Chasm, but Celtic should have done much better

460

For all of our dominance yesterday, you have to think there is room for considerable improvement. Passing in the first half was frequently poor, shooting throughout the game was invariably off target, and when we managed to keep it down and between the sticks, the keeper was able to read the shot. Gilks played well, but the truth is we flattered him.

Moussa Dembele grabbed all the headlines with his back-heel-flick-nutmeg-winning-goal, but I spent much of the game debating whether it was time he was rested. Against Newco last month, he held the ball up and linked play, while finding and exploiting space. Yesterday his linking was poor and he seldom found space.

The incisiveness we enjoyed watching as recently as the outing against Manchester City, was missing against Gladback on Wednesday and at Hampden yesterday.

There were also enormous positives. Jozo Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko were absolutely critical on Celtic’s grip on the game. Their positioning – when we were in possession – kept the ball flowing. They both gave us playmaker performances, and they didn’t miss a beat defensively either.

Again, just as on Wednesday, it didn’t work for Nir Bitton. When we play out from central defence like this the deep-lying playmaker role is crucial. He need to create space for us to move the ball forward, while he becomes an auxiliary defender as our full backs are so high up the field.

Stuart Armstrong came on and played higher up-field than Bitton and managed to put the squeeze on Newco.

The game reminded me of the League Cup semi-final two years ago, when Celtic subjugated an impotent Newco without scoring the volume of goals their superiority deserved. There was a chasm between the teams, which makes my belief that Celtic can play a lot better all the more interesting. Conversely I suspect that was a high water mark for Mark Warburton’s team.

The portents are good that he believes that game was a sign of progress.

As for Craig Thomson, that was self-evidently not good enough.

  12. Chasm

a profound difference between people, viewpoints, feelings, etc.:

“the chasm between rich and poor”

The chasm is readily illustrated in the amount of goals scored by both sides.

The team from the wrong side of the tracks has scored a measly 11 goals despite their big money striker signing in the summer. (No I don’t know who it was either, but BFDJ was extolling their virtues before a ball was kicked in earnest)

Meanwhile the good guys, (you know the ones with handsome appealing manly features) have put 26 in the old onion bag, as Tommy Smythe likes to say.

And of course we have played one game less.

Another telling statistic is that only 4 teams, Ross County, Kilmarnock, Partick Thisle and Dundee have scored less than them.

That surely translates to bottom 6 form?

  21. Moussa Dembele should stay at Celtic and he can become as great as Ronaldo or Raul says Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane

    By David McCarthy

FORMER French superstar admits he’s a huge admirer of the Hoops striker and believes he must continue to ply his trade in Glasgow if he wants to go to the top.

Zinedine Zidane believes Moussa Dembele can become one of the game’s all-time great strikers

ZINEDINE ZIDANE last night urged Celtic’s hottest prospect Moussa Dembele to stay at Parkhead for up to two years if he wants to become one of the world’s top strikers.

Real Madrid boss and Zidane has watched the sensational rise of fellow Frenchman Dembele – including his two Champions League goals against Manchester City and four goals in two games against Rangers – and believes Europe’s top clubs are eyeing the 20-year-old progress.

But the former World Player of the Year is advising the Celt to continue his football education in Glasgow rather than jump at the first chance to leave.

Zidane said: “Dembele is one of the most talked about young strikers in Europe at the moment but it has not surprised me at all – I always saw that.

“He isn’t just scoring goals, he is scoring big goals, important goals like the one against Rangers. That to me is always the sign of a great player.

“I have played with the greatest strikers, Ronaldo, Henry, Raul, and you knew on the biggest occasions they would win you games – and Dembele is already showing that.

“It was great for him to score his goals against Manchester City, not just for the result but for him personally.

“He will now go into games knowing he can score goals against the best clubs and that confidence does everything for a player of that age.

“I hope he can score more goals while Celtic remain in The Champions League, it will be good for him.”

Zidane knows Dembele will eventually leave the Scottish champions but the Real Madrid manager is adamant he should be in no rush,

He added: “I do understand now that the biggest clubs in Europe are being linked with him and that will be his destination eventually – but my advice now is ignore it all.

“He can progress well at Celtic, at a great club who are in Europe, and under a very good coach.

“I know his time will come but he needs to make good decisions – and his next at least one or two seasons should be with Celtic.”
