Balance shifted to runners unconvincing with the ball

490

After so much slow build-up play this season, and so many misplaced passes, the sight of Roberts, Christie, Allan and Griffiths pinging the ball around the field was a revelation. I know the game was won before the three substitutes grabbed hold of things, and that there are vastly more challenging scenarios than Inverness at home, but the new blood have asked a big question of the incumbent three attacking midfielders.

The comfort on the ball the three substitutes brought was also contagious, Lustig looked less like a panicked fawn as he confidently back-heeled the ball into space.

The balance in the team has shifted damagingly in favour of players who can run, or perhaps jump, but who are unconvincing with the ball at their feet. So much so, Craig Gordon clears the ball up the field, instead of playing-in Bitton or a central defender, more than we’ve seen from a Celtic keeper in decades.

Christie, Roberts and Allan will not change this overnight (the latter’s misplaced pass against Ajax was costly), but they are doing enough to justify some faith in their selection. New Douglas Park should be an ideal opportunity to strut their stuff.

Probably for the best that Forrest may be off, Roberts to make the right wing berth his own over the next 18 months.

Lots of talk about Christie and Allan, both big prospects, but the one I would be most excited about is Henderson. That boy has got the lot whether hes stuck out wide or plays in his more natural role he is a better bet for us than Armstrong, GMS, or Johansen.

I share some of your reservations on recently signed players.

But was your mind not already made up about Ryan Christie? – because you didn’t see enough of him as a substitute on Saturday to have drawn such a hasty conclusion.

Most bhoys of his age have the same physique and they can’t all be Carlton Cole, and Aiden Nesbitt is so ‘lightweight’ he’s battling for a place at Partick Thistle.

The attendances are, what they are, we buy within our budget you know the game in Scotland is gubbed, and you know why.

The internet is about users telling us about ‘downsizing’ and how it’s all not the same, as when “they used to go”.

    Keep it lit.

I was one of Forrest’s biggest fans when he first broke in to the team. There is one invaluable quality for a forward that can’t really be coached – Pace, you either got it or you don’t, and he has genuine pace.

However, his injury record and his lack of dig, have lessened him as a player. I think he had better qualities in his first couple of seasons, he could cross the ball then for a start (from the right wing, which is where he belongs), and Celtic’s current formation and the way opponents line up against us in Scotland, mean that he has no pitch to use his pace. After 5 years with us, pace now seems to be his only attribute.

As a poster mentioned earlier, Europe perhaps offers a better stage for his one and only talent, but his fitness issues mean the start of the season, when we need him, is generally the time he is most likely to be injured.

On balance its time to say bye James, in my opinion he isn’t worth a new contract. However, it is his prerogative to turn the contract offered down. What he makes in the next 10 years, has to do him the rest of his life.

Squire …. much of what you say makes sense … but when has common sense ever played a part in football?

most owners and players live off the fact that fans are exactly that … fanatical …. which usually means lacking in common sense when it comes to their team ….

which allows the owners to similarly act in ways that dont make a whole lot of sense by overpaying for players … why? because, ultimately, it is the fans (not the owners) who pay for it …..

Standard stuff really for a historian….Yet,..There is a very dark side indeed, only briefly touched on.

I was talking earlier for example, about the demand for inspection of Catholic convents in mid 19th Century Glasgow…Furious petitions from the Glasgow Stock Exchange…800 signatories.

If James Forrest leaves, as seems likely, my abiding memory of him will be sitting on his erchie with his arms in the air after running into a defender, instead of tracking back.

Mind you, the odd time he did track back it was to give away a stupid foul around our box just to make it look like he was ‘defending’

    Such a waste of talent.

    Robert88,

My point was, there are plenty of folk who spend too much time condemning people for discussing their chosen subjects on here.

If they put as much effort into opening their own subjects for discussion they might attract some input from others and discuss what they want, problem is they appear to want to spend all their energy bumping their gums about what other people are talking about rather than getting on with their own preferred subject which for me means they don’t actually want to talk about anything in particular but simply want to be spoilers.
