Neil Lennon should plan to remain in the game

438

I was disappointed to hear Neil Lennon was ‘mutually consented’ by Bolton yesterday. He picked the club up off the floor early last season, putting together a remarkable run of form which saw them talked as promotion candidates, but a reply cup defeat to Liverpool saw momentum dip. The year since has seen Bolton look like the relegation fodder they were before Neil’s arrival.

Forget all this nonsense the newspapers are throwing around this morning (anything to undermine the team ahead of Kilmarnock on Saturday), Neil’s ship has sailed in Glasgow, but he should plan to remain in the game.

The people of Bolton might not have seen him at his best, but he’s a genuine managerial talent. After a shaky 18 months at Celtic he turned a corner and became a remarkable success, crafting a team who could compete with anyone in the world.

Looking back now, I think the intensity of the Celtic job got too much for Neil. It’s a 24x7x365 life, you need vast oceans of patience, and need to be prepared to make enormous sacrifices. It’s not just about structuring a defence to subjugate wee Leo and his pals.

The Bolton job was always going to be a tall order. He picked them up in a relegation spot, there was no money to improve things, while each passing month the financial position deteriorated. He also had to find an unusual pre-match technique to address the ‘I know you’re not getting paid but how about giving 110% anyway?’ problem.

The same media who are trying to disrupt our title challenge have misread the mood music this time. If anything, they’ve focussed the support on the task in hand.

On another matter………….. I’m one of the many who have signed up to Zip Slide across Celtic Park on Easter Saturday morning in aid of the Celtic Foundation. This is a great initiative; all those who have signed up have paid event costs, so money raised goes straight to the Foundation’s mission to improve Health, promote Equality, encourage Learning and tackle Poverty.

The work the Foundation do in our name is incredible.  If you can contribute, please do so here.

Thank you.

So, we should “…forget all this nonsense the newspapers are throwing around this morning…”? I agree with that.

Should we also forget all the nonsense about Celtic’s abject lack of action on Res 12? What is the Board’s reasoning on this, and their IMMEDIATE plans to ensure that the SFA is brought to justice? Should we shut up about that?

I know, let’s talk about Lenny – that’s always a good topic to use to deflect attention – “Look! Somebody’s being bad to wee ex-manager squirrel – those nasty papers” – that’s today’s CQN non-story.

Rubbish – and still the clock ticks down. Not long to go PL – you’ll be in the clear soon.

We of course all differ in our views on society.

I find Scotland, having been born here….Backward.

I referred to that COS document because it is a recurrent theme in modern Scotland.

Some would have us believe that things are different now, i think Neil Lennon would disagree.

I seem to recall as a lad being denied an identity, by people who refused to see me as Scottish or Irish.

That still goes on….That is the heart and soul of Scotland….in my eyes.

  15. MATTSTEWART@3:29 – Probably the dip in performance which reflects badly on Ronny, is down to the loss of Virgil and Jason, an exquisite mixture of Roman poetry and Greek mythology – however if the ‘Golden Fleece’ (league title) is secured, perhaps Ronny will become a long-time “Homer’ and write his own Celtic Iliad

Steve Procter has had a bit of a bad time of it recently, he was wrongly accused of something very serious and ended up with his name in the papers.

He was described as the originator of acid house in the uk in an article I read about it, stretching things a bit but then he always was good at that sort of thing :). I was thinking about him the other day when I was going through my record collection and found some of the old rate groove reissues he did with urban records (I think it was). I went to a few of his clubs over the years

  18. My friends in Celtic,

Why have we got ourselves into a tissy about speculation about our next manager. The MSM are only echoing what has been repeated often enough on here.

I saw the interviews. Is this not what many on here would like to witness.

They are getting to hear first hand from the managers they advocate.

It doesn’t bother me in the slightest, because there is no vacancy.

Back the team, back Ronny. Then there would be no need for any interviews.

I’m afraid we, the Celtic supporters are reaping what we have sowed.

Sometimes we endow those with the greatest invective, ‘action this day’ opinions and madame guillotine solutions, with having a monopoly on enthusiasm and passion. Like the crowd baying for a goal as we surge forward on a tide of optimism and hope to grab that winner….only to find out that we’ve got ten forwards and no defence.

    So back to the question

Can we get Celtic fans and the Internet to show some respect to Ronny?

As old Ghandi would have said, first of all we can show it ourselves…and then I think that far more is achievable, especially if we equally inject our stance and what it is trying to achieve with passion.

We might not win over most of those who disagree, we might not win any over. But if we are arguing with respect about respect, then at least we can expect a hearing…and who knows where that will lead.

I’ve thought long and hard about where we should be going as a club, and what being a club means. I’ve thought even more about what we should BELIEVE is possible. My conclusion may seem incredible, but I believe that we could and perhaps should be the most, and demonstrably TO OTHERS the most, iconic football and sporting beacon in the world.

I believe that is possible as I believe that no other sporting organisation has the ingredients to make that happen. I also believe that I have concocted at least one recipe that could make paint a picture of an amazing future….. I’ve never said anything about these mental meanderings, simply because I’ve always doubted whether it was worth it?

    Now I believe it is.

But I’ll tell you this, unless we can bring together an agreement on where we are going, not today or tomorrow, but in ten or twenty years time, unless we inspire the youngsters today to be the bedrock of the future, unless we make real the myth of the past and establish a real connection between board, team and the worldwide diaspora, then it won’t be worth it.

We need buy in….and the the first step is to show what it is we are all buying in to.

A dreamer….aye probably….but I’m sick of how people that I respect from all walks of life disagree to the point of deafness because they don’t want to hear what each other is saying.

There is some great stuff in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird” but two that abide with me are….

“People generally see what they look for, and hear what they listen for.”

    and

“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.”

The first one puts a straitjacket on what is possible, and the second loosens the ties.

Sorry I was going to give you a simple answer and a floodgate opened.

I’ll put my thoughts together in a more coherent fashion as soon as time allows.

    Can’t hurt! Can It?

    Good post.

    Love your way with words.

Can i suggest a simple solution to the social decline of Celtic….Principle.

The reason supporters are not currently buying into the Celtic ethos, is a consequence of the distrust of DD, PL, and the rest of the board.

Im sure you would agree, that respect is something that needs to be earned.

I dont see any evidence of that, quite the reverse actually.

There is a wide split between the board and the supporters, and it is because the board have divorced themselves from the support.

They seem to represent themselves rather well, but they no longer represent the views of the supporters.

    In my opinion of course.
