Kilmarnock 3-3 Celtic

1194

Celtic frittered away another two points at Kilmarnock this afternoon after a performance which ultimately showed depths of determination but was marked by shockingly bad organisation.

Kilmarnock’s opener in 25 minutes could not have been simpler.  An 80 yard high ball was collected on the edge of the Celtic penalty area by Heffernan, who turned and picked out the onrushing Dean Sheils, who was initially being marked by Beram Kayal but the Israeli failed to match Sheils run, allowing the Killie player time to pick his spot and score.

The home team were encouraged by the opening goal and continued to press forward.  Fraser Forster did well to turn over a blistering shot from Kelly which was destined for the top corner.  Kilmarnock’s pressure was rewarded on 40 minutes when Kayal and James Forrest stood off a ball conceding possession.  Sheils crossed for the offside Heffernan to score but the assistant referee didn’t flag so the goal stood.

Seconds before half time Charlie Mulgrew was short with a back pass and James Fowler chipped Forster to give Killie and three goal half time lead.

The first 28 minutes of the second half were miserable for Celtic as the team appeared resigned to a fate similar to the Celtic team which visited St Mirren Park in March 2010 but Anthony Stokes had other ideas.  Stokes missed what was surely the worst chance of his career early in the first half when the scores were still level, and saw a good penalty claim denied on 71 minutes, but instead of hiding he stepped forward.

James Forrest, who also stood up to be counted throughout, ran at the Killie midfield and was fouled 25 yards out.  Stokes struck the resultant free kick perfectly into the top left corner.

Two minutes later Stokes collected the ball from Ki 28 yards from goal in what seemed like a safe position but his swift turn and inch-perfect shot beat Jaakkola in the Kilmarnock goal.

Kilmarnock were now rattled and Celtic were level on 79 minutes.  Daniel Majstorovic got on the end of a long free kick at the back post and squared for Charlie Mulgrew who headed home.

Having scored three times within seven minutes and with over 10 minutes of the game remaining the Celtic support had reason to feel confident their team could collect all the points but it was Kilmarnock would should have tied up the win in the final minutes when Heffernan found himself unmarked inside the Celtic six yard box but headed over, however, the home team will be happy to have collected their first point in four games.

  1. Sabre 67,

Read your post, particularly the pointer selling Ki and the performance of Kayal vs Wanyama.

I understand your frustration, and after today’s performance I was left thinking –

    – is Kayal an average player who flattered to deceive last season

    – is he a good player not trying

    – is he a chancer working his ticket

    – is there something else going on e.g. An injury or something in his personal life.

Sadly , I don’t know the answer, but , I have reached the conclusion that whenever we get a guy who puts together a run of form and becomes a £7 /8 m player we should sell them first opportunity as they are ‘relatively’ easily replaced.

    Don’t believe me ?

Remember the £3m bid for Lee Naylor, or that £8m would probably get you 2 or 3 top drawer players on loan / bowman for a season, or , 1 player for 3 years.

    Agree with nearly everything.

As we have no money cos we are in scotland, we have to sell the players who want to be somewhere else, tis the nature of the greedy ones.

Apart from that, good stuff :>))

  3. Best western ever made?

    Unforgiven.

Four real movie stars blended together perfectly in a beautifully shot film, with a wonderful character study of William Munny holding us all spellbound.

The standard of acting and directing in Unforgiven is way ahead of earlier westerns.

    Unforgettable.

To be honest with you I don’t care what denomination Board members adhere to…

I can tell you there is a link and you can dig deeper – you’ll find it JR and TA – schoolmates, TA – PL workmates..it goes on.

what is important right now is we get fresh ideas new blood, courage, vision, ambition and some managed risk brought into the strategic thinking.

I honestly can’t believe that it is so difficult to be top of SPL at this point in history..

Interesting idea but too many forums run on this basis IMO and it could stop the flow of the blog. I love CQN just the way it is!

I’m guessing you mean The Deerhunter but that was just as much a mess too, but beautiful and brutal to look at.

If the movies are to be better than radio drama, they have to give you something to look at. Cimino can paint in his films and the set piece scenes (the Harvard speech, the dance(s), the battle, the roll call for the hit list) are better (and more expensive) than any other director, including Coppolla and Scorsese.

Look at the acting talent in Heavens Gate- Chris Walken, Micky Rourke, Brad Dourif, Jeff Bridges, John Hurt, and Joseph Cotton).

I’ve watched it more than 10 times. Sometimes with the sound down

That show was light years away from it’s time in terms of special effects.

If anyone has any doubts as to where we are and as to where we are going, look no further than the SPL table.

    3rd.

    Quite possibly 4th next week.

Forget your cultural bonds to the employees of the club.

We are in deep trouble. Deep.

Sorry. He has had time, so has Lawwell. They need to go.

Three nil down to Kilmarnock? Forget the fightback. We fought back to a draw against KILMARNOCK.

    WAKE UP.

Is the Blog safe to come on now? At least some of the posters that were on earlier in the day, disappeared after St Mirren equalised. Also a few low shots at Auldheid, which were totally uncalled for and at least one at Paul67. We all hurt on days like today but don’t turn on your own.

First half shocking, second half 30 mins poor, 15 mins good. Something is most certainly wrong at Celtic just now and I am damned if I can put my finger on it.

Is a player (or more) unsettling the dressing room? If so, get rid, regardless of who they are or who they think they are. In fact, Kayal can just sit in the stand for the remainder of the season for me, thinks he’s bigger than Celtic.

Neil, I really, really hope you have learned something today, for your sake, for my sake and for the sake of all good Celtic supporters out there.

PS, I thought the travelling support were magnificent today – happy clappers? – no chance, just great Celtic supporters, you did us proud.

I have been making the same point about the Strategy being key because the Strategy IS the key.

The break even Strategy is right but not its implementation. The glass ceiling approach has not only prevented the right quality where it matters and lesser quality where it is less so being signed, it has left a legacy of glass ceiling players going back to Loovens who cannot be moved easily and take up scarce financial resources.

Changing the implementation tactics withing the strategy is I’m afraid going to take time but it will also take longer if we keep signing glass ceiling players. I’m unsure about Bangura, he shows one or two nice touches but could be another not quite good enough, whereas with little to go on the Portuguese fella (whose name escapes me) looked a player above the glass ceiling.

As you say pay more for key positions ,make that clear to all signings who accept it as club policy when signing if they are in the lower rated positions.

Build a footballing template, do a stock take of who fits it and always sign to meet the football template not who happens to be available.

Yep,. a major point which i said myself a few days ago. It’s been getting us down for some time, but we can see it unfolding in front of us. The only other person i’ve seen echoing this concern is TET. It’s a real threat, and it’s happening due to timing: equality becoming a closer and realistic achievement over by, huns debt coming to haunt them, recession (ie shortage of work)…..it’s all coming out the woodword now. TET’s concerns are absolutely right. I speak to friends, and have a few from yon by who have done well for themselves here, and are now bringing their kids up..they are bigger than me as they insist on making this country change back to what it was….

But when we have the likes of Lambchops Findaly still poisoning the Legal sytem which is already corrupt, Christine Graheme, Salmond, et al (the list can go on eh?) i despair. But i’ll always back up the good men fighting the evils of bigotry which are stinking this country out. Apols amigo, now i’m ranting…>:((

    Next”.

Plenty of promising young players champing at the bit to be Celtic legends.

We have better young players than the Huns, and some of them have done not too badly.

Lennon has said over and over that he must produce results, blah blah blah, or he will be sacked; in fact did he not talk about this at the AGM?

We all want him to be a success. But the fact is, he is not. He is failing in the job, badly.

You cannot hide the results. You can make EVERY excuse under the sun, but you cannot hide the results.
