Neil Lennon should plan to remain in the game

438

I was disappointed to hear Neil Lennon was ‘mutually consented’ by Bolton yesterday. He picked the club up off the floor early last season, putting together a remarkable run of form which saw them talked as promotion candidates, but a reply cup defeat to Liverpool saw momentum dip. The year since has seen Bolton look like the relegation fodder they were before Neil’s arrival.

Forget all this nonsense the newspapers are throwing around this morning (anything to undermine the team ahead of Kilmarnock on Saturday), Neil’s ship has sailed in Glasgow, but he should plan to remain in the game.

The people of Bolton might not have seen him at his best, but he’s a genuine managerial talent. After a shaky 18 months at Celtic he turned a corner and became a remarkable success, crafting a team who could compete with anyone in the world.

Looking back now, I think the intensity of the Celtic job got too much for Neil. It’s a 24x7x365 life, you need vast oceans of patience, and need to be prepared to make enormous sacrifices. It’s not just about structuring a defence to subjugate wee Leo and his pals.

The Bolton job was always going to be a tall order. He picked them up in a relegation spot, there was no money to improve things, while each passing month the financial position deteriorated. He also had to find an unusual pre-match technique to address the ‘I know you’re not getting paid but how about giving 110% anyway?’ problem.

The same media who are trying to disrupt our title challenge have misread the mood music this time. If anything, they’ve focussed the support on the task in hand.

On another matter………….. I’m one of the many who have signed up to Zip Slide across Celtic Park on Easter Saturday morning in aid of the Celtic Foundation. This is a great initiative; all those who have signed up have paid event costs, so money raised goes straight to the Foundation’s mission to improve Health, promote Equality, encourage Learning and tackle Poverty.

The work the Foundation do in our name is incredible.  If you can contribute, please do so here.

Thank you.

If people dont know their history….Then politicians/historians could tell you any old twaddle.

A really good post earlier about the recent vilification of Ronny.

My feelings about Ronny are well enough known to any poor soul who has had to endure my empty vessel ramblings. Quite simply, I don’t think he’s good enough.

However, and it’s a mighty large however, the recent treatment he has had to endure has been as scandalous as it’s been predictable.

The low level, but heartfelt, grumbles from the Celtic support recently manifested in a GTF chant at Parkhead. Again my opinions are known; feel free to criticise any player or any member of the management team but keep it outside the stadium.

The MSM response to Celtic’s recent ‘monumental collapse’ has been altogether more predictable. What has surprised me has been the depths to which they’ve trolled.

The inclusion of Davie Moyes on a National radio show, and the subsequent line of questioning where he was asked about the possibility of replacing Ronny, is disrespectful in the extreme but even worse is it’s blatant attempt at undermining our journey to the Double.

Win it Ronny and stuff it down their collective throats.

Ps then I hope he goes.

I agree with most of what you say.

The MSM – a particularly apt acronym for bottom feeding creatures who are Monumentally Sad Morons – is a slightly different kettle of red herring.

I know that irrespective of fan sentiment I could up until the last week or two silenced and thwarted their attempts to create unrest/get a scoop/sell advertising space or whatever.

They haven’t and what were originally ripples from stones tossed speculatively into Celtic waters, have become storm tossed seas.

I don’t believe that the questions, insinuations or the interviews have arisen purely on scattergun speculation.

Celtic have either not strangled the serpent, failed to exercise due care and attention or worst of all possibly started a process of putting feelers out.

The night before last on Sportsound, Graham Spiers sniggered at the mention of Ronny being viewed a success even if he achieved a double. Kenny MacIntyre was even taken aback and Tom English said nothing. I immediately contacted the BBC about this infantile and scandalously unprofessional attitude to a man, his dignity and his livelihood. I asked for a retraction and an apology from the the presenters to be broadcast.

I backed Graham Spiers when The Herald treated him abysmally and I stand by that stance. But having had no response from the BBC, believe me that I would willingly see him slapped in the face by karma.

There are times, irrespective of professional disagreement when the tie that binds is stronger than the short term desire to mollify the rumblings of dissent or the scratch-yer-back relationship with hacks.

Forgetting Res 12 for the moment, for their laissez faire approach and demeaning attitude to the man who until the end of the season at least carries the simple hopes of so many thousand upon thousand of supporters, the board of Celtic Football club should be eternally ashamed.

    I won’t forget it.

    Hail Hail

If we get to 10 in a row we will look back at 5 and remember that as the critical point.

They can’t stop us. Next season they will get their reality check in the big league and hopefully we will stuff them in the cup next month. Their lack of resource will stop them challenging as 5 becomes 6 and 6 , 7 …

That’s their fear and this is their chance.

Elegant but strangely illogical analogy .

I would imagine that the sacking of Jimmy McGrory would have caused you to speak in similar fashion .

Who spoke up against the sacking of ” take it on the jaw ” Tony Mowbray or others before him.

    Where was ” principle ” then ?

Who thinks the Tony Mowbray decision was bad or unprincipled ?

Patently it was the right decision.

    It`s a simple enough assessment.

If you think that success in Scotland is to be Celtic`s ” station in life ‘ , then of course we should know our place

And that is at the back of the European football bus driven by Ronny.

I don’t think Spiers or English even understand the mechanics of football particularly well.

Celtic being at the back of the European bus has absolutely nothing to do with Ronny.

For good or bad, he is simply playing the hand he was dealt.

Celtic’s current situation is rooted in ignoring MON’s warning as to where lack of investment would lead us.

Since Seville there has been a deliberate lowering of quality on the field and expectations off it.

    Matt Stewart on 16th March 2016 7:18 pm –

Matt, I don’t believe there is a private relationship with the press from anyone in a position of power at Celtic Park. When it was an open secret at both Lennoxtown and Celtic Park that Lenny was leaving no one in the press ran with the story, now why was that?

Who was it that broke the story of Ronny joining Celtic? Hint it wasn’t the MSM.

Things like the above tell us that Celtic’s PR isn’t what it should be and relationships that would have been fostered previously are no longer.

There is also the not insignificant fact that a PR company who are retained by Sevco and also are the official PR company for the SPFL is openly planting anti Celtic stories in the press.

Even before our Euro campaign was over stories appeared in the press saying the only way Ronny could stay in his job was to win the treble.

Being a winner Ronny stated from day 1 of the season that his goal is to win the treble and believes Celtic should aspire to this every season. That’s what winners do set high goals for themselves but the MSM have tried to use this against Ronny and unfortunately a proportion of our fans have also.

When RC put us out the cup cue the multitude of negative headlines in MSM, unfortunately for them there has been little sign from within Celtic Park that Ronny was to be relieved of his duties while top of the league and in the semi finale of the major domestic cup competition. In the last couple of days they have increased the negativity and openly interviewed unemployed ex EPL managers and touting them for a position that isn’t vacant. To their shame these mediocre unemployed failures have responded exactly in the way the media want them to.

If there is one good thing to come from this then look no further than WC’s post at 7:40pm, Celtic fans are increasingly coming together to support the team. Whether they do or not though I still believe we’ll win the league, I also believe we’ll stuff Sevco. It would be nice to do it without listening to so much negativity coming from the Celtic support though.

  24. A gentleman by the name of Anthony Stokes has scored both goals. We should try & sign him.

  25. Pep was waxing lyrically earlier this week about how much he admired Bonucci (a hint! hint! about moving to City – even though he’s 29) – think he’s just stuck £10M on the asking price.

Question – is Pep the genius everyone thinks he is?

    Bayern to win @ 8/1- to draw @ 4/1.

    Hmmmm!

  26. Morata contrived to put the ball over the bar when he only had the GK to beat.

7 yellows so far – a red bound to follow.

  27. Macjay,

I’ve probably misunderstood your thrust, but that’s only to be expected as my mind wanders towards confusion.

    Jimmy McGrory ?

    Tony Mowbray?

Irrespective of their performance in hugely different circumstances, I (that’s me) would never have condoned any form of ad hominem attacks or the undermining of their dignity.

I agree that Ronny’s number has probably been called and my own point of view is that is the right call. I would have made it earlier….but sadly they didn’t ask. I would also have put a rocket up the backside of the first hack to question his position.

Action this day? Fine. End of the season? Fine.

Jimmy McGrory was manager in name only. I used to play keepie up outside Celtic Park when he was arriving at the ground. He never clocked the raw and exceptional talent that was on offer from my magic feet, knees and head.

I should have waited on Bob Kelly.

Man City have decided to replace Pellegrini. Everyone knows. Pep is coming in. I think that has more humanity about it than the silence that reigns in the the corridors of Kerrydale Street.

The mandarins at the club are paid enough and have the authority and stature to deal with external upstarts in addition to their duty to make AND MANAGE difficult decisions….in fact that should be one of their key roles. If it was easy then anyone could do it.

Celtic’s station in life?…..we have no station …we have a launch pad where anything is possible.

So as I said, not sure what I am responding to but you’ve probably got me one way or another. :)

I hope you are right re formal relations and your examples do give weight.

My point which I so poorly communicated was that irrespective of the formality with the media, Ronny has been apparently abandoned. The scavenging that ranges from the BBC, to STV, Sky, BT and a host of ‘professional print commentators’ .

Perhaps it is because Celtic know that he is here for the foreseeable future….one in the eye for the vultures eh! But surely an announcement to the support would be better.

I am not comfortable with Ronny, but that is a personal view as everyone’s is based on the games I have been to and the disappointment I have felt in my perception of lack of progress.

If the club have decided however that his position is secure and that his approach meets the desired strategy, then in these days of the ‘buisnessification’ of our club and football in general then I think it might be a good tactic to let that be known.
