missed my post, but when referring to BB05 and the Ireland jersey, he was posting in response to someone stating that he felt sick when a Celtic player put on a Scotland jersey.

His response to an anti-Scotland post has been brought up here many times with no reference to the original poster.

    ………………………………………..

Two wrongs don’t make a right. While I disagree with both viewpoints, I am particularly gobsmacked by any celtic supporter saying that the sight of a Scottish born Celtic player pulling on the jersey of the ROI made them ‘physically sick’. That’s a hard one to explain away.

  7. Libertadores Round up

    ++++++++++++++++

    Bom dia

I was out shaking hands and kissing babies last night, so only snatched a glimpse of last night’s games. Here’s a quick resume of how they turned out.

    Strongest 2 Atlético-PR 1

Strongest by far and away the better team in this match which was run by experienced striker, Pablo Escobar and little (think John Colquhuon size) Nelvin Soliz in midfield. This pair terrorized a static Parana defence all night and I always think it tells you that something is not defensively right when you see a keeper (in this case Paranã’s Everton) having to consistently leave his six yard box to clear danger.

Parana scored though a simple Adriano tap in, but really weren’t at the race in this one.

Strongest now go into the runners up pot in the last sixteen.

    Velez Sarsfield 1 Universitario 0

Velez appeared to huff and puff their way through this one (it was 0-0 at half time). However, both regular strikers Pratto and Zarate (arguably the best strike pairing in Argentina, at the moment) were rested in this match. Velez’s goal eventually came from a penalty (he later missed one) taken by veteran striker, Nanni.

Velez now in the winner’s pot and, dependent on result of Arsenal/Santos game Thursday, maybe the No.1 seed for the last sixteen. Universitario away home to regroup and regather.

Cerro Porteño 3 Dep. Cali 2

Disappointed I missed this one, as apparently it was a cracker of a match. Cali went at Cerro from the outset, twice taking the lead. However, Cerro inspired by a fervent home support, clawed back into the game eventually sealing it with a well taken goal from Julio dos Santos.

Cerro now go into the winners pot for the last sixteen. Cali, continue their poor form and unlikely to feature in next year’s Libertadores.

    O’ Higgins 0 Lanus 0

Although no goals this was a match played at a consistently high tempo, with O’Higgins by far the superior team. However, Lanus keeper Agustín Marchesin was in outstanding form and handled everything O’Higgins could throw at him, including a penalty stop with 2minutes left on the clock.

Lanus now in the runners-up pot for the last sixteen. O’Higgins now back to chasing Colo Colo in the Chilean Clausura.

Three more groups decided tonight, will throw up a preview in a wee while.

  12. Over..and...Over on

Can anyone guess the writer of the below article? Only one clue, the person you are looking for is more than 6 years old.

IF Ally McCoist had done something which Jock Stein had done before him, that would be acceptable, wouldn’t it?

After all, big Jock’s determination to succeed for Celtic was second to none.

And he would rather have ripped his heart out than bring discredit on the club.

So let’s revisit the night of October 23, 1971.

Celtic were halfway through winning the original nine in a row and had become the first British club to win the European Cup.

Stein had been sounded out about Manchester United. There were even overtures from Rangers.

On October 23 Celtic played Partick Thistle in the League Cup Final and many considered the outcome a foregone conclusion.

But with 36 minutes gone, Stein’s Celtic trailed 4-0.

It was so seismic BBC’s Grandstand, the Sky Sports News of its day, refused to read the result out until it had been verified.

Kenny Dalglish pulled one back with 20 minutes to go but it was to be the last goal of the game.

The Jags had won their first major trophy for half a century and, 43 years later, the memory lingers on.

And what has this got to do with McCoist?

That night, Big Jock had a sing-song.

He had gone spare in the dressing room and accused his defeated side of lacking the correct attitude.

But later Jock joined family and friends in the Marie Stuart hotel across from Hampden.

He carried in what was described as a “big wally water jug” and told the revellers that would have to do in place of the trophy.

That brought the house down and Stein, an accomplished singer, was the life and soul of the party.

His party piece was a rendition of Auld Scots Mother Mine, as opposed to McCoist’s romp through the back catalogues of Meat Loaf and Bruce Springsteen.

The moral to the story concerns perspective.

You might argue that, had Stein been prey to social networkers with phone cameras and an investigative media, he would have been receiving the flak that engulfs Rangers’ manager.

Or you could say he was trophy-laden and widely respected in a way that has eluded Ally.

Or maybe you could simply ask when drowning your sorrows with a beer and a belt at the karaoke became the cause of outrage?

How many Rangers supporters have taken to the drink as a form of anaesthetic when defeat has been too painful to bear?

It’s practically a national pastime, for heaven’s sake.

Rangers fans are entitled to their embarrassment and disgust in the wake of defeat by Raith Rovers and their manager’s record in cups is poor.

Saturday’s Scottish Cup semi-final against Dundee United is a test of credibility for McCoist.

He has been accused of not knowing what he’s doing when it comes to team selection and tactical change.

If there are calls for his head, that goes with the territory.

But his judgment ground is the pitch and not a hospitality suite.

Having a gregarious personality and being a good chanter are not grounds for dismissal.

Otherwise Ally will create a distinction no one else in the profession will ever attain

Glad to see that there appears to be a wee bit of rapprochement developing between the YES & NO camps. There should be no animosity among guys who are all Celtic men, no matter on which side of the debate our flawed reasoning leaves us.

There is no right or wrong in this one.

Issues in our different lives will have conditioned us to one side or the other.

I hope none of us falls out with his Celtic brothers over something about which most of us feel so passionately.

Justafan, I think the whole summer of 2012 and into the FTT and Nimmo smith fiasco centred on operation protect the titles. I think there was a great deal if negotiation over Rangers punishment and or subsequent league starting position. I believe Celtic wanted titles removed and a tier 2 start. Lots of other things got in the way including Spivs and Masons.

    Group 7

    ———-

    23:45 Bolivar (8pts, +1) v Emelec (6pts, -4)

A draw good enough for Bolivar. Emelec needing a victory.

A 4-3 home win against Universitario (the Bolivian one) on Saturday keeps Bolivar in the chase domestically. However, the fact that a draw is all they need tonight is weighing heavy in their minds and quotes from Uruguayan striker, Ferreira such as ”The fans need to be patient”. “Sometimes we like to win the ball and play it back to midfield” may be indicative of how they are thinking. Bolivar are full strength and boosted by the return of right sided midfielder, Walter Flores from injury.

In top spot in their domestic tournament, Emelec had a convincing 5-1win at the weekend. However, in seven visits over a forty eight year span, Emelec have never won in Bolivia (best result was one draw). However, manager Gustavo Quintero, himself an ex-star of Bolivian football, has a full strength squad available and reckons the tie will be won by ”the team that makes the least mistakes”. Personally, I think he’s playing mind games.

Prediction: (a nervy) HOME WIN (60%)

    23:45 Flamengo (7pts, +1) v Léon (7pts, +2)

All to play for at the (sold out) Maracanã

Flamengo contained Vasco to a 1-1 draw on Sunday’s Carioca State Championship final and now know that a draw next Sunday will see them lift the trophy. However, things not as simple here tonight. ‘mengo will be encouraged that several of their injury listed players are available and will be relying heavily on the experience of captain, Leo Moura at RB, Andre Santos (and, if he passes a fitness test, Elano) in midfield and striker, Alecssandro (a stocky wee guy who has that knack of appearing at the right place at the right time) to pull them thru this one. However, mengo’s biggest asset (or drawback if things go Pete Tong) will be the crowd.

Currently wallowing in eleventh place in the Liga Mx, Léon had a disappointing 1-1 home draw at the weekend and manager Matosas’s press conferences have had a general “funeral tone” about them all week. How much of this is smokescreen remains to be seen.

Prediction : (I hate favouring ‘mengo) HOME WIN (75%)

    Group 2

    ———-

    02:00 San Lorenzo (5pts, -2) v Botafogo (7pts, +1)

Only a win is good enough for the Pope’s XI. A draw should be good enough for ‘fogo.

Sitting top of the Clausura, San Lorenzo had a fine 2-1 win at home against All Boys on Saturday. This topped of a good news week for them, when it was confirmed that supermarket giants, Carrefour have agreed to sell back the land to permit them to return to their original ground, the “Old Gasworks”. How much of this is “divine” assisted, I guess we’ll never know. SL are without suspended defender, Fontanini and midfield pivot, “PiPi” Romagnoli.

Botafogo have really struggled in this tournament and a lot of this must rest squarely on the shoulders of manager, Hungaro who, thus far, has shown a lack of invention with the use of the (albeit) limited pool of players available. However, boosted by the return of targetman “Tanque” Fererrya he will likely play a 4-5-1 to try and seal that elusive place in the next round tonight.

Oddly enough, the biggest talking point about this match has been the public transport strike which starts in Buenos Aires at midnight (the game will finish after midnight). However, this hasn’t stopped the match being a 30,000+ sell out.

Prediction : (having had to endure watching ‘fogo) HOME WIN (75%)

    02:00 Union Española (9pts, +2) v Independente del Vale (5pts, -2)

Union already qualified. Only a win good enough for IDV.

Obviously suffering a hangover after securing a place in the next round last Weds, Union took a 4-0 tanking at the weekend. However, with (local hero) manager, Jose Luis “Coto” Sierra, just having a new three year contract confirmed, things look bright for the Santiago club.

Sitting in second spot behind Emelec, IDV clocked up a solid 2-1 home win against the oddly (well I think it’s odd) named, Moshuc Runa at the weekend. Uruguayan manager, Pablo Repetto has been very guarded about talking to the press this week.

Totally unrelated – but. More info on Moshuc Runa here http://home.mushucrunasportingclub.com/.

Prediction : (because I think IDV are not that bad a side) AWAY WIN (60%)

    Group 5

    ———-

    02:00 Cruzeiro (7pts, +3) v Real Garcilaso (3pts, -3)

A must win for Cruzeiro. Garcilaso already out.

Cruzeiro, drew 0-0 with rival’s Atletico in the first leg of the MG State Championship on Sunday (and second leg next weekend) have both full backs out for this. Right back, Ceara is injured/rested up and likely to be replaced by youngster Mayke, while Samudio who has been filling the LB spot is suspended and likely to be replaced by Egídio.

Real’s defensive midfielder Edwin Retamoso has been their most consistent player so far but he’ll need to pull out a superhero performance to avoid being overwhelmed by a Cruzeiro side desperate to try and seal a place in the next round.

    Prediction : HOME WIN (80%)

    02:00 Defensor Sporting (10pts, +6) v U de Chile (9pts, -3)

A draw guarantees Defensor top spot but, probably, not good enough for La U.

One of the surprises of the tournament has been Defensor and it’s nice to see a team with eight “homegrown” players in their starting eleven. Furthermore, they have just announced the 3.4m USD transfer of rights for Giorgan de Arrascetta to Daniel Fonseca’s (Anybody know why his name familiar? It’s buggin me) agency. This money (plus 550k USD should they advance into the next stage of the Libertadores) more than balances the club’s books and gives them a base to seal contracts with other players (principally Felipe Godoy).

Although arriving with a full strength squad there seems to be a bit of a downbeat feel with the current La U team. Perhaps a lot of this has to do with their controversial 1-0 defeat to Colo Colo in last Sunday’s “superclassico” and the fact they could lose the Chilean league next weekend? However, manager Christian Romero (out of Contract at the end of this month) has promised “La U will not come to Uruguay and defend, we will attack. Attack”

    Prediction : HOME WIN (75%)
