Words are easy, so are actions

After yesterday’s discussion on values, what we’re all about and where we’re going, today’s announcement by the Foundation that they will have a badge day at the Dundee United game on 11 May is something that requires us to step forward and do something about.

“Volunteers will be in place at all turnstile areas and supporters will be asked to make a donation of minimum £1 in return for a badge, which illustrates the new Celtic FC Foundation crest.  All monies raised on the day will support our work challenging homelessness in the Glasgow area.”

I’m going to volunteer.  You should too.  It will mean getting to the game a wee bit earlier but it will also mean you can look those values we all preach in the eye.  Words are easy but on this occasion, so are actions.  Let’s do it.

I’ll find out how you volunteer and report back soon.

At least it looks like keevins was referring to partying after a defeat. Nothing to do with managing a football team thank goodness!

If Everton, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Man City, Tottenham or maybe Newcastle at a stretch come looking for Neil Lennon then I will worry. Until then the rest is just empty words.

Maybe Salmond could do a currency deal with Russia and become a Russian annex? Or would that be a Gazebo or more likely out house?

One thought I had which is on similar lines and could be used within a membership scheme was to make supporters in any area aware of others reasonably close who might travel if the cost were shared.

That could either be by bus or car. It would use post codes to establish locality and numbers in it (reminds me of the time I used post codes to see how many drugs services users there were in Dumbarton to be told “There must be a dealer in Bonhill” -I digress- but you get the idea.

Of course there would be hurdles to overcome like seeking permission to provide contact details but this could be a tick box on any purchase were addresses were supplied.

The thing is as someone born within half an hours walk if CP and latterly a driver I seldom used supporter buses so do not know if there is already something like this in place for buses but you can see the attraction for car sharing.

The thing is to use data already held or easily gathered to help make the right decisions on services to offer supporters.

Are the club working on how those of us who also serve abroad can get a Foundation badge? Particularly when some significant Foundation projects are abroad.

Someone posted a few weeks back the results of the latest poll on the referendum debate showed that the Yes vote was gaining ground. This piqued my interest and led to my looking for all the polls that have been taken since January 2012. You can see all the poll results here :

    http://ukpollingreport.co.uk/scottish-independence-referendum

    – Out of all 60 polls taken since 2012, only 1 shows a positive Yes lead. This was commissioned by the SNP and conducted by Panelbase.

    – The surveys that show the best (though still negative) results for a Yes vote tend gather the data online (Panelbase, Survation).

    – The most recent poll shows a -5 for the Yes campaign – conducted by Panelbase.

    – Of the 18 polls conducted since the start of the year, the best result for the Yes campaign have been the -5 results on 14/3 and 04/04 – both online polls conducted by Panelbase.

Make up your own mind about how you want to interpret these data. Personally, I can’t see any difference in voting intention since the start of 2012 when we had similar results from Panelbase – I see no “narrowing” between Yes and No. I also don’t see any poll other than the SNP-commissioned poll on 28/08/2013 that suggests a Yes vote likely.

I would also say that a factor here is Methodology – the data gathered online is different from that gathered by other means (e.g. surveying peoplein the street).

Thanks for your consideration and your response, there’s a point or two I would like to take issue with from yourself and the blog in general.

Like most people on here who support Independence I am not a cybernat: and we have stated this many a time, but some people on this continue use this term in a derogatory manner, full well knowing the true situation. To me that is rank bad manners and a personal insult to the people concerned.

You made some really valid and true points about the racism, bigotry and downright nastiness Catholics and Celtic fans suffer.

My Da was discrimated again and again in finding work: and so was I being kept standing at the door of my best pal’s house, as he and all the wee yins that went to the right school partied

I don’t have the answers but I really do think keeping the status quo means this horrible stain on our society will never go away.

I won’t do the politics as all the arguments have been heard

I just want us to be the same as most countries and look after ourselves: simple as that. Some fholk may think this is a simplistic view and that is their entitlement.

You also find absolutely disgusting Scottish born footballers who wear the ROI football jersey. That’s not a viewpoint that will endear you to some posters on here myself included.

That statement above was taken completely out of context, and if yoi want to revisit it I will do so.

  15. Whereas voting Yes we have

    a Daily Mail reader

Auchtermuchty twins who support a club that produces players who want to send refugees home.

Kenny McAskill- who loves the Rangers atmosphere

Roseanne Cunningham (and I had hopes she would not be such a party Loyalist)

    Christine “even things up” Grahame.

A few ex- Church o Scotland ministers

Dead easy this playground politics. Do primary one have the votes yet?

Go back the past 18 months is all that is required to see the level hatred directed towards our club.

It used to be “for every fiver Celtic spend, we’ll spend a tenner!”

Now its “for every earth shattering story about the Establishment club, we’ll fabricate 2 about Celtic!”

Time for an online petition in support of the banishment of all media w***** from Celtic park. Let them Pander to the zombies as the rest of us sit back & watch as both the zombies & the media blow away into an eternal abyss.

  22. Have volunteered for the Badge Day and already purchased my 14-15 season ticket so although a long-time lurker, maybe entitled to pose a wee question to the Celtic connoisseurs……

In season 66/67, we all know that the 1st team won 4 domestic honours and the BIG CUP on the field of Lisbon.

Question is, how did the Reserve Team fare during this season?

A stato-orientated friend has suggested that the deid club won the Reserve League, Dundee the Reserve Scottish Cup and Celtic the Reserve League Cup.

Confirmation of this would be appreciated.

I always thought we won Quizball in the glory season season but I think that came later in 69/70 with Craig, McNeill, Wallace & Cairney.

    Many thanks.

  23. I often wonder about the accuracy of “opinion polls”.

In almost 65 years living in Central Scotland I have never been approached for my “opinion” by polsters anywhere.

I was however, interviewed once by the Evening Times the week after the terrorist attack on Glasgow Airport.

We were in the queue at the check in when we were approached by a reporter and photographer who asked what we thought of the delays due to extra security checks. .

The delays, said I, were not a problem as the authorities were making extra sure we were safe.

As they thanked me I then said “Oh and I’d shoot those bastards who carried out the attack!”

We can’t print that, he said.

    And they didn’t.

But they did print my picture.

That is a private matter which I wouldn’t discuss here.

Kojo, you got it wrong on this issue. All the best.

  28. John O’Neil

Both lists were silly. Mine was deliberately so. So you have only trumped me in silliness.

I believe that there are some in the BNP/EDL who accept that the earth is not flat. There are a few Ulster Unionists who accept that the earth orbits around the sun and the moon orbits around the earth.

I will not review my acceptance of these facts because some eejits also believe them. Most of the people who founded this club and continued to support it during the 20th century were not SNP supporters or voters for Scottish Independence. There are a group of, generally younger, supporters who do believe there is some crossover in support for Independence in both countries. They may even have a majority in the 16 to 30 age groups but they are not yet the essence of the Celtic support, just a part of it like me and most of those who have gone before.

The Project Fear approach of saying a No vote makes you a Proddy Unionist Fascist is just plain daft. And a vote loser.

Fergus created a book of such a scheme in the 90’s. Our bus was listed. It didn’t do us too much good. I don;t think we got one new punter from it. We got more from the Celtic View. I think it’s a great idea though in the internet era. I would urge all Celtic supporters to use their local CSC. A great way to travel to matches and it takes the weight off the road rather than loads of cars. If the CSC is run well and is reasonably priced it’s a great way to meet local Tims as well. I have travelled on many CSC’s and always enjoyed it.

I think it is worth revisting though. Fergus knew the value of the CSC’s. They bring a lot to the club. We used to bring many kids who otherwise wouldn;t be able to travel to Paradise alone. At one point I was looking after about 6 under 13’s at home games after promising their parents I would take care of them. Cost me a fortune at the pie stall but saved me money in the long run avoiding the bookies and the boozer.
